I believe I have four different manual can openers with no electric ones. I like saving counter space for other critical appliances (e.g. blender to make drinks, crockpot to make chili).

Brituchenite, I'm in your homeland at present.

I've seen that. A few years ago I had finished up on a weekend meeting about an hour and a half early in Reston and someone local walked by and said "What are you still doing here?" I said, "catching up on e-mail before I go home." He then said "Have you seen the forecast?" I said "The way you said that I'm guessing you mean snow?" He said "Yes, in about 2 hours." I was packed up and in my car in under 3 minutes heading out of town. DC area is the last place I want to be with the threat of snow.

In fact, today I am HOPPING MAD because we are STILL waiting for my town to issue the excavation permits. It has been one month since we put the application in. ONE FREAKING MONTH! Can you tell I'm steamed???? I want to go down to the boro hall and raise holy he!!, but it wouldn't do any good. They'd just keep me waiting longer out of spite.:mad::mad::mad::mad:

Too bad you don't live in that surrounding town. I could have made a phone call to speed things up.

I think IAH with snow accumulation might be a bit worse ;) I can affirm that if there's accumulation on roads, my town should simply shut down due to the elevation changes. Don't want to recreate the videos posted last night.

True.

Hope you are having a good time! Don't forget to buy yourself some yummy Cadbury Flakes! Mmmmm! And, if you like traditional English Christmas pudding, pop into Harrods and pick up one of their Luxury Christmas Puds. They are TO DIE FOR! Sooooooo delicious. Alas, I have none left, so I shall be a poor scavenger this year.

The problem is, the building inspector only comes in twice a week - Tues and Thurs from 5:30pm-7:30pm. He's contracted. So, he goes out to do inspections and only "gets round" to doing permits when he has a "chance".:mad::mad::mad::mad: I believe he also works for that surrounding town.

I am so mad, I could spit. And these damn permits are not cheap. I think we had to pay about $6000 for them.

I've heard that D.C. residents are terrible about commuting in or coping with snow. Guess it's in one of those transitional zones that doesn't get a big dump of white stuff too often, and has lots of clueless (as to winter driving) Southerners mixed into the population.

Now, those of us in Houston aren't really entitled to throw stones. This place can look like beyond Thunderdome when white death begins falling from the sky. It doesn't happen often enough, though, so we have to make do with local news footage of the idiots in Dallas trying to drive during their (nearly) annual ice-storm.

2 electric and at least 2 manual. *ALWAYS* ensure you have a bottle opener and corkscrew in case of emergency situation!

:rolleyes::D
I was in an ice storm in Dallas when we were hit by another idiot driver that had no clue how to drive in ice and was there another time when the city was polarized for two days. I was at the Anatole and room service wait was over 2 hours. The bar, however, was happily serving anyone who was there and the spa was still open. Not a bad way to spend a couple of days.

Time to do my annual perf:rolleyes:rmance review.

I'm not sure if there is a proper way to drive on ice in a city like DFW that lacks adequate supplies of grit/road salt. Seems like every year there's news footage of some poor schmuck skidding sideways through a 1080 as they hit a patch of black ice on I-20.

Agreed, though there are a number of alternatives for both scenarios. I'm pretty good at using a binder clip to get a beer bottle open and I've punched in my share of corks. On the cork front it is way easier with the real ones versus the plastic ones.

1. Place protruding rim of bottle-cap over edge of someone else's straight counter-top.
2. Hold bottle firmly with non-dominant hand.
3. Smash downwards onto bottle-cap with flat underside of fist on dominant hand.
4. Enjoy beer.
