CAUTION: In February 2019, American Airlines changed the coding of gift card transactions. Although there are a few successful data points since, in general, Gift Card purchases are now explicitly identified, and no longer reimbursed by American Express.

Reminder: you must enroll and select your airline BEFORE making a reimbursable purchase. http://www.americanexpress.com/airlinechoice -or- "Call the number on the back of your Card to select a qualifying airline."

Data Points on automatically reimbursed incidentals since 2017:

Admirals Club Memberships: Admirals Club Passes: Admirals Club Food/Drinks: Award Cancellation Fee*: Award Taxes/Fees: Baggage*: Change Fee*: Close-In Ticket Fee*: Elite 500-mile Stickers: Elite Challenges: External Reservation Fee: Five Star Service: Infant Fees: MCE/Seat Selection: Mileage Multipler: Pet Fee*: Same Day Flight Change: Upfares: Upgrades:
Wifi is provided by one of three third-party providers and is thus not eligible for the incidental credit.

* For items not automatically reimbursed but which are not excluded by Amex, you can try and request manual reimbursement from American Express; however, you may need to wait 14-28 days first.

The gift cards don't expire, so the cardholder or someone close to them is sure to use them at some point.
Except that last I heard, only $50 per gift card worked for Amex credits on Delta GC purchases, and Delta only allows redeeming up to 3 gift cards per ticket purchase, while AA allows up to 8. So those with Plat or Aspire who need to get to $200 or $250 (or with more than on Amex card with this benefit), each year you'd get more cards than you can on just one Delta ticket purchase (those with multiple cards, maybe even more than two Delta ticket purchases!). So they could be kinda hard for some to use up because of this redemption restriction (and the limit of $50 on purchasing), if they rarely want/need to fly Delta. (I'm not familiar with the Southwest rules.)

You can use more than 3 GCs for Delta flights now, though you have to do it over the phone (from https://www.delta.com/content/www/en...card-faqs.html : "Up to 3 gift cards can be redeemed per transaction on delta.com. If you wish to redeem more than 3 cards for a single purchase, please call 1-800-221-1212 and a Reservations Specialist will be able to assist you." )

Yes, and regardless, neither Delta nor Southwest gift cards expire, so at some point either the cardholder or someone close will get the full value. I think it's more than just plausible that AA has done with gift card coding what Delta and Southwest will do within the next year. AA might have implemented a demand from Amex that Delta and Southwest are in the process of implementing.

What's the recent thinking on seat upgrade fees being reimbursed? I'm looking at a $118 fee to upgrade to Main Cabin Extra on a flight to Europe. Trying to decide if I should use my Amex and hope for the credit to work, or use a different card. Thanks for any insight or data points!

This is the AA thread but I didn't want people to see the above post and get a bit misled but what Delta is saying. There are still limits on the number of GCs that can be redeemed with Delta and the datapoints are all over the place about what phone representatives at Delta will do. Some will say they can't do more than 3 gift cards, some have spoken to supervisors who have approved up to five cards and no more, somebody else claims they got a rep to do six cards, but its certainly not unlimited and with $50 gift cards you may have difficulty getting the full airline credit value (e.g., Aspire $250 = 5xGCs x2) if you just want to save up your cards for a more expensive single redemption. Its probably ok for people who are going to have multiple Delta flights anyway, because they can spread the GCs out over multiple flights but for people who have very few flights via Delta it can be difficult to redeem all these small value cards.

I can confirm, at least for Aspire card. Phoned in this morning, got a lovely agent, willing to try to affect the change from AA. Had to attempt a “system override” twice, but second time designated airline successfully changed.
Didn’t seem to matter which airline I wanted to change to.
Did seem to matter that I had not tried to use credit yet this year.
Note: this did not seem like an easy process for the agent, who had to try at least 2 different avenues to make the change, so certainly YMMV.

Just flew roundtrip on AA MIA-CUN and upgraded to business class since it was nearly the cost of the baggage. Interestingly it was coded two different ways:

MIA: UPGRADE CHARGE = No Credit
CUN: ADDITIONAL COLLECTION = YES Credit

So depends on how they code it, I upgraded online for both so I can't say if it's actually country-specific and the USA is better at coding transaction ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I guess I'll take what I can get an burn the rest off with baggage fees, since all these basic economy tickets are downloading the baggage cost anyway...baggage is covered right?

Has anyone been able to change it if part of the credit was already used up?

I split my Admirals Club membership renewal fee between the Hilton Aspire and Platinum cards on March 1st. The credits posted for both accounts on March 4th.

Yes, I'd like to understand this as well. It had been my understanding that AA would not take multiple payment methods for Admirals Club memberships.

I renewed in person at the Admirals Club. They do have the ability to split payments.

I cancelled an award flight last year and I did not get the credit automatically.

It was coded as Document Type: FREQUENT FLYER FEE/PURCHASE

I called up and was told to wait the full 4 weeks before they could take a look at it. After 4 weeks I called in. Every time I was connected to the Indian call center I was told that award cancellation fees are not an eligible purchase. After finally reaching a US rep they also said it was not eligible but was able to credit me $75 a a gesture of good will. I don't know how everyone else was able to get the full reimbursement.
