Whether something is categorized as a retention offer or as something else may matter more immediately to Amex than to the customer, but who knows.

Last retention offer: Sept. 20 (20k MR/no spend, which I took).
Just chatted with an Amex rep knowing we're 13+ months since the last retention offer.
I was transferred to a Membership consultant, we went over the current benefits. I got offered a $150 statement credit which I took.

Tried retention again. Plan on cancelling Amex Platinum next year, but held on for one more year as I was offered a $150 statement credit for no spend.

My Amex Plat renews in February and I have no intention of renewing at the new prices. $550 was worth it to me with the old benefits but the only benefit I can use now is the $200/airline (though thats just banking AA upgrades for when i eventually to start flying again) and the uber benefit though I honestly don't use ubereats and don't use uber anymore so not sure thats even a benefit for me. The ones introduced last year throughout the year were nice but theres nothing now that I could use.
I've never had a retention offer on any amex I have and have had the card for 4+ years now. Unless I can get a really good offer, I am likely going to end up downgrading to a Gold. Do I wait until close to the renewal in February to reach out to Amex or would I reach out now?

If you ask for a retention offer a month or two before the AF is due, and AmEx makes an acceptable offer -- then you can stretch the interval to the next year's retention to 13+ months.

Starting my 4th year on Amex Personal Plat. In 2019 was offered 50k for $5k in spend. In 2020 I missed my renewal by like 60 days - so ate the fee. Today my $550 annual fee hit and I was told, "You have had a phenomenal account history with us." Whatever that means, I'm sure they tell that to all the girls. I was offered 40K MR for $3k in 3 months via chat. Not great, but I plan on some international travel, so I took it.

Does spend on AU cards count towards meeting retention offer spend or does it need to all be on the primary cardholder’s account?
