At the westernmost Peace Arch crossing, this is a frequent observation on weekends. Nexus lane southbound is often as long as the regular lines (judging by non-Nexus cars next to us). Backed up to the CBSA post at times. Per-car processing times isn't appreciably faster.

When I called a Canadian Nexus office they were adament that I needed to bring in the passport. At YYZ, they updated in the Canadian system and then make a copy and provide it to the US and they update it separately in their system.

I went through this procedure at YUL, as well. Curiously, the information in GOES doesn't seem to have been updated, but the Canadian folks insist "everything's fine". We'll see what happens are renewal time!

New digital sign at Peace Arch (Blaine, WA) northbound:

"$124 fine for blocking NEXUS lane".

Excellent!

Finally. Agree. Nice to see!

It all depends who is in the booth. We go through weekly and sometimes we are waved through, sometimes just asked where we are going and sometimes the dude goes through the regular 20 questions drill and I have to bite my tongue. My favourite question is when they ask me to roll down the rear window after asking me if we are the only 2 in the car and I have answered yes. Clearly the agent on that occurance
didn't believe me. So much for being a trusted traveller! A few times Nexus has been backed up past the duty free and there has been no line in the regular lanes so we have gone thru it instead. Still use Nexus cards as I'D and have been waved thru. Once the agent asked why we were not using the Nexus lane and I said it was backed up too far. He rolled his eyes (as if he knew who was on duty in that booth) and said, "Go ahead."

Do you have tinted rear windows? Did he also check the trunk? If not then that's kind of a miss.

No special tint (ie. Stock) but they are darker than the front one's. And, no, the trunk or back of the SUV have never been inspected. Agree, doesn't really make sense!

When I was a kid and rode in the back seat we came to a toll bridge that charged by the number of occupants. So I decided to lay down on the floor and see if the toll collector counted me. He didn't. The agent in the NEXUS lane may have had a similar misspent youth or might be a former toll collector that has been promoted.

Same experience here - some people clearly "trust" trusted travelers more than others. I not only got roll down the window, but "please pull over so we can have a look in the car."

The best practice is to roll down the windows, take off your sunglasses and turn off the ignition of the vehicle before even speaking with the agent. Do everything you can to make their job easier.

You're right, and it's so unpredictable. I just got grilled with the 20 questions treatment entering the US at YUL. There have been times when the agent hasn't even said a word. I guess they have a lot of discretion as to how to treat folks.

Which completely defeats the purpose of Trusted Traveller. I understand Sporadic checks, as it wouldn't take much to become a trust traveler and then become a threat, but the inconsistencies is bizarro.

If it was consistent, it would be easy to beat the system.

First time applicant. How hard is it to report change of passport docs with Nexus and GE? We have an interview beginning of April for my family with my current passport on the application, my passport expires in mid November and I was thinking of applying for a new one soon before my intl trip end of April.

Should I apply for a new one before or after our interview? Which would be less of a hassle with both customs? I thought maybe they'd want only the docs on the original application. Is changing docs info a matter of filling out an online form? Or I need to schedule an interview again with the new passport? Which is in YEG over 3 months to get one?

Thx

My passport expired between my initial application and my interview, so I got a new one before the interview. At the interview they didnt care that the application one and the one I now had were different, just that I had a current passport. I would only apply for a new one if you know it will be there for the interview. (I had to pay to expedite mine as I had less than 2 weeks between returning from a trip and the interview date).

+1, except for turning off the ignition part. Also, take off your hat. Just before I pull in, I take off my hat and sunglasses and roll down windows. Makes it go faster IMO.
