The other day arriving YYZ T1, I used the NEXUS kiosks on the left as you enter the room instead of the ones on the far right end. I never really noticed them there before because that is the end the "foreign" people go to, while the Canadians go to the other end. Those machines were working at the time. Did not look to the far end to see if those were working. Actually, the whole hall was empty with nobody waiting to be interviewed at the time, but I still prefer the machines.
However emcampbe is right: you can go to the Special Services desk as a NEXUS holder. I did it once when the machines were down. No fuss no bother.

On that day I went to the kiosks at the far right side of the hall as there was a sign at the entrance of the hall directing people with nexus cards to go there and nothing mentioned of these kiosks on the left side

^

I generally use the ones on the right because it's a shorter walk, but the ones on the left have always been available, in my experience, and are definitely less popular. On a recent arrival there had to have been >20 people in line for the NEXUS machines on the right side. I bailed from the line and went to the left side. No line. Instant nexusification. :p

It's more of a secret row of (working) consoles for those that transit YYZ frequently ;)

Hi I want to apply for Nexus but not sure how to proceed. Where it says
"Have you ever received a waiver of inadmissibility to the U.S. from a U.S. government agency?" Should I answer yes or no?

Last June I was traveling to Buffalo with a friend who decided to roll a marijuana joint in my car when I told him not to as we were about to cross the border. When we got to the border, we were told to go inside. As we were inside getting questioned, a custom agent with a dog walked by us and the dog right away jumps on my friend. The agent separated us and had the dog smell both my friend and I. The dog went right back to my friend as I don't smoke. I even told the lady that and she said it doesn't matter because I'm associated. My car was searched and because my friend had rolled marijuana earlier, they found the piece of paper he rolled with and small residue he left. We were deemed inadmissible and had to turn around. We were told to come back after I cleaned the car. I tried to cross once after this and got waived through.

Now I want to be honest but I heard anything marijuana you'll be denied so what should I put?

Thanks

A "waiver of inadmissibility" is a document.
You either have one or you don't.

https://help.cbp.gov/app/answers/det...erstay,-waiver

On your subsequent trip, I believe you were "waved" through, not "waived" through. Did you pay US$585 to get "waived" or did they gesture with their hand and bid you good-day?

As a side remark, with any luck, that experience will give you food for thought about your travel companions. In my opinion, it was a jerk move on your companion's part.

A CBP officer can refuse you admission for pretty much any reason, and you can rarely make it better by arguing and you can make it worse, and end up with a 5-year ban.

Seriously...your friend rolled a marijuana joint while approaching the border....is he the dumbest human on earth? Why didn't you pull over, stop the car, and throw his stupid *** right out to the curb and go somewhere to search your own car for anything else he might have stashed there.

Encounters like these tend to be documented. This is the sort of thing that could put the kibosh on a NEXUS approval. You might want to save yourself the application fee.

I have a question regarding the NEXUS application. I was telling my friend about the benefits of NEXUS, and they started the application, however, one of the questions asked about previous customs issues. They did have an issue with not declaring items once while entering Canada, and were charged a penalty which they paid. This incident was over twenty years ago, and they have since crossed the border hundreds of times with no issues. They have no intention about lying about this incident, and would answer yes on the application and would be happy to explain the situation. My question is, do you think this would prevent them from getting approved in the first place, or is this a situation where they would be able to explain the situation in the interview? The reason I ask is that they don't want to bother filling out the lengthy application if they going to be denied anyways. If any of you have any experience with this type of situation and applying for NEXUS and can help out, I would appreciate it. Thank you.

On the CBSA website they say you have to wait 6 years after a custom act infraction, so they may be ok, I imagine they may be denied too... http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/prog/nexu...-eng.html#_a3a

Had a 8 year customs violation on record (penalty of about $150?), disclosed upon application and grilled upon interview, but approved thereafter.

Did not have any problems crossing with Nexus since

That link is helpful, and probably explained why I was approved - did not know that it was 6 years, thought it was 5

I was turned around at the border once due to a rat fink lying CBP officer claiming my work visa was not in the system when it darn well was too. I think many people have some kind of bump or wiggle in their interactions with the Eagle Badge Man. Even the stupid stoner friend incident, it's just $50 at risk to apply and potentially be turned down. Quite a few people have posted upthread of cases where they'd had some kind of irregularity in their past and got approved. The most important thing is never lie. I wouldn't write a supplementary letter volunteering information they don't request, but answer the questions they do ask both on the form and in the interview with complete honesty. If $50 is an unacceptable gamble, don't do it, but you'll know one way or the other by the conditional approval. I am not sure I've read anyone here getting a conditional approval then turned down at the interview. Not that there aren't any, but I can't recall seeing any. So it's 4-6 weeks of uncertainty and then you'll know where you stand.

Awesome. Thanks so much for the link. Based on that, I'm going to advise them to go ahead and apply. It's only $50. The worst they can say is no. But I think it's worth the gamble, especially since they have been incident free for over 20 years. Again thanks so much for the info - I have to say I love this forum. Always so helpful!!

Have they gotten rid of the nexus machines at the YYZ US pre-clearance? I actually just had my finger prints taken this weekend for global entry, so decided I would use that kiosk for the first time instead of using the nexus machine, but I didn't see any nexus machines today ( it's possible they were there, i just didn't notice - just a long LONG line of global entry kiosks. I'm glad I finally had my finger prints taken!)

And the great thing about the GE machines vs the Nexus ones is you don't have to fill out the US declaration form if you use the GE kiosk. The questions are on screen so no paper form. You have to when using the Nexus kiosks which is why I avoid them whenever possible. That, and a lot of Canadians don't realize they are allowed to use them (assuming, of course, they have had fingerprints taken). I have told many a traveller waiting in a long line for the Nexus kiosks at YVR pre-clearance that they can use the GE machines instead. They never believe me. They say they are Canadian so they MUST use the Nexus machine  Hey, better for me as I just breeze on by them.
