June 3rd 04:30 PSP and I am the second one in the line, I hand over my Nexus card, TSA agent asks what is this? I said a US Homeland security document, why do you ask I said. I never seen one, pulled out my passport and said , will this help you better, yes he said. Gave him my boarding pass, what is this he said, I said are you kidding me! He gave me that look, i gave back the same look and said in easy to understand langauge using small words.. Its a boarding pass on Air Canada stock! He said, Air Canada does not fly from here, I said it does not matter, airlines print each others boarding passess all over the world, and unlike my Nexus card i do not have a subsitute for you with this one!

.....seriously....so easy to make fun of these idiots and these guys are on the front line defending the US! :D

I had that same reaction with my NEXUS card a few years ago at PDX. Wish I there was such a thing as an iPhone back then so I could have shown him the web page of acceptable to Homeland Security ID. The first example card was the NEXUS card!

Thanks

Depends on the agent it seems. You can fill out a TDC and put it in the box, and you won't be charged. This is safest. I have also been told, as have others, that you can make a verbal declaration whether you're under or over the limit, and they'll just send you in to pay if you need to.

But yet others have been told no for verbal declarations.

Thus, what I would suggest is correct is that you fill one out, because most of the documentation suggests that's what you should do. I almost always do, though one time I tested the verbal declaration information I was given and it was no problem.

Does anyone know how to update your employment information on the GOES website? I could not find a way to do it. Do I have to go into a NEXUS office?

Thanks

You don't update it on the website - u have to do it at an office. I haven't had to update in this in a while, but bring proof with you (I.e., a biz card) to prove it. Last time I went to change it, I had run out, and they wouldn't change it without that.

I have never made a declaration under the limit.

It asks you if you answer yes to those specific questions, as long as it is no, then why bother

Unless I am wrong

So my advice is not to take the chance.

I early renewed. My card expires in July but I applied in December, finally had the interview end of May.

I was told I could keep and use my current card until I receive the new one then I must go into the office to drop off the old one.

So in that case, it all just keeps working

According to a Nexus agent at the YYZ office a couple of months ago you no longer need to fill out a Nexus declaration card coming back to Canada if you are below the limit.

What's the office you booked at ?

I think you forgot it was me that was booked into Lansdowne. :)

REPORT:
Showed up at 8:45am for a 9:00 interview. Office empty! Two jovial agents sat side-by-side, one each from USA/Canada.

Interview fast and easy. And, contrary to what I'd read here they DID HAVE IRIS SCAN! I'd been given the impression I'd have to go to a Nexus office at an airport, but nope. The Canadian "interview" was first and he did the iris scan. Mostly just questions to verify who I was, and showed documents (only drivers license and passport and letter for me). Then the American did the photo and fingerprints. Interesting that the biometric (fingerprint) portion was completely different to the Homeland Security office where I'd been scanned for a foreign visa not long ago!

The longest part of the interview was the explanations about how to use the card (most of which I knew from this forum). And then the American agent had to take a phone call from a clearly clueless Nexus user. I would easily have been out by 9 but with these, it was maybe 10 past 9 when I left.

The agents said that because they are so easy to schedule with, they have people coming from all over - Toronto, Champlain, etc, because you can book quickly and get in & out easily. (Tip!) The office seemed full by the time I left. Probably 3-5 people waiting their turn.

Not using NEXUS while waiting for a your new card post-interview, is different then using an expired card while having a pending renewal application.

Can anyone confirm that expired cards with pending renewals are ok to use?

I was told by the agent that when the card expires and you apply for renewal you can keep using the old card, and you shoudl destroy it when you get the new one (from this forum I suspect YMMV on that...).

And the American agent total me over and over and over... any time you contact them, have your ID number with you! (The goofball on the phone didn't....)

Overall a smooth experience, hardest part was the 9 week wait for approval. :)

I was told this too.. Nothing to fill out any more either way if you are under your limit.

Oh and they emphasized you cannot cross a land border in the Nexus lane unless everyone in the car has Nexus. In fact, they claimed that your Nexus card can be revoked for trying!

Yep just KEEP CHECKING! I applied mid-March, conditional approval about 9-10 weeks later. Nothing available at my preferred location until mid-August. Made an appointment for some random office by Lake Erie in July just to have something. Kept checking over the next week, then miraculously two appointments for the following week at Toronto airport opened and I grabbed one. Then some funny timing, my co-worker got approved within minutes of making my new appointment and I told her to book the adjoining appt right away so we can go together.

The strange part is when you get to the office, it's pretty slow. I guess they need to leave enough space in case they have to do more intensive interrogation but we got there an hour early and they took us right away.

Nexus card received this week...will try it out on my next trip in a couple weeks!

Can't tell where you live, but if you are willing to spend a few hours in the car... I highly recommend Lansdowne! Appointments when I went to book a bit under two weeks ago were soon and plentiful, and I have already completed my interview (see above). Plus it's a good excuse to go visit the lovely Thousand Islands area.

I guess people object to all the driving but it sure was hassle-free!
