CAUTION: In February 2019, American Airlines changed the coding of gift card transactions. Although there are a few successful data points since, in general, Gift Card purchases are now explicitly identified, and no longer reimbursed by American Express.
Reminder: you must enroll and select your airline BEFORE making a reimbursable purchase. http://www.americanexpress.com/airlinechoice -or- "Call the number on the back of your Card to select a qualifying airline."

Happy you are incorrect, as mine was the same, bought $250 ($100,$100, $50) after upgrading my Hilton card on 12/30, picking my airline the night of 12/30, and buying gift cards morning of 12/31. Credits posted 1/4, and my benefits still show $250 remaining for my airline incidental for 2019. Phew...

saw a few DP about airlines can be switched at any time by an agent via call or chat. but after JAN, you cant do it yourself online. amex has to do it. is this true? anyone try it?

I had a weird one today. I purchased a $100 virtual GC from AA on Jan 5th with my platinum card and today I got a $35 credit and corresponding $35 meter movement. Has anyone had that happen before?

youre fine for 2019. based on the few DP about 12/31 purchases, it has all worked for 2018 so far. dont always bet on the last min credit, but this time, it worked. so your OK.

It worked last year too. It's the date of the transaction that governs the year of the statement credit, apparently.

Not necessarily a counter DP. You didn't explain when you made your airline selection. There are oodles of datapoints of people not getting a credit even for $50 e-gift-cards if they buy them "too soon" after making the airline selection. (In my case, I waited weeks; I just edited my original datapoint post to clarify that. You probably don't need to wait weeks, but you certainly seem to need to wait at least a day or two.)
- I grabbed 2x $50 gift cards immediately after selecting AA as her airline mid December and they never posted. I'll have to call in about it when the 4 weeks guarantee period is expired. I'm not looking forward to that...

Towards the end of December, I selected AA as my airline and let it marinate for 24 hours. I bought 2x $100 gift cards and the credit posted within a few days as expected.
I don't think these events were coincidence. There's a data propagation time that Amex didn't think would affect anyone because real life 'fees' are typically incurred days or weeks after the airline selection is made.
