I am travelling late September with some extended family members (sister in law and her hubby). They do not have passports but we are crossing the border by land. My hubby and I have passports and I have a Nexus.

Anyway, my sister in law and her hubby applied for Nexus (by mail) and have not gotten their conditional approval yet. We are starting to get worried. They really do not want to spend the money for passports.

They would be going for their interviews in Halifax. We will be crossing into the US in St.Stephen/Calais ME.

Any insight or suggestions? They called and were told they have no information on their applications. They took their $50 each for the application however.

They would need their cards or passports to cross with us on vacation correct?

Thanks!

When did they apply? The application time varies, but seems to be 6-8 weeks if I'm not mistaken. Add a week maybe for mailing it.

One problem with mailing it in vs applying through GOES, I believe you can't schedule your appointment online. You need to phone in. Might not be easy to try to keep switching your appointment for an opening that's popped up. I could be wrong, but I remember reading that.

That is correct. IF, and this is a big if, they're US citizens, it is possible for them to cross with just a driver's license and birth certificate. You won't find that on anything official, and it's possible they'd get a stern talking to, but they will be allowed in.

If they're not US citizens, then it isn't going to happen.

Will my Canadian issued NEXUS card (+ GE) get me access to the SENTRI pedestrian crossing at San Ysidro (Tijuana to US)?

I've done this successfully (US citizen, but can't imagine it matters as a Nexus card is a Nexus card).

We've beaten this to death. You absolutely have to go to the office when you're updating your passport. And even then there are no guarantees. I've gone in to update my DL and years later had a CBP officer chew me out for using Nexus with expired docs :(

Unless you live in the states and get it updated at a global entry office. They use the same system.

On the US side, yes.. The Canadian side forgets things too, and I believe you can only get that done at a Canadian office as the American's wouldn't have access to it.

Tdc form for land crossing

Anyone been charged Duty when crossing via land from the USA back into Canada and filled out the TDC form for declared goods over the exemption?

Or do they just charge the HST?
Thanks in advance

I'm sure if you indicate that the product was produced outside of North America they'll tack on the appropriate duty charge. However I would also imagine that the majority of people just say that whatever they've purchased (Clothing etc) was made in North America. As long as you don't get pulled into secondary they'll never know what the country of origin was.

Interview location

Hi, I'm in week 7 of my NEXUS application approval wait but I was wondering about the interview process. I am an American citizen - can I do the whole interview at YUL in Montreal? Or will I need to schedule an interview on the American side too?

Thanks.

They have both countries at all nexus offices

That's what I had guessed but just wanted to make sure. Thanks so much!

I'm thinking about spending an afternoon in TJ as I have a free day in San Diego in early September.

Any recent reports of SENTRI pedestrian wait times entering the US at San Ysidro? If it's more than an hour I'll just try to find some Mexican food north of the border... :D

Any Nexus office has both the Canadian and US folks there to do the interviews. All of the airport offices, and I think all (or many) of the land ones on the Canadian side allow you to do the iris scan needed for air. The Nexus offices on the US side generally don't have the iris scan, so you need to get that done at an office that has it - otherwise, you can only use for land/sea until your iris capture gets done.

The Global Entry offices - all on the US side, only have US customs people there, so they can only do GE interviews, not Nexus, since Nexus requires an interview from both sides. Probably a big reason why a lot of US folks get GE only, and not Nexus (which is 50% of the cost) - because otherwise they would need to also travel to a Nexus office to be approved.

Since the Pedestrian READY Lane is only 30-45 minutes at peak times, chances are the Pedestrian SENTRI Lane will be much shorter than that.
