Who is they and what did they say? You can get a retention offer whenever, if there is one in your account. I accepted one >30 days after the AF hit last year because I planned on keeping the card anyway. Either my Gold or Brilliant, don't remember without checking.

You only have 30 days after the AF hitting to get a full refund. That's Amex policy.

They is some previous posters up thread. I just posted that was not my experience with AX. It has been my experience with Chase and Citi.

I have the classic Platinum and added Schwab this year. Classic has been open for 5 years with $50k-70k annual spend.

Called in to close classic, to simplify things. No retention offer given (nor did I ask), but I didn't go through with the closure, still thinking about it.

Then did a chat, they offered 30k MR, or $400 with $3k spend in 3 months. Took the $. I figure I can get a good amount of value out of a second card still. After the AF goes up in '22 I may end up closing it.. let's see what retention offers look like.

I don't " chat" much but I thought I would try it to request retention offer for my Schwab Plat. which comes up for renewal next month.

I got horribly confused thinking he was offering me a $300 statement credit " in September"....as well as a $150 statement credit for August....for a total of $450 ( very pleased with this offer) ......but after some back and forth chatting.... I realized he was saying I " got a $300 credit in September" last year...so the best they could do is give me $150 in August this year. I declined.

I'll call next time as I found the chat process a bit cumbersome and confusing.

Surprised they offered anything. Requesting a second retention offer on the same card within 13 months typically results in a refusal. Try again in October or November.

Try again at another time or day. It's hard to predict their busy times.

Biz platinum 1st time

1st time renewal on biz platinum. 15k spend first year. After bonus, did mostly gas when was a 5x category through June 30th. Did use airline credit and dell already(triple dip time frame). First offer via chat was waive 595 annual fee. Accepted. Did recently get Schwab platinum and cashed out 600k points. Said didnt think overlapping benefits was worth it. A little nervous since obvious had already done dell/airline (united travel bank) for this 2nd year.

Called today to cancel my Schwab Platinum card that I've had since 2018, because I got the Morgan Stanley Platinum in February for the free authorized user and engagement reimbursement. Was offered 20,000 MR points with no spend requirement and accepted. Prior to the phone call, I calculated that I would get approximately $620 in value from a $550 annual fee. Will probably offer to pay for a family member's SiriusXM account through August, 2022, since I'm using the MS entertainment credit for my own SiriusXM/Audible account. Overall, I am pleased with the exchange.

Seems that AmEx retention offers have become much more standardized.

Is there general agreement that AmEx retention offers are usually not particularly generous until the AF posts and thus calling a month or 2 prior to AF posting is likely to be unproductive? If so, is that a recent change or long standing policy?

Understanding the 13 months between offers policy, does that apply to an offer which is NOT accepted or to an accepted offer for which the spend requirement is NOT met and thus no bonus posted? (Yes, I understand that’s pretty unlikely with this audience but you never know, --it happens. )

Any generalizations regarding retention bonuses for no-annual-fee cards?

Thank you.

I expected that to be reasonable, since such premature retention allows for the next year's retention as well. But recently a family member asked for such premature retention offer on his Green card, and received the larger one of those reported here. So that DP went contrary to my expectation that premature offers had to be stingy.

Adding to other previous DPs that if you enter your card # and then get "this number is not in service", that it seems to be a transient thing and HUCA may "fix" it (e.g. it feels like maybe it randomly transfers you to one of N different internal numbers, one of which is out of service). I called in today and was having difficulty hearing the agent (poor line quality or something), so I called back. On the 2nd call I got the "not in service" message, and called a 3rd time from a different phone and got through.

Bonvoy Brilliant, renewal next month, offered 20k w/no spend requirement or I think $100 statement credit with some spending requirement. Cancelled the card. My last retention offer was two renewals ago, so I was thinking if I took an offer this time I'd be eligible again for my 2022 renewal. I suppose it's possible if I'd waited until after this year's fee posted, that the offer might've been better, but was probably going to cancel anyway.

I called Amex yesterday for a retention offer on my Green and was offered $125 to keep it open another year. I accepted it but now regret accepting it, as I've really been trying to clean up how many cards I have open. I assume at this point I could cause some damage if I call in and ask to close anyway, right?
