Westin Resort and The Romanos, Costa Navarino, Greece [Master Thread]

All in all, we had a fabulous stay at what we think was the best Westin we have ever stayed at.
The drive from Athens took about 4 hours, it was pretty easy, but a lot of toll booths (six or seven), so bring Euros with you!
Upon arrival (4pm-ish) we were told that the room would be ready in a few minutes, and we were given free beverages at the bar while waiting. We had booked the lowest category room, and was upgraded to a Family suite. I asked about an upgrade to a Premier suite because I really wanted to be seafront (it was too cold to use the outside pools, so any room/suite with an infinity pool was not interesting), but was told firmly no – unless I wanted to pay an extra 120 EUR per day.
It is unclear to me what the standard platinum upgrade is, but I did notice online that we were initially pre-upgraded to a premier infiniy room (not a suite). It may very well be that we only got the Family suite because we asked for a real suite at check-in. The hotel is so spread out that is really difficult to know where the different room categories are. But one advice: Most rooms/suites with infinity/private pool are not private. I would check those ones first before paying top EURs. And very few rooms/suites are seafront - though a lot have partial sea view.
The Family suite was elegant, almost W-like. Very tastefully decorated living room and bed room, with two baths and rainforest showers. Large balconies. Not sure about the "family"-name, though. The bedroom and main bathroom has no divider, and there is a bath tub in the middle of the room (similar to the apartments at W Ft Lauderdale). So not much privacy if you want to take a bath etc.
We were on the second floor, and it was fairly quiet from above. I did however hear those carts they use to bring people and stuff around, so if you are noise sensitive, check if you room is facing one the small roads and/or is on the ground floor next to them. They sound like small cars, and are in use day and night.
We had lunch twice at hotel - once at the bar next to the reception ("1827") and once at Flame. Reasonably priced, but the food was nothing special. If you have a car, go to Pylos instead. Very charming small town, with a lot of restaurants.
As others has mentioned, there is no real system at breakfast. You just find a table and wait for someone to serve you coffee. No problem in April, but I can imagine that the area will be a zoo in August.
Gym was nice - and there is a heated indoor pool.
This resort must be a haven for kids and golfers, but is also suitable for couples when the Romanos is closed. However, you really need a car not to get bored after a few days, especially off-season. It was really exciting to explore the surrounding area, which has a lot to offer historically.
All in all, we would return to this hotel complex in a heartbeat. It is a little challenging getting to and from Costa Navarino, but Arion in Athens as a stop-over at the beginning and end at trip was also very nice.

We didn't experience any of the issues previously reported at Breakfast in Morias. Yes, it was busy at the peak times but the staff managed well and everything seemed fairly organized. Quality and consistency was as good as I've experienced in any resort. We were offered a more intimate breakfast for plats in the Taverna but didn't really enjoy this (food variety and quality surprisingly nowhere near as good as the main buffet). Italian restaurant was good. Flame steaks were decent .Souvlakerie was used a couple of times and good for lunch or early dinner for the kids. The only suggestion for improvement on the F&B side would be the addition of another family dining option (maybe Thai/Indian) to add some variety for families.
Given the peak season we had low upgrade expectations (I tried but failed to use SNAs), however midway through our stay we got a fantastic suite upgrade. I would add however that the standard rooms are very well appointed and would have been more than adequate.
Staff were very good; this is clearly a very well run operation that seems to cope well with the challenges of having a lot of seasonal staff. Any housekeeping or front desk requests were dealt with very quickly and efficiently. Management were accessible and very responsive. Frankly it is difficult to find fault with anything in this respect.
I would recommend getting a car to explore the surrounding villages (Pylos, Gialova, Methoni) and beach (Golden and Voidokilia). For a longer stay it was nice to get out and explore. We found the nearby beaches particular good for our toddlers as the sea at the resort was a little choppy due to the very pleasant summer breezes and made paddling for the little ones a little difficult. We hired bikes the one day - a great activity and nice way to explore the local area.
Quite an eclectic mix of clientele there during our stay. Mostly Greek during our first week due to a National holiday - very little sign of austerity during this period! The second week saw a influx of Europeans (Brits, French and a large number of Germans here for a corporate event).
No opportunity to play golf this time, but I did the Westin running route around the front nine and the course looked immaculate (I am particularly keen to play the signature 6th hole next time - stunning!)
The resort is now in its 6th year and it is maturing into a truly world-class resort and definitely my favorite *wood property. We'll be back again in 2016 for sure. Highly recommended.

Here is a copy and paste of my review on Trip Advisor:
Wow!!! Wow!! Wow!!! Where should I start? We just came back from this paradise where my family of 4 spent 5 nights and we are still speechless about this place. First of all the resort is amazing in every single detail. From the time you enter the resort you know you are in a special place. You then get to this stunning lobby with a view of the Ionic sea and you are welcomed by the most amazing staff you will ever find in any hotel. Everyone from the valet drivers to the front desk, to the housekeeper to the guy in the pool, everyone has this genuine smile on their face showing they are happy you are there and want to make your stay even more amazing. We were upgraded to an Ionic Deluxe Suite with a private pool and when we entered the room it was jaw dropping. The room was very very modern with everything you can imagine and not imagine. The private pool was stunning and we had a hot tub inside the master bedroom with water flowing from the ceiling. Wow!!!! All restaurants were great serving all sorts of food from fine dining to quick snacks all at very reasonable prices. Breakfast was one of the best I ever had in any luxury hotel with all sorts of fresh Greek food from the local area. We spent time visiting stunning beaches close by including the famous Voidokilia beach and eating at small villages like Gialova, Pylos and Marathopolis which all have great restaurants serving fresh food. Then we would go back to the hotel and spend time at the beach and pools with the kids. The hotel has so many activities that it is hard to describe them all here. A stunning spa, indoor pool, hot tubs, gym, kids aquatic center, bowling, golf, kart racing, etc... In sum, this is the most amazing resort we ever stayed with our kids. I cannot thank enough the staff which makes this place even more magic. Again, they are just nice people that are happy to make you happy. They go above and beyond any other hotel staff ever done for us. To give an example, during a breakfast one of the managers approached us to ask how was our stay and during the conversation we mentioned we were leaving very early on the last day to drive back to Athens and we would not be able to have breakfast. During check out we were given 4 breakfast boxes for us to take in the car with us with all sorts of foods and beverages you can imagine. Again, wow, wow, wow!!!!! We will definitely consider going back to The Romanos in the near future as we already realize that it will be very hard to beat the experience we had there in any other place we decide to visit.

I am a Starwood Gold.
I wrote the hotel to ask about upgrade possibilities ( a seaview from a garden view) and got back a polite response "you can enjoy all benefits of Starwood Gold membership upon arrival in our reception and upon availability as well."
As we are going off season I was hoping for a bit more reassurance.
Can anyone share their Gold experience at this property?

I can only say amazing things of the staff and I am pretty sure if they are not sold out they will be very accommodating to your requests.

Recently they loaded pay and points at $110US ( actually about $125 w/ taxes) plus 6000 *wood points.
We don't have a huge cache of points ( about 38K). My inclination is that the 214E a night is the right way to go.....
Your thoughts?
Thanks.

With regard to your question, I think you are probably right as the C&P rate doesn't compare very well with the senior rate you are getting:
(Taxes not included below)
€1 = ~$1.10
€214 = ~ $235
Senior rate - (C&P rate $ amount) = (C&P rate starpoint amount)
$235 - $110 = 6000 starpoints= $135
This values the Starpoints at 0.02c/point. Not a particularly good value.
I booked later in the season when the rates are much higher and was getting more than 0.06c/point when using C&P.

If you are going in May for a 2 night stay, you'll probably be in a good position to score an upgrade. In May, an upgrade to a room with an infinity pool may not be much use as the pools are unheated and the weather may not be warm enough to take advantage of it. Enjoy the property. It truly is a wonderful hotel in a wonderful area.

Resort continues to offer a lot, beautiful, well maintained. Staff are friendly throughout. It seems to be ageing well. Despite high season and occupancy crowds were well managed (including breakfast which was better organized than in the past). Great surroundings with nice tavernas and beach bars.
Some negatives:
- I don't think this place gets many individual bookings (mostly tour guests), and therefore does not see a need to treat Plats in a special way. I have never received a great upgrade here (ok, wait, the upgrade to a seaview room was labeled great by the FDA).
- the prices over the years have gone crazy. Example: we went for lunch at Flame. The menu on the website listed the Burger at 10 Euros. When we got there it was 29. The same Burger. They apologized for having 'an old menu' on their website. We left. 190% increase in a few years - really ? Did not play golf as a round is now 130 Euros. Disappointing sushi at Inbi, totally overpriced.
- the resort attracts a certain crowd in high season, rich folks, investment bankers. Many of these people see no need to treat staff with any respect whatsoever. It's embarassing.
- Brits seem to outperform Germans when it comes to reserving loungers by the pool. All taken by 08:30 but nobody shows up until 11:00.
We will be back but not during August and not if the SNAs don't clear.
