It sounds like the daughter wants a brand new BMW or something. It's not like the kid is ever going to wash it so being perfect shouldn't be an issue. Back in my days we felt lucky to even be allowed to get the keys to drive the station wagon much less get a nice new car.
We went out to run errands and along the way were both talking about how obnoxious this whole situation sounds. And it's not like Mom and Dad were driving anything fancy. Mom is a flight attendant for DL and they met us driving a black mid-level trim Mazda 3 that was in need of a wash and had a few door dings itself. We've already knocked $1,500 off the price of the car. We were willing to sell it to these people for about $500 off the KBB value for this car in fair condition, and the car would certainly appraise as being in good condition, because there are no mechanical problems and the paint and interior are in great shape. The price we were willing to sell at is about $1800 off the KBB value for the car in good condition. Hopefully they'll come look at it tomorrow, like they promised, and still buy it. The crazy thing is they went to their bank to arrange financing and gave their bank the VIN on this car, before they ever looked at it. Their bank even has a faxed copy of the title, and has issued a check to them payable to my partner's bank. So if they decide to back out of this deal, they're going to have to deal with canceling the loan at their bank, since it has not only been approved, but the bank has already issued a certified check for the transaction. |

My best friend started getting brand new cars at age 14 (lived in the "country" so had a farm permit as to not inconvenience anyone from driving her in to town for school. Except that her parents weren't farmers, but anyway) and wrecked 2 (someone else wrecked one but she was stupid enough to let him drive it drunk). She, in turn, bought her daughter a brand new car for her 16th birthday. Trust me, if there had been a dent or scratch or anything imperfect, there would have been whining, tears and moaning.
I chose the college, as did my sisters. Not that there was really much choice in that matter. At 18, a month before going off to college, I bought my first car for around $3,500. It was a good reliable thing that had fairly low mileage, manual locks and windows, and no tape deck. But, it got me where I needed to go for almost seven years, and had payments I could afford ($150/month) while I was a student. It was funny how when I got to college the car wasn't such a big deal, despite the fact I was at a fairly expensive private institution with pretty selective admissions policies. In rural Southeast Texas the nice brand new car in high school was a given, and was happening in a lot of households that didn't have incomes that could easily support that habit. I end up in college with a lot of kids who were from much wealthier families than I was and many of them were driving Mom's old station wagon, or they had a car equal to mine, or none at all. |

I used to do around 125+ nights a year (almost all Marriott) before marrying Plus1. I would have an extra night of hotel every trip because of the flight schedule. IAH is a bit easier. I've already hit my 75 nights with MR and will get my SPG with the double stays. If I had stuff going on next door, I didn't notice because I had ear plugs in :p

The last sentence is key. Many people raise their children with a sense of entitlement, particularly at higher income levels.

I'm picking up AA pilots communication with ATC
This is so strange. I am listening to FM 105.9 which is out of NYC and I'm picking up transmissions from AA (Geez, don't they know I want CO traffic)
and I guess EWR. This has never happened before. Any of you techno guys know why? |
