#41 is my favorite. Try as I might, I can't get a ball to freeze on the end of the bat.

Some of my pro motorsports photog buddies said it is simple - press and hold, allowing the camera to frame the action. "Trying to time the shot is a waste of time and energy given the cheap memory available today."

Too bad it is so darn hard to get EK reward tickets. JFK is tough enough, but YYZ and IAH seem to be impossible in my experience.

JFK definitely is doable.

Did you rent the 500mm?

Nope. It is an f/8 500mm manual focus lens that I bought on eBay back in 2003ish for $100. A phenomenal bargain. I basically focused on the location, braced myself (hard with a lens that long and no tripod but I did OK) and kept pushing the button. Eventually I got the timing right and was able to start getting the ball in the frame. There are a couple hundred that I missed on, but storage is cheap. :D

There's two sides to that coin. I'll still try and time a shot if I want the object framed a certain way. If I'm shooting F1, and I want a car at a certain point on the track or in a corner, I'm still going to try and create that shot. I do have a shot of a Phillies pitcher with a perfect arm blur and a nice long blurred ball, and it was 50/50 timing and luck. My crossed solos Blue Angels shot was luck and timing, and I certainly tried to get that shot both days of the show. Both of those shots linked were shot handheld at 300mm.

I wonder if EK is going to downgauge JFK from the 380 + 77W to two 77W's, at least temporarily.

After I get the 40D, I at some point want to buy the one piece of equipment that will solve my storage problems for life, and probably after that: I want me a Drobo.

Sadly, my Pentax *istDS only has ~2.5 frames/second on its burst mode. That is way too slow to get enough shots in a burst, though I did try that route. Eventually timing it started to work out for me. Each player has a slightly different pace in their swing so it took a bit of trial and error, but I got there eventually.

If anyone else out there has a Pentax mount (hahaha...I know) and wants to try the long lens, I'm happy to share it. I rarely have found a good use for the lens - it is generally too long for what I'm usually taking photos of - but I was pretty sure this weekend was going to be a good use of it. I was actually worried at one point that our seats were too close such that I wouldn't be able to use it. Getting a shot like this one framed in was tough. I didn't crop that one at all.

Farts and photography - the Box is really up my alley today. :p

And my lowly little non-elite Rebel XT is at 3fps...that's why I want 40D so bad. I'm not concerned with more MP's so much as I am burst rate given how much I like to freeze motion when I shoot...hockey, airshows, baseball, etc. 6.5 fps might not get me motion blur given the fast shutter, but it will place a framed object just about exactly where I want it.

I have to bring my dog to the vet for surgery today :(. She has a hematoma in her ear that has been getting larger since I first brought her to the vet 2 weeks ago. So the vet said surgery is the only option left now. I called work and asked if anyone can switch with me, but no one is willing to work my midnight shift. We will see how many switches I do now when these people want me to work their evening shifts and work a evening/night double so they can attend their child’s football, baseball, soccer games and after school plays.

Why is it every time you get a little ahead with money and save it, somthing comes up that makes it all go away.

Hey Mackieman - how did you split the quote like that one above? Sorry to be not technical about these things, but I'm learning ....!!

ConciergeMike Mar 16, 2009 10:18 am

Brit, it's the button next to Quote. Select Multi-Quote from all the posts you want, and then hit Quote on the last post. All of the posts you selected show up....if it's multiple posts. If it's the same post, just copy the code surrounding the quote.

Well they may be taking delivery of another 380 or, given that the YYZ flight is not daily, will rotate one of the current ones between YYZ and JFK.
