I think you need a passport with 6 months left after the scheduled end of the trip, not from the time you apply for a visa.

Btw, you can take the train to blue mountain if you just want to go to scenic world. The train is actually quite convenient. I heard bus tours can be a bit rushed and you arrive with the other 100000 tourists. We booked a rental car and drove up there ourselves and really enjoyed spending as much time as we wanted. We actually stopped at Featherdale Animal Park longer than blue mountain. Who could resist hugging a Koala and feeding kangaroos and wallabies all day long?!

That's standard, yes.

Plenty of time! I usually remember it the week before I go.

Yes, that's a problem. They won't let you (or I should say don't have to let you in) in if you don't have 6 months left on your passport so I sugggest getting a new passport, then the VISA (and get the VISA as late as possible so it will last you until your next trip). I would not risk it because China has been a bit hard on passports/visas.

How were the organized tours? Would you have preferred doing it on your own with a car so you had more freedom to explore?

The driving on the other side of the road is no problem for me as I have done it several times before.

I've always loved the organized tours and I am not a tour person by any means.

Im not usually a fan of organized tours, but for those places you are interested in seeing, they are much better. Places like the Northern Beaches in SYD are better with your own car, but it will be winter so that does not apply.

The guy I'm going to meet for lunch now.

Thank you all for the Sydney tour input!

I keep going back and forth on this, but I think I've made up my mind. I am going to book an organized tour for Hunter Valley and then speak to the concierge for recommendations on Blue Mountain (car vs. tour).

Are you going to China proper? You don't need one for HKG.

Tempting. I need to find some decent trips to cash in on first. ;)

I need my passport for Zurich in late Sept. I guess if I renew now, I should get it back in time for that. I think I will get on that.

I am going to ask for a 24 month multi entry visa for China since it is the same price and I will be back in April 2010 and Jan 2011.
