When I updated mine a few months back it was just an unscheduled trip into the YYZ interview office. Took 15 minutes.

So the card doesn't expire when passport expires?

Nope. It is aligned to your birthday.

US officer: Global entry office can update for NEXUS and USA
Canadian Officer: You must bring new passport in person before expiration
Different canadian officer: You can fax first page of new passport
Different canadian officer: Update in GOES, but bring new passport next time you come to Canada

I use the last method listed. Seems to satisfy the officers who say you can do it on GOES, and the others that say you need to bring it in.

No, the card doesn't expire, however, if you don't update your passport, you will be flagged in the system (at least if traveling by air), sent to secondary, and quite possibly have your Nexus taken away.

It seems that when you want to update information and can not do it on line for GOES you must go to a GE/Nexus office, I go to the one in downtown Vancouver, and try to be the first in, there seems to be no way to make an appointment to do this update, has anyone had a problem just going in and updating either downtown Vancouver or YVR itself?

So if the passport is updated in GOES will there still be a flag?

Not if you use GE, but possibly if you use NEXUS.

If your current border crossing is your first chance to visit a NEXUS office since you updated your passport, and you've updated it on GOES, I'd risk it and explain to the officer that you're going to update it as soon as you've cleared Customs. And then, go do it.

travel with nexus on land with expired passport will not be flagged. I had traveled with nexus with an expired passport for 2 years with no issues crossing the border and renewal.

I'm assuming from your post that your passport expired and you did not bother to renew it for 2 years. If that's the case, you would have had nothing to "update" with Nexus until you actually obtained a new passport. I don't believe the expiry of your passport creates a problem; rather the obtaining of a new passport and not updating this information with Nexus would create a problem.

Agreed. So basically what they are saying if you get a new one you need to update it with a NEXUS officer once you get it. But if you are someone from the states, like me, you can't actually update it in person until you already come into Canada, meaning really you have no choice but to update on GOES, then try to use your NEXUS card to get in with information updated on GOES and hoping canadian officials are aware of the new information, then once you get in Canada, go to a NEXUS office and update in person. Same goes for driver's license. Very confusing, but I guess they aren't expecting anyone from the States to have a NEXUS in the first place. I guess an alternative is to simply update somewhere like Seattle, but when I called Seattle office, they said simply update on GOES.

Sorry if this has been answered previously - tried searching.

If I return to Canada thru Nexus lane at, say, Whirlpool bridge, from a day trip (ie, <24 hours), and I have goods with me for a total of ~$150 - what happens when I make a verbal declaration? is there a chance that they can wave me through, which is a normal practice at the regular crossings? Or if they don't, do they send you to pay duty (where?) Anyone can share their experience?

I went through Whirlpool for the first time a few weeks back. Was only in the US for 6-8 hours and had spent about $250. Crossed back in to Canada with no TDC. Did a verbal declaration and the guy just waved me through.

One thing I've wondered though, as I'm sure someone must have tried this by now, but it seems too easy to work. What happens if you pull up, and put a blank declaration card in the box. I assume they should just wave you through at that point because you made your declaration on the paper (or so they'd think). I assume someone goes out to the box later on to get the papers. They likely wouldn't know who left the blank one, right? I would never actually do this, but something I thought about.

If you are chosen for a search they will go get your card from the box. And you would promptly lose your Nexus on the spot.

Did not know they pull the card out immediately.

As I said before, I would never actually try to do this. Just something I wondered about. My NEXUS privileges are too valuable :)

For the US, I'm pretty sure there wouldn't be, as GOES is a US system. For Canada, I'd think there would be.

I'm probably a pretty bad example to try - as a dual Canadian-US citizen, I'm pretty certain (I think the office told me this a while ago) that as long as I have at least one valid passport, I'm good.
