So I just got my conditional approval today (US Memorial Day, of all days) after having applied on April 20th. I have a string of flights coming up starting Thursday and so after some clicking around I managed to get an interview at Landsdowne for Wednesday (about a three hour drive, not too bad).

My question - will I get a KTN number that I can add to my various flights shortly after the interview, or do I have to wait for the card to show in the mail?

I presume if I do get one, and can add it, it won't work for my Thursday flights since they'll be too soon. However, my next set won't be until next week, and as I have a tight grouping of flights it would be _real_ handy to be eligible for Pre-check. However, if I have to wait for the card anyway, I might just reschedule at a slightly closer center for later in June (Buffalo/Niagara Falls).

EDIT: Actually, is the KTN just my PASS ID number? Can I add that to my AA/US reservations now? I presume that's not a good idea until after the interview...

Your card will take 4-5 days to arrive, though they'll say 7-10 probably. They will likely tell you that you can start using GE immediately. You should ask them the question about using the number you have (I presume that is in your GOES account). I did not pay attention to whether the number on my NEXUS card is the same GOES number I had before I got the card. Maybe someone else can comment. However since you will see them on Wednesday, it's best to ask them. I would not add it to your reservation before the interview. It is presumptuous, and it may actually cause a flag since it is not in the database of approved KTNs now.

Yes, it is the same number.

You can add it now, but you will not receive PreCheck benefits until after your interview. In fact, reports are that if you add it now and you had previously been getting PreCheck benefits (via random selection or your elite status or whatever), you may actually specifically not get PreCheck after adding your KTN until you complete the interview. Since you are not flying until after your interview, I don't think adding it now will hurt.

Once you interview, your KTN number and thus PreCheck and Global Entry benefits are active immediately. You won't be able to use a NEXUS lane at a land border crossing until you receive and activate your card, though, since the card is required to be waved at the scanner in the NEXUS lane.

I would add your number now but not do online check-in until after you complete you interview, as your KTN will be submitted to TSA during the check-in process, and so you won't receive PreCheck benefits unless you check in (and thus your KTN is submitted) after your interview is completed.

The numbers on my NEXUS card and my GOES account are the same, so that would be your KTN. The CBP agent gave me a sheet on how to use the KTN to get Precheck.

Once your GOES account says "Approved" then you can start using the GE machine and your KTN to get Precheck. You can't use the NEXUS lanes until you have your card.

I did my interview on a Saturday and had my card on Thursday.

Thanks everyone. My flight out is on one reservation with AA, with all my other flights are bunched together next week on a US reservation. Sounds like what makes sense is to leave the KTN off my AA reservation (since it won't do me any good) and add it to my US reservation as soon as it shows as approved.

Mostly I wasn't sure if I would have the number and approval in time, and if not, the drive wouldn't make sense. Since I already have the number and it just has to show as approved, looks like I have a good excuse to drive my new car :D

TSA Pre-Check when flying Air Canada

From today's AC Altitude newsletter:
"Air Canada is the first non-US airline to join the US Transportation Security Administration’s (TSA) Pre-Check program, allowing eligible customers to experience accelerated security screening at most US departure airports, by leaving shoes, belts and lighter jackets on, and not having to remove laptops and liquids from carry-on baggage."

I was wondering if TSA would ever let a foreign airline participate in Pre-Check, but the day has finally come! (It looks like the change actually happened about a month ago, but I couldn't find any mention of it on this thread.)

It has its own thread, started 29 April.

Is there still a Nexus machine at YYZ Terminal 1 ?

I know we all got the e mail saying how all nexus Kiosks were being replaced in Canadaian pre Clearance Areas.

I spoke to a nexus rep on Friday who says , they actually have to keep at lease one Nexus Kiosk in every are and as of may 21 , 2014 there was a kiosk replaced in all US Pre Clearance areas.

However she said , she was not 100 percent sure.

Im flying in a few hours out of YYZ Terminal and was wondering if there is anyone that can confirm this ?

Thank you.

I last went thru US pre-clearance at YYZ T1 on Thu May 22. Used Global Entry. I don't think I saw any Nexus machines. But I can't be 100% sure.

I'm interested in whether you found that there was one. I know GE is easier process, but NEXUS machine may be more useful to some. Please post what you found when you got there. Thanks.

Applying within 6 months of Passport Expiry

My neighbours have just applied for Nexus. They are Canadian Permanent Residents from Iran. One of their Iranian passports is set to expire in September -- they've applied for a replacement, but it hasn't come in yet.

Has anyone encountered this? Will the fact that the passport is within 6 months of expiry prevent them from getting conditional approval? What happens if the renewed passport comes in between now and the interview?

Thanks!

flyquiet Jun 1, 2014 12:38 pm

Any changes of information, including new passport and correction of typos made during application, is taken to the interview. You cannot revise the application.
As far as your neighbours' situation, there's nothing you/they can do about it at this point. They've applied already, so regardless of the answer to the question, there's nothing to do but wait and find out. However, if there is a requirement to have a passport valid for a certain amount of time past the date of application, it would be stated in the information online at the GOES website.

I thought so too -- I figured GOES would have errored out if there was a problem, and I can't find anything about it in the Nexus CBSA or CBP pages. We're crossing our fingers.

Make sure you clarify between connections and the normal entry for transborder. I don't think I've seen a NEXUS machine at the connections security checkpoint in months.
