IMO, the logic of the design is nearly impossible to argue with. Gate-side screening, the train station, the shopping, etc. makes it one of the few airports that I am looking forward to go back to solely for the experience of transit.
IMO, the layout makes little sense as it requires a LONG walk for Shengen to non-Schengen transits - especially when transiting piers is required. |

Did they deploy their own ground-ops folks? I'd imagine they would just contract someone locally to handle all of it.
Assuming they are contracting group ops, I'd be curious to know what their contacts allow for in significant service reductions.

Really, if they don't get any solid bookings for the Northern Hemisphere winter by Nov, i wouldn't be surprised if they are pulling it by Jan/Feb.

Shopping aside, how is that any different than several other EU airports?

My experience with airports in Europe is limited to the old craphole at ATH, LHR, FRA in the middle of the night, ORY (which I don't remember a thing about), and SNN. AMS kicks the crap out of all of those, and I used it as O&D/my local train station. Hence my low threshold for being impressed.
My point was just that train stations and gate-side screening are somewhat the norm in a lot of major EU airports. The train station and (from what I've heard) shopping at AMS certainly make it ^ but the layout is still  to me. Either way, the opportunities to connect in AMS are almost gone, so on we go to FRA... |

I certainly don't have any extensive EU airport experience either. :)

Either way, the opportunities to connect in AMS are almost gone, so on we go to FRA... There's also MUC/VIE/ZRH for EU connections, and in the next few years BRU and the new/improved ATH, not to mention all of the SAS hubs. Unrelated: I need someone who is a lot better with numbers than me...my exam next week is 130 questions. Passing score for normal people is 157, but I have to pass 5% over minimum...lowest whole number would be 165. No penalty for wrong answers. There's got to be a way to solve for how many correct answers put me in the neighborhood of a passing score. Anyone? Bueller? Any help appreciated. |

I think the producers and casting directors are living in some dream world. They always go for the load d bags to host shows and what are the shows that do well? The ones with the funny, geeky, normal people. Example, Myth Busters.

Is it more perturbing that I'm watching HGTV or that Keyshawn is apparently a licensed interior designer?
For the record, HGTV is great. My favorite takeaway from HGTV is Vern Yip. I don't like what he does professionally, but he has the greatest name to play with. "What's wrong with you?" "The doctor called. It's bad news." "Yeah. I've got a case of Vern Yip." Secondly, their big "HGTV Dream Home Giveaway" is a big ol' sham. They build this moster house in some super-rich neighborhood, they put on a 2 hour special showing all the stuff they put into it (of course mentioning all the brands by name for promotional purposes), then the person who "wins" the contest can't afford to live there. Everyone who has EVER won the house has had to sell it almost immediately. The one family that relocated and tried to stay couldn't afford the taxes, drove themselves to poverty, and had to sell the house for pennies on the dollar just to get rid of it. Not to mention that anyone who COULD afford to move into a multi-million dollar house in the middle of a ritzy neighborhood wouldn't be entering HGTV contests on the web anyway. I put HGTV's Dream Home Giveaway right up there with Oprah's "Everyone gets a car" thing....the only difference is that HGTV does it every year. |

Honestly, I think before they pull the route they'll reduce it's frequency.
They've already gone from daily to 6x a week. I wouldn't be surprised if they go down to 2-3x a week to see if it gets any better. But, it does raise the question if one should buy a ticket, for say, January and hope they drop the flights so you have to be reaccomodated on UA or QF.

Now that they have that new agreement with them, anything is possible.

I like that there is a train right in the building, but most Euro airports do that. Otherwise it is somewhat meh to me.

Am I the only one that doesn't like the design/layout of AMS? It was early in the morning and I didn't get much sleep the night before, but I didn't like the place at all.
The airport I wish I would have had more time in was BRU, especially the Schengen side. Wide open terminal area with all of the shops located in one area works very well. FRA T2 excels at this as well. |

Yeah...It was easily a 20 minute walk (plus 10 minute wait for emigration) for my connection between TRD and EWR. Part of that is because we went to the lounge which was another pier past the EWR flight's gate, but it was still a hike. The airport also looks a little tired and dirty inside to me. I do like that they have a ton of seating spread out, some of which is recliner chairs for sleeping.

AMS is laid out very poorly. The signage is good but having to walk around that much while avoiding the different stores and sitting areas is a real pain.

FRA T2 excels at this as well. FRA T2 is nice as well. Although, I did feel like an animal with the cage they have over head. :p One of the EU airport I'd most like to see is CPH. The pictures I have seen show some very nice architecture. |

Very nice here, high 70s. Of course, I'm on my laptop while at the Firestone Complete Auto Care Center. |
