It will still be my longest ever flight in Y. So far I've not flown anything longer than IAH-SEA in the back — and most of the time I've been up front on that one.

My new Rebel XSi arrives tomorrow! Hopefully I can get comfortable with it before CDG/BRU so I don't end up with a bunch of ruined pictures.

I'm sure you can get the hang of it within a week. I'll have my Canon AE-1 with me on the trip so I'll hopefully grab some good film shots.

I haven't shot with a SLR since high school, so I will need to get used to all the settings again. Worse case, I can drop it in to full auto mode. :o

Thanks! Being that I'm new to the DSLR world, I'm starting off pretty basic. I'll have the 18-55 IS kit lens and a 55-250 IS as well.

Those lenses have pretty good image quality and the IS very effective.

First thing you need to think about is whether to shoot RAW or JPEG. Also keep in mind that those "auto/picture" modes on Canon dSLRs don't record in RAW.

Any thoughts on the topic?

Since I don't normally do a ton of editing, I was leaning towards just going with JPEG. I suppose I could always start with RAW+JPEG and see if the RAW files ever come in handy.

I first learned on a film SLR in a high school course too. I haven't gotten to the point where I mess with every setting yet, but I learned to blur subjects the old-fashioned way...with follow-thru after the subject passed in front of you, etc.

Shooting in full auto lasts about a day if you are a former SLR user. Full auto has it's place though but that comes with experimenting and is different with each camera model. Have fun shooting.

On the RAW JPEG front. I've learned when to use which. When in doubt I shoot with both. Indoor with CF lighting and sunset, RAW. Most daytime and defininetly night, JPEG.

RAW+JPEG eats up a ton of card space. I probably should get around to playing with RAW...it would help tremendously with indoor shots that have poor lighting...hockey games come to mind.
