This makes sense. Thanks for the tip on that. It would have completely thrown me off when I tried to use it.

You seem knowledgable on this, so I want to ask one more question. During my interview, I asked the guy about having multiple people in the car and what to do at a land crossing. He said to just hold all the cards up to the reader at the same time. Do you have to hold them fanned out, or can you hold them all stacked? I'll likely only ever have 2 cards max, but don't want to screw up and have the customs agent get angry.

We've always fanned ours out so I can't vouch if a stack would work. IIRC, there is a counter you can see that shows the number of cards that have been recognized. If it doesn't match the number of cards you've held up, just hold them up one by one until it does.

In Highgate Springs and Champlain they have those counters in all the lanes. It's right next to the "Present you card here" reader (about 10 metres before the inspection booth) and it shows how many cards have been recognized. According to what I read somewhere it does a pretty good job at recognizing multiple cards and you can present them in front of the reader pretty much any way you want. I'll be able to give more details soon after I actually use a NEXUS line for the first time... I have been waiting 4 months for this day... 21 hours to go before my interview !

Ohhhh I did not know about the counter. Having never been through the NEXUS lane :P

jmbjmbjmb, why the long wait?! Did you really apply back in April-ish? I'll be giving the NEXUS land crossing a try in 2 weeks. We were going to go to Buffalo for the day this weekend, but my wife didn't get her card on Friday like we had hoped (took exactly 1 week for my card to arrive).

I applied at the beginning of april and was conditionally approved in about 9 weeks. We simply chose the first day where 3 interview slots were available in early morning since we all wanted to be interviewed at the same time. We could have been interviewed separately before because of cancellations but we found it easier just to wait for the date we first booked.

Got an appointment for 8/29 at YVR. Crazy how things work out.

Just to answer my own question - just mentioned GE to the woman checking passports this AM and she waived me through, no issues.

On the weekend at YYZ, I did this. Waived through by lady at front of US hall without blue form, but problem was that no GE machines were working, only 2 Nexus Machines. Not sure what was going on but some technician was working on the GE machines (and there was a bank of a number of machines that were turned around and looked like they were getting ready to install them).

So I used Nexus, got up to the customs counter and was asked for my blue form . Tried to bluff through saying I wanted to use GE machine, but it did not work. Ended up having to fill in the blue form anyway (and it was in French! )

I think next time I will just fill it in anyway, GE Machine or not.

When I signed up for GE in 2009, the CBP officer that did my interview suggested that I always carry a pre-filled customs form. In case the GE machines are down, all I have to fill in is the date, my flight info, and answer no the various questions.

Would save time for the future :)

Sounds like a plan! Thanks for the tip.

Found a cancellation and was able to get in to YYC today for the interview. Watched the 7 minute video, had the basic questions (and some confused looks when asked about my employer and what we do), and then a few smiles and things were done.

Had my 2 1/2 year old daughter with me, seemed to make the agents super relaxed.

Received actual card in the mail today August 7, 2012. (51 days)

Video - was a 9 minute video on the nexus program, aimed at stopping alot of the usual questions. First thing they had me do was watch the video, then go and answer the questions from the officers.

I think I have read this here somewhere? I have a Conditional Approval Renewal from a few weeks back. My appointment is Sept.12 but I a few US travels before hand. So my question is can I use Nexus with Conditional Approval until I get my new card in Sept?

No, you can't.

I'm a bit of a NEXUS noob, but if someone has a conditional renewal and still has a valid card, why wouldn't they be able to still use NEXUS?

If the card is valid should be ok. I assume maybe they are asking cause his/her card has expired.
