CAUTION: In February 2019, American Airlines changed the coding of gift card transactions. Although there are a few successful data points since, in general, Gift Card purchases are now explicitly identified, and no longer reimbursed by American Express.

Reminder: you must enroll and select your airline BEFORE making a reimbursable purchase. http://www.americanexpress.com/airlinechoice -or- "Call the number on the back of your Card to select a qualifying airline."

Data Points on automatically reimbursed incidentals since 2017:

Admirals Club Memberships: Admirals Club Passes: Admirals Club Food/Drinks: Award Cancellation Fee*: Award Taxes/Fees: Baggage*: Change Fee*: Close-In Ticket Fee*: Elite 500-mile Stickers: Elite Challenges: External Reservation Fee: Five Star Service: Infant Fees: MCE/Seat Selection: Mileage Multipler: Pet Fee*: Same Day Flight Change: Upfares: Upgrades:
Wifi is provided by one of three third-party providers and is thus not eligible for the incidental credit.

* For items not automatically reimbursed but which are not excluded by Amex, you can try and request manual reimbursement from American Express; however, you may need to wait 14-28 days first.

How can I use the amex credit for award $75 booking fee? And can I use gift card to pay award taxes or $75 fee?

Just yesterday (Dec 30th) I realized I still had $150 remaining credit for 2017, so I purchased an award ticket with a leg through LHR and a plan to change it later to all AA metal and get all of BA's obscene fees back. I was dumb enough to assume that the purchase would post over night, but of course it didn't. I wouldn't want this ticket to count against my 2018 $200, so I was considering canceling the ticket before the 24 hrs are up, but first I called Amex to ask which year it will count against. She told me that the transaction date counts, not the posting date, so it will go against my 2017 amount.

I'm not totally convinced that what she said will actually happen, but I am pretty confident that if it doesn't, I'll be able to call in and get it straightened out based on what she told me. (they do keep records of calls, right?)

I asked the same question above and no one replied, but the benefits page at Amex explicitly says "purchase date" and not posted date.

Yeah, it may take a fight, but I think it should work out. Next year I just don't want to be as dumb and wait until the last few days of the year.

I thought earlier United charges had triggered the credit but they hadn't. I was able to switch to AA and buy gift cards, but as mostly a UA flyer, it wasn't my preferred course of action.

Semi-related, but do Amex charges post throughout the day or as part of an overnight sweep-type process? I've never paid close enough attention to notice. Thanks.

It appears to me that they post throughout the day and not in some sort of nightly batch posting.

Does the award ticket redepositing fee of $150 qualify? It would be great if someone can shed some light on it.

Bought two AA $100 on Dec. 30, posted today (Jan. 1) but as Dec. 30 purchases. No reimbursement yet, and Benefits section still showing $200 available through the end of 2018. We'll see what happens.

How's this for just-in-time applying (Schwab Platinum):

12/24: Applied for card, approved
12/27: Card received, set Airline as AA
12/28: Bought 1 x $100 GC, posted same day
12/29: Bought 1 x $100 GC, posted same day
12/30: $100 credit
12/31: $100 credit

Now to start all over for 2018!

Purchased a $100 GC today, 1/1/2018.
Will keep you posted if I get reimbursed. Fingers crossed GCs continue to get reimbursed in 2018.
