OK - Just got back. So there are no nexus machines in the Pre Clearance Area of YYZ Terminal 1. There are rumours that there will be 1 Nexus machine , but that may or may not happen. Upon arriving early Sunday morning to YYZ , 6 AM , the Nexus office was open. I went in and spoke to an officer , who said they were open early to handle the many appoinments. (usually open 8). He said that if for waheter reason you dont want to give them your prints on file , or have problems using GE , there will ALWAYS be an office in Booth # 1 , right next to the GE Kiosks and he can help you with the process. That being said , It was early Sunday AM , and did not really want to talk to an officer so I used the new computers that are available for CDN Citizens , the process wa simple , It printed out my receipt , took it to an officer at t able (not the regular booths) who just verfiied my passport and I was on my way , no questions asked.

I also recevied this e mail.
"Hello,

At Toronto Pearson the USCBP area only has the Global Entry kiosks to process clients including Nexus clients who were able to process their fingerprints. If you were unable to do fingerprints to be processed at the Global kiosks you will be able to be processed at booth 1 where there is an officer present to assist those members without fingerprints on file.

I hope that this has sufficiently addressed your concerns. Please feel free to contact us again if you need.

Regards,
(Officer Name Removed)

My wife returned to Canada at YUL two days ago. She went through the NEXUS lane and said there were no iris scan machines - just a CBSA officer checking NEXUS cards. She didn't ask anything about it.

Is the iris scan machine being discontinued for entry to Canada too?

26 May they were there at YYZ

Flying to Montreal in July for an interview to get a replacement NEXUS card. I assume since I have no NEXUS card, I can't use NEXUS to enter Canada?

What about Global Entry to pre-clear back to the US?

You might call the station to ask about entering on NEXUS since your iris scans are still presumably on file. At your interview, they would be able to confirm whether you are still eligible for GE on the return trip, but many people were told at their intake interview that they could use GE before the card arrived, so my guess would be that you could. That's just my extrapolation, so let's see if they agree!

Having your NEXUS card in your possession is a requirement for using NEXUS. You may be OK without it; you may not be. I wouldn't risk it.

Global Entry is another matter; AFAIK you don't need to have the card with you to use GE. But if your NEXUS card has already been reported lost it may flag a warning and get you sent to secondary. Who knows what will happen then. Your choice as to whether it's worth the risk.

I would not try entering Canada using Nexus without the physical Nexus card on my person...ever. Its clear in the member guide that having the card is required when using Nexus and must be shown on request. If anyone wants to risk it, obviously its their choice, but I wouldn't risk having the membership revoked (especially when the purpose of travel is to get interviewed for a replacement card). It is, after all, a trusted traveler program.

GE going into the US, shouldn't be a problem, however, since it does not require a card. Just make sure that membership is active - not sure the technical status of Nexus (and with that, GE) is when you've been previously approved but don't have a card. I'd ask the US folks when you're there, particularly since per previous posts on this board, the "approval" letter doesn't always come right away.

I've used GE plenty since the card was lost re-entering the US.

I just wasn't sure how that worked doing preclearance in Canada. Thought they used NEXUS Kiosks...

"Used" being the operative word. The word here is that they are gone now.

The machines physically not there or simply out of order? We're talking about the ones on the right side of the immigrations hall as you are coming down the escalator?

[at YUL] It was her first time using NEXUS at an airport and she doesn't remember any machines being there or not. She just followed all the other NEXUS users through the NEXUS lane where they were met by a CBSA official checking cards. That's all she remembers.

flyquiet Jun 14, 2014 6:03 pm

There was an email not long ago where they said something about upgrading machines, the old machines being on the fritz too much, etc. It could have just been due to that. At YYZ, the main herd goes to one set of machines that are often borked, but there is another set near the foreigners' queues that I found working last time.

I signed up for GE in 2009 when it was still a pilot program. They did not issue cards to us, and now charge $15 to get one. I don't have a card and have not had any problems, whatsoever, using GE over the last five years. The card is not a requirement to have when using GE- just NEXUS.

I just received an email.

Nexus members can now apply for an APEC Business Travelers card (finally!)

Just log onto GOES, Manage your Nexus membership and the application link is there

$70. Seems like it will require another interview once approved

lcohen999 Jun 16, 2014 1:35 pm

Just thought I would add to this (APEC)

Applied June 16th
Approved June 16th

I suspect applications for this are much lower
