I always suggest that I'm thinking about cancelling but I come out and ask about retention offers. I think no matter which way you do it they will always try to start by mentioning the benefits of the card pursuant to some script after which they will say "now aren't those great benefits." You have to push back once or twice to get to the real retention offers at least in my experience, even if you try to start right at "retention."

Amex platinum
Amex platinum. Got a retention offer last year (I think $300 with some spend). Charge just hit my card. Chatted with rep. Offered $150. Do you guys think it’s worth trying again? If so, when do I try again? Was hoping for more.

As a matter of practice, American Express (USA) will not extend two retention offers for the same card in the same 12 month period. When did the $300 post to your account in 2020?

Oh, that's interesting. I have one of those coming up for the first annual fee in November. The only way I'll keep it is if I get an offer like this.

Surpass Card, open since 2017. Usually about $40k annual spend, went to $0 in April after we switched to Chase Sapphire Reserve. Annual fee just hit this statement - Initiated chat, after a bunch of back and forth about benefits was offered 20,000 HH points with no spend requirement or agreement to keep account open for any period of time.

Personal platinum. Upgraded from gold a few months ago. Received retention on gold card two years ago but was denied a retention offer last year on the ground that I had received one the year before. Had about $15k spend/year when it was a gold but have not kept up that pace since upgrading to platinum. Offered 60,000 points for $4k spend. Accepted. I argued that the elimination of paypal $30 per month was very significant to me. Done through the chat feature.

I was just offered $150 with a $3500 spend in 90 days. I only got the card last March 2020....renewed in April. ( I actually could make that spend with a outstanding bill I have...but the offer seems a bit weak)

Amex Schwab Platinum: Called today (annual fee due in September) and ended up with three offers: 40,000 points, or $150 of statement credit, or $400 of statement credit after $3K in spending in the next 90 days. Took the $150 statement credit.
Me: $10K in Platinum spend in the past year (almost all on one purchase). "Amex Member" for almost 40 years. Haven't asked for a retention bonus since switching from Platinum to Schwab Platinum in 2018 to get the $200 annual membership fee subsidy. The recent fee increase without many useful benefits put me over the top. FWIW, I put most of my spend on the Chase "Trifecta" of cards (Sapphire Reserve, Freedom Unlimited, and Freedom) as my "Points Guy" strategy.

Just called Amex to cancel my two Amex Platinums (personal - one each for my wife and I). We were both offered a $650 credit for $4k spend in 90 days. I took the offer - the lady mentioned this is a new offer she hadn't seen before. We've both held the card since 2015 for context.

AF just posted at the legacy $550 amount. I was offered 20k MR through Chat, with no spend requirement. Accepted.
I have had this card for one year but prior to that I held a vanilla Platinum for 4 years before closing it last Spring. I have been a Member Since 2011 and still hold a variety of other cards (Gold, Delta Platinum, Marriott Bonvoy [$95 AF Legacy Card], and BBP). I put approximately $7k spend on the CS Platinum and approximately $50k spend on the remainder of my accounts.
I probably should have pressed to see if any of the other more lucrative offers were available but the no spend requirement was attractive enough to get a quick acceptance from me. Hoping that the points will post ahead of the CS redemption devaluation so that I can ferret them away into my brokerage account, although the 1.25 versus 1.1 only equates to a difference of $30 for the 20k MR, so not the end of the world.
Edit: Of note, the points did post on 8/28 so within 24 hours of accepting.
