Do the "boarding card and blue form" checkers understand that you can go to a global entry kiosk without a blue form?

Coming back to Canada in the afternoon around 4:00PM I was a little shocked to find that the CBP decided to stop ALL NORTHBOUND TRAFFIC for some kind of inspection by a group of 10 CBP officers circling your car and looking in it through the windows.
I think what someone else said makes some sense though about a possible kidnapping. I wonder if they have an amber alert near a border crossing the border agents keep an eye out for these things.

There was 2 lanes open at the CBSA checkpoint with about 15 minutes of wait in each. NEXUS was empty, I presented my card to the reader waited for three seconds as indicated by the CBSA agent during the interview and proceeded to the booth. I was a little shocked to find the nobody was in the booth so I waited hoping somebody would come shortly until I heard somebody say "Bonjour, Hi" from somewhere. Just then I realized that the inspection was done from the passenger side of the vehicle, I don't know if it's just like that in lower colume periods but I think it would be good to maybe think of putting a sign in the window of the NEXUS booth saying that the agent is in the booth on the right of the car.

That's great! So is it just a priority line for Nexus cardholders where you have to show your Nexus machine receipt and declaration card?

No. it is past the pre-clearance officer (who generally takes your card). He refers you to secondary screening - there they have set up a Nexus priority secondary screening line. woop for up over (as opposed to down under)
Maybe it has always been the rule but was awkward to enforce as it would certainly upset the others in line?.......maybe this is a solution to the issue and will be rolled out everywhere? COOL |

Did GE thru YYZ just now.
No fatal X. Customs was dead. As I whipped to The exit officer another officer exiting a room said Hello, took my GE receipt and took me to secondary. Gulp. WT?? Waiting room was semi full but he just walked me to a empty desk. Asked for my nexus card. Asked where, why, when I'm back. Anything to declare. Where I live. Did a 10 second examination of my carry on. That was it. Errrmmm CBP bored today? As I exited CBP I saw a room full of officers bored talking afront of a bank of monitors. Lol |

Land Border Nexus Question
About to use my Nexus for the first time tomorrow crossing from USA to Canada. Not sure if I will use a crossing that has a dedicated lane or not, as I have many choices (Burlington VT twd Toronto...).
Vehicle question: They asked in my interview if I wanted to register a vehicle, and I did not since I didn't have one (a friend was driving me). I still don't have my own vehicle, but am driving a family member's car. I went in to register it via GOES and got this message when I clicked "add vehicle"... "If the applicant plans to travel from Mexico to the U.S. in a vehicle, the vehicle must be registered in order to use the expedited lanes. If the vehicle is already actively registered, you should not register it again. If you choose to register a vehicle, the applicant must bring the vehicle to be inspected at the time of the interview. Only the enrollment centers at the Southern border perform vehicle inspections so the applicant will be limited to making an appointment at one of the Southern Border enrollment centers." Seems not to do with me...? Then it says I have to pay $42 extra to add the vehicle! No one in the interview said this. And I am pretty sure I can cross without registering it, but maybe not in a Nexus lane?? The literature has no details about this, so any comments are appreciated! Secondary query: I also have read all the literature and it seems if I have nothing to declare outside my personal exemption, I do not need to fill out any forms at all?? Thanks in advance to all the land crossers for info... :) |
bostonoski,
I believe the vehicle registration is ONLY for travelling between Mexico and the United States. Not used for NEXUS at all. Are you a US resident? Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the declaration card is only used for Canadian residents returning to Canada. In either case, you don't need to fill it out as you can declare verbally now. Enjoy the use of your NEXUS card tomorrow! I got to use mine the first time a few weeks ago and it saved me a huge amount of time :) |
I have used rental cars in NEXUS lanes (I rarely get my car from Saskatchewan to "civilized" Canada :) ). No problem.

That's what I thought maybe that pop-up message was for - the vehicle thing for Mexico... wonder why they asked me about adding a vehicle at my interview though. Yup, US resident, so I think no card to fill. But sadly I think still only one bottle of wine can go with me (I have two for gifts...). |

Keep on checking for interviews daily. A friend of mine got her conditional approval as well. This morning, she booked an appt at YYZ for Jan 4. Around lunch time, an appt for this Saturday became available which she snatched. :)
The interview was a bit different than I expected. I walked in and thought I was just checking in, then after a few questions realized it was the actual interview. The CBP woman was very friendly and the whole process was less than a half hour. I had the same issue as Dawn Retel--since getting married I have changed my name on everything except my passport, and I applied for NEXUS using my married name. When I interviewed, I pointed out that my passport is in my maiden name and they said it was no problem, I can just update NEXUS whenever/if my passport is changed. I applied only for NEXUS but when I got there, she said I might as well just go ahead and add GE. No fee, no additional form, just a few extra brochures plus the sticker. And with GE added, any updates (new passport and whatnot) can be done at the GE center at ORD instead of having to go to a NEXUS center. I also thought I had read something about needing to enroll vehicles...I asked and that's no longer the case. As mentioned above, rental cars are fine. Altogether, a very smooth process, under a month total. Oh, there's a fun little video that they have you watch when you enroll explaining how it works and regulations, and the video shows multiple times people getting oranges taken away. Such hatred of oranges, haha. |
