I just received an email.

Nexus members can now apply for an APEC Business Travelers card (finally!)

Just log onto GOES, Manage your Nexus membership and the application link is there

$70. Seems like it will require another interview once approved

Awesome, thanks! I just applied as well. Will report back when I hear back from them.

Just to close the loop on this, I received the conditional approval shortly after submitting the application and snagged an interview on July 10 at YUL.

coming home via yyz on Sunday. Nexus machines were there.

The kidlet was having trouble with his iris scan so we went to special services. She said she thinks they are moving to fingerprints as well. Said the iris machines are too finicky

Applied for Nexuson May 12th

Still in pending status.

For some reason I though you would have an answer within 30 days but application is still pending.

Anyone know how long the wait time is now or where to find out that information?

Thanks

I hope not. I think the iris scan is kind of cool. Never had an issue either.

So, for anyone who's interested, I managed to push my interview up to today. 2 major headaches:
  1. The NEXUS enrolment office at YUL is still not setup to take digital signatures despite actively taking appointments for ABTC. They expect to be up and running by June 24, but the agent I dealt with didn't seem convinved about this.
  2. The agent I dealt with was equally convinced that only American citizens may apply for the ABTC; he was shocked that I was approved.

I was asked to call back next week to see if the signature reader was setup and that they'd take me as a walk-in. To be continued...

Niagara Falls, NY - Iris Scan?

Anyone know how anal-retentive the Nexus Centre in Niagara Falls, NY is about removing contacts for the iris scan (during enrollment)?

I really don't want to and there's no logic in having to. I wear contacts 7 days a week so all scans would be done while wearing contacts.

I don't think they care if you wear contacts or not. Wearing it might prevent the scan from being successfully captured (or require multiple attempts).

ABTC has nothing to do with NEXUS as one can get ABTC without NEXUS if they have another trusted traveler program. There is an US ABTC thread in the Asia forum.

As a Canadian, ABTC is only available to NEXUS cardholders who apply through GOES and who complete the enrolment process at a NEXUS office. While the mods are more than welcome to move my posts as necessary, I'd say that hardly qualifies as having "nothing to do with NEXUS."

Didn't realized CBSA announced they were starting ABTC. I also didn't see anything to indicate you were referring to Canada ABTC.

As Canada outsourced the process to US CBP, this may still be better off in a separate Canada ABTC thread or the US ABTC thread.

my sister did her NEXUS Interview 7 days ago and has not received her Pass yet in the mail (my pass took 5 days) when we Login to her GOES account... it still shows the appointment with no "approval letter" or change in status... (my status changed 24hrs after the interview was completed)

I think the Customs agent might have "screwed up" and not finalized the paperwork (the photo & fingerprints were taken) and the agent said we should receive the pass in 2-5 days.

has anyone run into this problem before? can I actually call them on the phone or am I going to have to drive down to the NEXUS office to take care of this... I need to receive her pass by this Friday... She is disabled and with Canada Day /4th of July we are looking at literally a 2-4 hour wait at one of the busy boarder crossing..

worse case if she does not get it in time & we use the Nexus Lane.. with my pass + her Passport card with a Nexus Letter showing her trusted traveler# & that it's basically approved in the system but card not received ... is that a $150 fine + losing my Nexus card ... because the local Nexus Office screwed up.. (she cannot be stuck in a car more then about 2hrs with her medical condition - that's why we started this whole process for her in March & it's taken until last week to get an "early appointment"

Call the office where she did her interview. The agent(s) may have forgotten to push the "Approved" button.

If you try to use the NEXUS lane with her in the vehicle without her NEXUS card, you'll lose yours. All occupants must have their card in their possession when using the NEXUS lane. Don't think you can drop her at the border, have her walk across and you use the NEXUS lane. They'll pull your card for that, too. You'll have to use the regular lanes until she gets her card.

By the docs, if you have US and/or Canadian citizenship, the card alone is sufficient. If you are merely a legal permanent resident of one or the other, you also need your passport.

While I hesitate to bump the already well-trod "is passport needed by air" discussion, I want to suggest that the rules may have changed recently...

The current page reads (bolding mine)
http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/prog/nexus/faq-eng.html#a11

Can NEXUS cards be used as proof of identification and to denote citizenship in non-NEXUS lanes when entering Canada?

Yes. NEXUS cards are now accepted as proof of identification and to denote citizenship when entering Canada by land, air (when entering Canada from the U.S.), or marine ports of entry. This means that Canadian or U.S. citizens who are NEXUS members may use their membership card when entering Canada by land, air or boat when using non-NEXUS lanes.

NEXUS members who are permanent residents of Canada or the U.S. are still required to travel with a passport and proof of permanent residence, and may be requested to present these documents to the officer upon arrival at the border.

NEXUS members who choose to use their NEXUS card in a non-NEXUS lane will be processed as a regular traveller and will not receive the benefit of expedited entry.
Notice that as recently as December it read (bolding theirs):

Niagara tried to take my iris scan with my glasses on but my lens coating prevented good image acquisition.

I don't see why you wouldn't be allowed to try but if the contacts prevent the scan from working correctly you'll either have to take them off or not get your scan recorded.

At Champlain, NY border, that was the first thing we were told as we stepped up to have the iris scans done -- "if you have contacts on, please remove them". None of us have contacts, but it seemed like a requirement.
