Reminder: you must enroll and select AA as your airline BEFORE making a reimbursable purchase. "Please call the number on the back of your Card to select a qualifying airline."

Summary of Reimbursements.

  • Elite Status Buyback
  • External Reservation Fee
  • Five Star Service
  • MCE/Seat Selection
  • Mileage Multipler

AMEX AA Reimbursement NOT Approved

  • Close-In Ticket Fee
  • Elite Challenges
  • Gift Cards
  • Inexpensive tickets
  • Infant Fees
  • Miles Purchase from AA.com
  • Wifi (per flight)
50/50 on Whether it gets Approved
  • Award Taxes/Fees
  • Change Fee
  • Pet Fee
  • Upfares

Data Points on automatically reimbursed incidentals since 2017:

Admirals Club Memberships: Admirals Club Passes: Admirals Club Food/Drinks: Award Cancellation Fee*: Award Taxes/Fees: Baggage*: Change Fee*: Close-In Ticket Fee*: Elite 500-mile Stickers: Elite Challenges: Elite Status Buyback: External Reservation Fee: Five Star Service: Gift Cards:
  • No
Infant Fees: MCE/Seat Selection: Mileage Multipler: Miles Purchase from AA.com: Monthly AA Wifi Subscription Plan: Pet Fee*: Same Day Flight Change: Upfares: Upgrades:
Wifi is provided by one of three third-party providers and is thus not eligible for the incidental credit. Monthly Wifi subscription plans through AA appear to be eligible for automatic credit.

* For items not automatically reimbursed but which are not excluded by Amex, you can try and request manual reimbursement from American Express; however, you may need to wait 14-28 days first.

NOT WORKING: Partial payment by gift card or voucher combined with partial payment by Amex doesn't work. Full payment of a ticket under $100 stopped working sometime in 2020.

Is there any way to purchase a coach ticket and then either at the time of purchase or after change it to first class by paying additional money and get Amex reimbursement on the extra money, other that through a kiosk at the time of travel? Thanks!
I am wondering the same thing. I already purchased my coach ticket and on the app, it says I can move to First for +$XXX. Has anyone had experience in getting these fare upgrades to be reimbursed? Thanks.

I've done that probably 3 times and none were reimbursed.

In a somewhat surprising reimbursement, I bought a $43 MIA-DEN AA ticket from AMEX Travel and it quickly triggered reimbursement from the airline fee credit. I suspect any fares below $50 may automatically qualify. MIA-DEN on AA is currently as low as $43 from AMEX Travel (a discount of $6 from booking on AA.com) and DEN-LAX as low as $35 (vs $40 on AA.com). Both are main cabin, not basic economy.

Was your purchase made on a personal Plat card? If yes, its likely that you got the Amex travel credit, not the airline incidental fee credit. If not, then you got lucky .

I changed my flight to a different time of day and incurred a $32.01 fare difference. Triggered reimbursement automatically on the regular Platinum.

Has anyone recently tried to purchase something at the Admirals Club?

Awesome TY. I have a long layover at CLT and get there after the centurion lounge closes and might want some real food for dinner.

Does not match our experience this year, but Amex is also sometimes YMMV with things like award fees on AA.
