That's the same thing the s/o said to me. There was lots of laughter at the possibility of my precious points and miles being “taken away”

I had to ask a guy to switch so we could sit together, I felt bad doing it but he said he didn't mind.

^ to the upgrade.

^ to the FA

I always feel bad about asking someone to switch also.

HOORAY! Y'all deserve it! Now do this - the next time you are flying solo and see two people that might be together - offer to move. Trust me, good karma!

I am all in favor of good karma yet I despise the entitlement attitude that some exhibit in this situation.

Yup. I almost always do and on the few occasions I've asked folks if they minded moving they've never turned me down. Of course, I've always offered "equal or better" seating, which doesn't hurt.

+1. Though I can only recall actually having the guts to ask someone to switch once (aisle for aisle) and she said no. I very, very rarely travel non-solo these days (unless it's in a group of 20+), however.

I remember there being a whole thread about this issue (what are the boundaries of acceptability in asking for a seat switch, etc.) in some FT forum a few months ago and, IIRC, it got pretty ugly...

Hopefully the order doesn't get axed like my 8K order from yesterday! As long as they don't touch my other orders, I'll still be happy.

I can imagine you would! When I am traveling alone, I am always happy to switch so folks can sit together.

Yes, there's been a thread and if it's equal or better as above, it shouldn't be an issue. I really think it's the manner you ask it in rather than assuming. At LAX, they are WONDERFUL in being proactive about trying to get seats together if you aren't already (meaning the P Club). I'd be thrilled if someone DIDN'T want to switch with me when I'm traveling with BL JR because THEY would have to deal with her ;)

I think a lot of this comes down to your opinion on "equal or better." In a single-aisle plane, there isn't too much to debate (closer to the front is better, right?), but there is always the window/aisle debate. And on larger AC, there is more to debate, IMO.

The other main considerations are that some people feel very strongly about bulkhead or not and about last row of a cabin (limited recline).

Other than that, I agree that they are pretty much all the same.

One entertaining story I forgot to tell about my "fun" getting home yesterday. When I switched over to the COEx flight I got seat 3C, bulkhead window. Not too bad. As I got on the guy in front of me rearranged a couple bags to get his into the overhead that covers rows 3 & 4. Everything else was full. I wander back and finally find overhead space available at row 11. Strangely enough, the guy is sitting in row 10. There was plenty of space in the back and he didn't care; he just put his bag up front.

I was already pretty much on fire from dealing with DL being annoying earlier so I didn't really hold back too much when suggesting that his bag move back to where he was sitting so mine could be where I was sitting. That was fun.

What were the dates for the DC thing?

True, some people think bulkhead is better, some people think it's worse. IMHO, it also has a lot to do with the delivery and attitude. Of course, I was thinking up front which is a bit easier to switch on.

Such as? One restaurant GM I know claims to be able to know what all of his tables are thinking about their experience by reading their face and body language.

I love that! Not as good as when Plus1 pocket dials me and I find out what really goes on in his day ;) and certainly not as good as when his sister pocket dials me!:o

Reminds me of my mother's NCL sales rep whom we know very well. She butt-dialed me once while I was standing in the same office as her, and when I said that she butt-dialed me, her response was "Michael, at least take me to dinner first." :D Pretty sweet answer for an extremely religious, married, newly minted grandma.

My fiancee thinks the same thing, but now that she got her HHonors AmEx she is considering it herself. I told her I would even do the transportation for her in the name of more points for us. No counterproposal to that as of yet.

And since when are those government weight charts anywhere close to an approximation of reality? I know for me, in order to be in the safe zone I would have had to be ~15 pounds lighter than the weight at which I exited Basic Training. Both my mother and my father failed to recognize me when I walked past them for the first time on graduation weekend, and my mother basically told me that I looked emaciated then. I thought so too; my cheeks were caved in. I'm afraid of the government's normal.

Yes, but people have differing opinions of what an "equal" seat is. On CO domestic flights, for example, I consider a bulkhead aisle first class seat to be better than a non-bulkhead aisle first class seat. Other people would consider the non-bulkhead aisle seat to be equal to the bulkhead aisle seat. Many others would consider the non-bulkhead seat to be better than a bulkhead seat. Thus, there is more than a little subjectivety involved in the "equal" or "better than" analysis.
