Schwab AMEX Platinum: Card opened for a few years (3-5) and never asked for retention offer previously. Just asked and got 55k points after $4k spend in 3 months. No other offers available. Accepted offer.

Did you ask if a Gold AU card (no extra AF) would qualify you for that bonus?

b) 30k MR no spending involved

I'm thinking which of the two I should be taking... FWIW, I don't have major flight purchases to make anytime soon as I just bought a bunch of tickets.
I got choice of 40k MR or $400 statement credit on my Schwab card, for $3k spend. Took the points. Long time with Amex (26 years); for some reason they were talking like I had the platinum for all that time but only about 6 years on that card.

Some retention agents work from home, and may not have your whole dossier available. Also their home terminals are noisier. You can hear faint beeps when the robot provides instructions and such.

Many of the retention offers reported above seem very large, particularly compared to past years. 60,000 MR, 50,000 MR; basically another SUB. Certainly SUBs have increased during that time also, maybe just one aspect of never ending devaluations? Wondering how others view it.

If AmEx wants to incentivize card holding, why not ease up on “lifetime”? What’s the difference to AmEx between a 60,000 retention offer and 60,000 SUB? Thank you.

Control. They can extend targeted offers and retention offers to the customers they choose, rather than opening it up to the broad marketplace.

Excellent point. But now I'll be really disappointed if I don't get some generous retention offers (and of course I DESERVE generous offers because I'd never get a card just for the SUB ).

Offered 30k MR with no spend via chat with AMEX. Got disconnected which is probably for the better -- haven't decided 100% and leaning toward canceling as I'm looking to reduce my CC AF expenditures given the reduced travel. The biggest value for the Platinum is SkyClub access and my DL AMEX Plat just came due so I'm likely to just consolidate the two Plats into an DL Reserve so I get my lounge access, maintain my MQD waiver, and drop my AF down to just $550 total instead of $550 + $295 (soon to be $695 + $295).

Plus I'll take the 80k bonus offer and the 20k MQMs which will have me sitting pretty for PM next year if business travel remains limited

no, I didn’t ask that because I’m sure it does qualify.

Not in my experience, and I received >60k MR points during 2020 in no spend retention offers across 2 card accounts. I only mention the amount because it would be above the 1099 reporting threshold.

Personal Platinum 3 years, min spending, 1st time via chat asking about retention offer. Renewal is July 26.

1st offer: 55k pts/$4k spending/3 mo. period
2nd offer: $550/$4k spending/3 mo. period

(No mention of agreement to keep card for 12 mos)

I declined, stating our spending habits have changed and we no longer will be using the perks the Platinum offers.

They did offer to downgrade our card to Gold and prorate the fee. I declined, I just referred my significant other and got the 15k pts while he will get 75k pts on a Gold card after spending 4k in 3 months.

We’d have to spend $8k in 3 months to attain 130k points or $8k in 3 months for 75k points on new Gold and essentially a free Platinum till July 2022. Thoughts?

I've had the Aspire card since inception and have never asked for a retention offer. Minimal spend over the past 18 mos compared to previous years. AF just hit and I asked for retention offer via chat. Got the same offer--10K Hilton points no spend req.

If you can meet the minimum spend on both without stretching yourselves thin or buying unneeded things, might as well, right? Nice to have the benefits when needed for another year of "free" membership - assuming the $4k would be spend no matter what.
