I've realized one thing about the NEXUS. I get to skip the 15 minute line up at Customs, but I have to wait 15 minutes for my suitcase so I don't save much time. However if I had no carry-on then It would be great.

We use NEXUS for the US Departure gates in YOW and connections at YYZ and it pays off big-time there.

And once through NEXUS on arrival, I have time to use the loo without wondering how long the immigration line is getting while I'm in there (if there even is a loo on that side of security) and stretch, put on my coat, find my keys and parking chit and flip my money back to the home currency. So it saves a little time.

There's no use in me going to carry-on only since my dh insists on checking a bag so he has less to worry about in the airport.

Driver's License Renewals

I'm in BC and I just had to renew my driver's license. It has no picture ID on it and it'll take a month or so for the picture version to arrive.

Does anyone know if this paper driver's license is sufficent to update my Nexus?

It says on the paper, "This Driver's Licence is not recommended for the purpose of identification," so it will probably not be accepted. They say the card will take a few weeks but I got mine in 3 days earlier this month - and yes it's the new "high-tech" version. If you need to use NEXUS and your old licence would be still valid I would just leave it until you get the permanent one in the mail. The temp one is valid for 30 days only anyway.

Yeah, I read that. Yet, the paper license is still valid if you get pulled over and the police want to see your driver's license. Technically, your "old" license is still valid for five additional years if it's renewed, hence no change in driver's license number unlike your passport. I also read that Nexus (back east) no longer requires you to update your driver's license. One person got an email back from Nexus advising him of this.

I'm planning a short x-border trip in the next few days. I'm not sure if I will be hassled. I'll have other backup documentation with me that's on my Nexus profile.

I had my Nexus interview yesterday at YYZ and I specifically asked about updating DL info whenever it changes. The agent said the only document that has to be updated with Nexus is your passport.

By the way, the interview was painless and the interviewers were polite, occasionally bordering on pleasant. Given the type of work they do (and the public they have to deal with) they came across as very professional.

At YYZ, I've updated my drivers license twice within the last year or two, and never been told that it doesn't need to be updated, the agents always took a copy and updated it. I would always go in and try to have it updated, as sometimes, the front line and others don't always coordinate. The Nexus guide says that information needs to be updated, so at least try to do it. If you are refused, then that's that. I would hate to have my Nexus stripped on a technicality like this. Last time I updated my DL, they even asked me about my employment status, and gave me a bit of a hard time for not having updated that with them (apparently, you are supposed to).

I moved from MA to TX two years ago, but still have a MA drivers license (as I still use that address sometimes) but my "official" address is in Texas now. Will this pose a problem for my application? It says I can use a utility bill or bank statement to prove my current address. I have those items for my TX address.

Thanks!!

They need to see your DL and will take a copy of it during your interview. Lots of people have different permanent and mailing addresses, so I don't think this should be a problem from a Nexus perspective.

A bit OT, however, what I would be more concerned about is the use of your MA drivers license if you officially reside in Texas now. Some states are really hard on those that do things like this - for most states, you are supposed to switch DL's within 30 days of moving there (there are exceptions of course, for example, those living in a different state for college). I'm not sure you're situation, but if you spend most of your time in Texas, you really should switch your license. If you get caught, there can be severe penalties.

Next week I will be in YYZ for my interview and if I get my card can I use it the next day when I come back to the USA?

Under normal circumstances yes. In my case, there was some issue with my fingerprints not getting the green light somewhere in the US system (they blamed it on a rookie fingerprint taker in the Champlain NY office)... so it took a few weeks to sort it out.

I thought now that they are doing the new biometric cards, they aren't produced on the spot, but sent. Look back in this thread, but think most reports have been that they do come pretty quick, within a week or so.

Didn't think of the time delay on the biometric card. My on the spot card experience was with the old card.

Gogie Mar 20, 2009 9:29 am

I had my interview on Monday of this week. They said the card would be mailed out and I should get it in two weeks.

Update: My card arrived in the mail today (Friday). Pretty quick turnaround (4 days)!

Just an update. I called the Nexus enrollment centre near me and I was told that I MUST visit a centre and update my driver's license info to show the new expiry date. Failure to do so may result in the revocation of my Nexus card.

The one thing you are guaranteed with Nexus and the respective border agencies is inconsistency.
