The annual fee for my Platinum card just posted ($550). The card was converted from the gold card in 05/2020.
How do you ask for retention offer via chat?
Start the chat session, and directly ask "Is there a retention offer for my card?". Do I need to ask for a retention department first, or any chat rep would be able to help?

My $295 AF hit (13 months after getting card) for my Amex Gold Business. "Chatted" to cancel card, and got a membership "specialist" who went on a very long speal about what the card could offer, blah blah. First retention offer was 5,000 MR points if spending $3,000 in 92 days and another 5k points if adding an AU. Declined. 2nd offer was $50 statement credit and another $100 credit if spending $2,000 in 92 days. Declined that. Cancelled card.

Amex Gold - 30,000 MR with no spend requirement, accepted via call. Other offers were to use 25,000 points to pay the AF or $150 for $2000 spend in 3 months.

Marriott Bonvoy. Received 30,000 points last year. No offers, but would downgrade to $95 card available. I have a huge line of credit on this one, so I will either downgrade or keep it. Will turn the $300 spend on Marriott into a non expiring gift card if I keep it

If you downgrade after three months, you will get a prorated refund. You will pay an annual fee of about $184 ((450 x 0.25) + (95 X 0.75)), and get both of the big benefits ($300 credit and better cert). My SO did this last year and it was better than most retention offers.

Same exact situation, online chatted for Schwab Plat, had the choice of 55k MR or $550 credit. Took the MR offer. The chat took 25 min, which I noted to the CSR is really too long. Our spend was fairly light in 2021 on the card.

I upgraded 6 months ago to the Delta Reserve card , the annual fee of $550 just hit , from what I read it seems to be a major no-no to cancel a card within 12 months of accepting an upgrade, what about trying to get a retention offer , is that something amex would get upset about ?
