How do NJ police tell if your reg is expired?

They tried the sticker thing and that failed miserably. NJ cops just ask for the documentation, decide to write another ticket, and ask you to step out of the car please sir should they discover a bad reggie. I am ashamed to admit that while the sticker thing was going on in NJ, I got nailed for my registration because I didn't renew, therefore not getting my new sticker in the mail.

On a side note, what is it with NJ and stickers? Wasn't there something recently about putting stickers on the bumpers of cars that belong to drivers under 21?

My database entry says "Don't pull this guy over." I have those special plates that the state senator's offices sign off on people having. For the NJ residents out there, if you've ever seen those plates that have a 1 followed by three letters, that's the ones. I decided to go all out when I got mine: those plates are letter-coded by county. Ocean County is F. (Shocker.) My plate would have been FMH1 or 1FMH. Naaaah. My senator's office called the other senator who was the guy responsible for "M" plates, and I got my three correct initials on my plate with a 1. Is it arrogant? Yeah, maybe. But I shudder to think of all the poor schmucks who don't have their real initials on those plates.

Grrr. Something happened to my firefox where the FT CSS isn't being read properly and FT looks all weird. Same thing with facebook.

This Lounge thread is definitely quite different.

Where is all the shiny new stuff? Why is everything falling apart?...

...and what is that awful smell?!? That is worse than that smell where the New Jersey Turnpike splits further north near the Holland Tunnel exit!

You're assuming that this is a Lounge thread. It's really not, as here in CO-land we have a P-Club meet-up thread. This is Jerry Seinfeld in his Internet incarnate: a thread about nothing. And we that live here are perversely proud of same. :D

Yeah, but we don't get EQPs (Elite Qualifying Posts) over there.

Ahh, I was suggesting that if you could pay the agency before the notice goes out, you should be ok.

In theory, even if you pay them directly after National sends you a notice, National can't charge you. At least that is how it worked out with my parking ticket and Avis.

Yeah, the problem is knowing how much to pay, who to pay it to (that part is easy to figure out) and most importantly, getting it matched to my rental car without any sort of notice from the NTTA.

It's a lot of hassle that could easily be avoided if they'd just come up with a better solution, like Plate Pass, or something else similar.

I should have been more specific. I was trying to state the fact that TX has their reg stickers on their windshields, like NJ. Not anything more than that. It is tough typing, while trying to hold a 4 week old.

Gotcha. I was thinking you were saying us Texans weren't capable of getting it on the license plate. :p

I actually prefer it inside the car myself, having been a victim of my license plate sticker being stolen twice in the same year during the last year of the old system. It also makes it easier to see on a regular basis, as a reminder to when it's due to be replaced.

FareCompare Y-UP search now displays WN Fares.

Yes, in addition to a corrupt just about everything here, we have to get our cars put up on a rack for the State to poke and prod every other year. At least when I bought my car, I just got in after the law change that gave new cars a four-year window. This state sucks on many levels.

Those inspections are pretty standard in most states. Don't complain about it being every other year. In much of the country it's every year.

I've never really minded that. If it helps keep some of the clunkers off the road that are unsafe not only for their occupants, but the rest of us as well, so be it.

Agreed. It's also nice to have it done for free at a state facility. In PA, it had to be done by a certified mechanic every year. I forget how much it cost, but it was not cheap.

I'll concede the point about once a year, but the NJ inspections that we know and hate are the furthest thing from free that there is out there. A large part of the debt and over-taxation that we deal with in NJ is thanks to our lovely way of doing business, with pay-to-play and no-bid contracting. Friends of the powerful get sweetheart contracts, while the proletariat asks for more lube.
