Call to check, but I believe the current policy is that expired cards are still valid if a renewal is in progress. I know that's what they told me.
So my advice is not to take the chance. |

Appointments at Lansdowne are available starting early/mid-july, but considering that it's more than 3 hours away from my house by car versus a mere 30 minutes for Champlain I think I'll stick with my August 7 interview even tough it's another 2 months away.

Going into Canada on expired docs is, generally, not a big deal. It becomes a big deal when you try to go into the US. Once, I crossed the border w/ a re-issued NEXUS card. No one said anything at Ste. Cath, but I was apparently entering on an inactive NEXUS card. On my return to NY, I was immediately directed to the penalty box. I was ordered by CBP to step out of the car and hand the car keys to the border dragon. Another officer escorted me inside, as two more officers came to search my vehicle w/ K9s. The process of changing a card from inactive to active status took a mere couple of keystrokes; however, I was treated like a criminal throughout the entire process.

Interesting. (And not fun! So much for being a "trusted traveller", eh?!) A Canadian friend very recently went to NY state for a couple of hours and discovered after the roundtrip that his passport was expired. No one had said anything going into the U.S. or coming back into Canada. (Is this normal, or unusual?!)

We had our nexus since 07, and our old passport expired the 3rd year we had our nexus. We didn't bother applying for new passports because we weren't flying, so for the last 2 years we crossed the borders many times and were using our nexus cards (that expired April this year) that had an expired passport on file with no issues. We did applied new passports in Jan of this year before our nexus renewal and renewed our nexus cards with no problem!^

That's odd! I just booked a couple of days before my post and I could have had any weekday from June 5th through the end of the month with only about two dates greyed-out (I didn't look further into July). Maybe they released a load of approvals all at once and I was one of the first to book? (Doubtful but I guess possible!)
I wonder why they don't do interviews on fridays at Champlain? I think it would ease up the congestion a little bit considering that apart from NEXUS they seem to process a lot of FAST/EXPRES applications there too. |

It would appear so. These are the same border crossings that let you import untold amounts of alcohol from duty free. I get Labatt for $0,45/can (at Champlain. $0,80 at Queenston), which is just incredible.

Appear normal or unusual?? Still not sure there but having seen a subsequent post on expired passports are ok for cross-border ID I think you mean normal. :)

Ok and just to make this all weirder still... there is a list of Nexus offices I looked at recently (did not save the link) and most had hours Mon-Thurs only, INCLUDING the one I booked for an interview, but it let me book a Friday! (I'll certainly post back if I get there and find that was an online error on their part! I am admittedly apprehensive about it...)
If you checked on an "unofficial" website maybe you should verify the information on the CBP or the CBSA website. Here's the link for the list of NEXUS enrollment centres and their opening hours on the CBP website: http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/travel/tr...xus_enroll.xml |

It does sound like different people are getting different answers, but when I renewed mine at YYZ a few weeks ago, the US officer took my old card back and told me that I could not use NEXUS until I received my new card in the mail (which was less than two weeks later).
So my advice is not to take the chance. Can anyone confirm that expired cards with pending renewals are ok to use? |

Not using NEXUS while waiting for a your new card post-interview, is different then using an expired card while having a pending renewal application.
Can anyone confirm that expired cards with pending renewals are ok to use? Please continue to monitor your GOES account. The CBP Trusted Traveler Program has experienced an increased volume of applications which unfortunately has caused some processing delays. CBP is actively addressing the backlog and apologizes for the delay. If a renewal application is submitted prior to membership expiration, the current Trusted Traveler card will remain active until the renewal application is approved. |
Nexus need to declare
Do you need to fill out any Nexus forms when travelling back by land from US to Canada (returning home) if you had purchased goods (not alcohol or tobacco) under the limits allowed.
Example $200 worth of goods for over 48 hours. Thanks |
