I applied for NEXUS before the online (GOES) system was an option.
It seems that many here are logging into their goes account to see if they are eligible for GE and what step they have to complete. How does a NEXUS member without a GOES account join GE? Many thanks! |

Tried to apply on line, but the GE link won't light up. So I call the US-CBP the next day and get a different agent who says the Nexus-GE data have been merged so I don't need to apply for anything. I just need to show up and get fingerprinted (as stated on my GOES homepage) and get a sticker put in the back of my passport. Appointment made for the weekend. Show up for my appointment, and am told that I do not have an appointment today, or any day for that matter. The agent that gave me my appointment is away for a week. With great reluctance, the US-CBP agent agrees to process me. Apparently I am the first to be done at Halifax. The cheat sheets they use don't work. Second US agent called down to help out...he's more adventurous and tries clicking other links to process me on the computer...computer crashes....things get going and over 40 minutes or so he manages to click enough links on his machine to grant me "conditional approval" for GE (new picture taken, finger prints taken). Alas, he has no stickers....they are upstairs on the "US side" and I am being processed as a Canadian on the Canadian side. He calls up to have someone bring down a sticker. That someone tells him stickers are no longer needed. Having a Nexus card is enough. No sticker for me! I'll try GE next month returning from Mexico via USA. I'm not optimistic that things will go "without a hitch" for sure! |
Two questions:
1) How do I get a GOES account? (link) 2) Is NEXUS useful for arrivals from non-US international origins, e.g. Europe? |

Last October I took Porter to Boston and got stuck behind several planeloads of European arrivals at CBP. No preclearance at YTZ (but coming soon?) and no Nexus at BOS
So I was thrilled to become GE eligible but when I called the YYZ Nexus office I was told to book a fingerprinting appointment on GOES. Went on GOES and can't apply for GE - called GOES support and was told that I don't have to apply - just to show up at YYZ. Information mismatch, so before I head out to Pearson, has anyone done this as a walk-in?

You can easily activate a GOES account as a Nexus member, even if you didn't originally apply through it. I did this last month. Just needed my Nexus number and other verification information.
While looking at the 4 different accounts I really get the sense that none of the officials using the database (or NEXUS in general) have a clue what they are doing. For example: I have 2 passports listed under update documents section. It seems that when I went in person to provide my new passport info they didn't delete the old one they just added a second one. In my wife's account they deleted the old passport and simply have the new one listed. In my son's update documents section they only have listed his passport that expired in 2009! I find this shocking as I went in person to update at the appropriate time and we have used the NEXUS lane while driving and at the airport probably 10+ times with him since then. You would figure that at some point the system should have issued an alert that the information was out of date. Has anyone gone to the YUL NEXUS office to do the fingerprinting required for GE? Do I need an appointment for this or is this a walk-in service? |

My understanding is that the cards actually end up with StatsCanada and are used to provide import/export stats and other travel-related data.

I stopped in YEG NEXUS office on Fri afternoon before catching my flight. No appointment. No problem. CPB checked to make sure my NEXUS account was linked properly to GE and then put a sticker on the inside back page of my passport. I think it was the first he had done. He asked me about GE and what I knew about it since he didn't know much about it except to tell me that it didn't use the NEXUS booths.

Thanks! I created the needed account in minutes.

All is good, except my old ON Drivers license is also still listed. Even if I was still using it, GOES had an expiry date that was wrong - about 2 years after when it would have expired. |
I think one important thing to keep in mind is that NEXUS members are NOT being given Global Entry membership or being invited to apply for GE. Global Entry kiosks are now really Global Entry/NEXUS kiosks. The sticker is merely to let the security personnel at GE airports know that we can use the GE kiosks, but we are not really GE members and don't need to be.

Have any Nexus users on this forum been successful in using the Global Entry kiosks? I tried doing so the other day at Newark Airport and the kiosk wouldn't accept my passport. I then spoke to officers at the Global Entry Enrollment Center and they advised that there's currently no activation for Nexus users with Global Entry because the programs have yet to be linked. They also told me that 5 other Nexus users had come in that day asking the same question.

I just finished my NEXUS interview at YEG, and the CBP agent mentioned that I could have used the NEXUS kiosk with my passport.. Is this something that I could have done, or do I just need to wait for my NEXUS card?

Ok, while this is not GE related, it is interesting:
We were driving back form the US on the I-5 and the overhead notice board showing wait times said there was only a 5 minute wait at both Peace Arch and the Truck Crossing. We have Nexus so don't usually pay much attention but we both commented on how short the regular line-up was for a Sunday afternoon. We pulled over into the Nexus lane as soon as it opened up (about 3/4 mile from the border) and then just ahead we could see flashing lights. The US side had people corralled into one lane (from 4) and were doing 'spot' checks of all vehicles leaving the US. We pulled up as far as we could and then merged into the regular (now single) lane. There was a Honda Civic in front of us and a pick-up truck in front of the Honda. The pick-up had 4 officers circulating around it and one of the guys had a mirror and was looking under it. They held the vehicle for a couple of minutes and let it go. The Honda in front of us was waived through as were we. Of course, when we got to the CAN side, there were no line-ups! That would explain why the wait sign said only 5 minutes. |
