I plan to do a land crossing this Saturday at one of the Niagara Falls crossings - most likely the one off of the 405... as a Nexus holder I've only used it for flying so this will be the first time for land crossing.

Do I need to do something for this, like get a sticker? Or is everything streamlined now that I just use my Nexus card (flash it at some RFID reader) and go on my merry way?

For land crossings, all you need to do is flash your Nexus card. While I've never been through the Niagara crossing, I believe this is a rule for all land crossings.

I have checked the status and they provide a so called locator number which, I believe is actually the number of the new passport. So now I am wondering if I can still use my nexus card while I'm waiting for the passport. The reason is that when a new passport is issued, the old one gets cancelled, and I would think this would flag the nexus card.

Has anyone else had any experience using the nexus card after the new passport number has been issued but before the new passport has arrived?

See my post on the last page, and Derek's right after. Then take the point you already made in your post about being flagged to make the risk much worse. Add to that point the fact that most carriers, including AC in the last few years IME, will require your passport to be shown when checking in and again at the gate (and I mean, they will often say Nexus card is not good enough).

Chances are you won't travel + will have your Nexus taken away in the process. But if you do decide to try this, by all means, do let us know how it goes.

Today at ORD, with an agent who knows me very well, I was asked to confirm that I had my passport. I had handed him my Nexus card and boarding card for the flight to YUL and he said that they are supposed to make sure that everyone has a passport, Nexus is not enough (but blamed it on his fellow Americans, not AC or Canada Customs). He took my word, of course... ;) After eight years of this weekly commute, they are a bit embarrassed having to ask me for ID at all, but they have their job to do.

I should have made it clear in my post that I am obviously not planning on any air travel while my passport renewal is being processed. I was wondering if I should not do any land border crossing until I get my new passport, since they cancel the old number when the new one is issued and this should show up in their system before I actually have the new passport so I can take it to the nexus office to get their system updated.

I don't know how soon you need an answer but I can ask at the land border next week... in fact, will do anyway and post the answer as an fyi. Too bad I didn't see all this before Monday when I spent a lot of time quizzing the (very bored) border agents on the US & Canada sides, about Nexus and other stuff.

I also thought I should have said in my prior post that for the first time ever I came alone on the CV to WI ferry and the Canada border agent had to step out and wait for me, alone... we had a laugh about it... I was on my bicycle and had been quizzing the same guy about Nexus earlier. :) I love small borders!

Actually I had asked at the nexus office and was told it's no problem, but it's still good to confirm information by asking people about their actual experience. I know i can enter the new passport info into goes, but I need the exact issue date to do that.

They just added a NEXUS lane to Queenston/Lewiston (the bridge off the 405) a few months ago. Before, you had to use the normal lanes and usually hand your card (in lieu of passport/other citizenship document) over to the border guard. With NEXUS lanes, you just use the RFID reader, which has been the procedure for years at Peace, Whirlpool and Rainbow.

Edit - The NEXUS lane on the Q/L only goes into Canada. You should use Whirlpool to go into the US

Is there Nexus on both sides or just US side? Last I passed through, on Rainbow, Nexus was on US side only

Believe it or not, the Passport office has no link to or contact with the NEXUS people. The only linkage exists at the NEXUS/GE end since the Passport people won't even look at your NEXUS card. That's why you must go to a NEXUS office with the new one to get it changed.

When I went to change my passport number, the officer taking the photocopy asked if I was going to be using NEXUS that day but I wasn't. He said the change would take a day to go through, so I could just use my card as normal in the interim. (Your old passport should have been clipped by the agent when you put in your papers at the passport office, but you can still use it for transborder purposes until you have your new one. If you mailed it in with your application, then you're in a bit of a bind since you technically should have you passport and NEXUS card with you when crossing the border.)

Interesting, I tried to enter my new passport number in GOES but could not make any changes to that field. Perhaps my file was locked for review given I had applied for renewal and was in the "provisional approval subject to interview" stage of things.

Shareholder - have you actually tried using a clipped passport for travel? I know you seem to know a lot, and post very useful info. bit I am very suspect about the ability to use a passport that has been clipped at the bottom for travel. Besides, don't they also stamp a large "canceled" in your passport if you go in to renew when they clip it. Not 100% sure, but IIRC, they did this to mine when I renewed a couple of years ago.

My NEXUS expries today.
I submitted my application on April 14 and got an e-mail today saying I'm conditionally approved subject to interview. Got to schedule my appointment and the next available date at YYZ is August 20th (more than 2 1/2 months from now). ....

I'll be transiting through YVR in a couple of weeks, so checked there. Next availability mid-July.

So I'm off to Fort Erie in two weeks to get it done there.

What a bloody waste of time. Given the demand at YYZ, you'd think they'd do something to bolster availability. Only the government bureaucracy would consider this acceptable customer service.
