To sleep? Eat? Visit The Great Platte River Road Archway Monument?
The public transportation there is so good, I wouldn't (and haven't). Are there specific day trips you want to take? |

@sdm1130 - What day trips are you looking to do ?
I have done the Blue Mountains/Katoomba and some wine thing near SYD, but both of those were via organized tours I purchased at the tourist office in The Rocks. |

Has anyone rented a car in SYD? I'm thinking of renting something to use for transportation to/from the airport and for a day trip or two outside of SYD. While in the city (just 3 nights), I'd keep the car parked (probably expensive, I know) instead of trying to use it to get around. It seems like it will probably be a wash when compared to a car service in to the city and renting a car for a day or 2 from a location in the city. Just thought I'd ask for some Box input before heading over the Australia forum...

I was thinking of a day in the Blue Mountains and a day at a few wineries. There are day tours to each from SYD but I thought it might be nicer to do both on our own.

I agree with rkkwan on the stuff about petrol and parking... I've rented with Hertz down there several times, out of BNE, SYD, MEL, and PER, and it's all very straight-forward. Fortunately I know how to drive on both sides of the road, it's a skill I can practice quite regularly in West Texas. ;)

The Blue Mountain Tour I did was pretty cool, It started in SYD, we drove out of the city and stopped at a wildlife park with Koalas, Roos,Dingos and all sorts of crazy things. Then we drove to Katoomba and had lunch there, and then to the Blue Mountain National Park. There was time to walk around and hike a few short trails. The return trip was to the Olympic village, where you boaded a river catamaran that took about an hour and dropped you off at Circular Quay, so you got a great view of the city from the water.

This is true. One of the great features of the new Diamond tier is, if "Direct Ticketing Charge Waivers" is what I think and hope that it is, we can make all our bookings over the phone with no charge. That means that we will never need to use delta.com again (unless they have a web booking bonus going) except maybe to change seats.

How were the organized tours? Would you have preferred doing it on your own with a car so you had more freedom to explore?

I thought I saw a 763 int'l on an ATL-SFO afternoon flight on the schedule the Saturday of Labor Day weekend. Don't know whether that's an anomaly.
