It is possible you will receive your card by then. Even if you don't, you can still use your new membership. While the NEXUS kiosks require the card, the GE kiosks do not. All you need is your passport. YEG has GE kiosks.

But then it occurred to me that I had seen reference that the NEXUS folks wanted to see my car so it could be registered to the program.

Is this necessary, or is a rental car OK to get me there?

I was not asked in any manner about my vehicle during either my GE or NEXUS interviews.

Awesome!! So YEG is GE upon checkin (flying to US by air) but shouldnt it be nexus on the way back?? (arrive canada by air)

Also Just wanna make sure, I dont need to 'activate' the card or anything before flying out to start using the kiosks??

The only time you will need to use the NEXUS kiosk is when entering Canada. For all other journeys, the GE kiosk is either the preferable or only type of kiosk available.

You do not need to activate the card before using the kiosks.

According to the CBP officer who interviewed me (last July at Champlain) you can use GE anywhere, and regardless of where you are arriving from. I have only used it from YUL and YYZ into the US, but he clearly said that origin does not matter. It would work exactly the same way as from YYZ or YVR -- go through the screen instructions.

Correct. I have used GE in Miami & JFK a few times when arriving from elsewhere than Canada. Works great.

Not sure if this is the right place for this question, so mods please move to appropriate forum if not.

I am a Nexus card holder, Canadian citizen residing in the US with a green card. Up until now, I've always flown AC on overseas flights usually via YYZ, so only used Nexus when crossing the US/Canadian border and entering YYZ or YVR from an international destination. This has always worked well and without a hitch.

Later this week, I've got a trip to Japan via IAH on UA. My question is, on the return from NRT to IAH, can I use the Global Entry kiosk as a Canadian citizen and US permanent resident (green card holder)? According to the info in my GOES account, I assume I can, but I've never tried. Anyone else have experience with this, and how it works?

If I understand what you've described, you've never done the Global Entry process, just the NEXUS. Did you register your finger prints at that time? You may only be registered for NEXUS and thus not able to use the GE kiosk until you go through the GE registration/interview process.

You can try the kiosk with your passport and if you're rejected then go to a regular agent.

Not quite true. There are still several gateway airports without GE (DEN as of earlier this year) and GE does not work for land crossings, that's still NEXUS or SENTRI.

Actually, you do need to activate a Nexus card before you can use it at the Nexus kiosks. You do so on the GOES site, there is a link on the bottom of the page, toward the right.

You are correct in that it doesn't need to be activated before using the GE Kiosks - in fact, you don't even need a card at all - your info. should all be in the system, and you'll just need to scan your passport, do the fingerprints on the pad and look up at the camera (this is important - my dad did not realize this the first time, and got an X on the card and had to see secondary because they couldnt' get a picture.

GE not working for land crossings is not quite correct, either. GE members have an option (or maybe they just automatically get it, now) to receive a GE card, which I believe looks similar to a Nexus one, and they can use it for land border crossings, though into the US only.

And as for DEN, believe they do have GE now.

Correct- only used Nexus and not GE. However, there is now a note in my GOES account saying I am eligible to use GE with my permanent residence card. I haven't tried it yet, and am wondering if the GE machine would also read/require my Canadian passport.

As a side note, I tried using a GE machine in YYZ once when the nexus machine in the connecting flight line was down, and it didn't read my passport. This was about a year ago and I didn't think to try using my green card as I hadn't received the message from GOES yet.

They only want to see your car if you are registering for FAST which needs some sort of safety check. They might however ask you for ownership / registration details, so you should probably bring them.

For reference they did NOT ask me about my car at all. They did ask for my license as proof of residency.

Thanks.

Quite literally everything has changed since I filed my application (job, state of residence/address, car, etc.)--it's all different now than what I put down before. Just didn't want to cause any additional issues beyond that...

This is even more important now, as the photograph is printed on the receipt.

I'm considering signing up for a Nexus card (travel to us 3-4 times a year). Planning on travelling though YYZ and YYC on Dec 26th and 27th and thought the priority screen/customs would be helpful at this time of the year. From what I've read the approval times used to be about 3 months, but seems to be much faster now, is this correct? I already have a Canpass Private card if that would speed the approval process.

The application promises 6 weeks I think for some sort of response. Once you have a conditional approval, you'll have to schedule an interview. Canadian airports can be tough to find interview availability, so the entire process might take a while.

I believe you are required to use your green card at the GE kiosk if you have one, not your other passport. Don't believe this has always been the case, but it's been a little while.
