Yes, or so I was told when I asked one time. Whether that's accurate or not, well, you'd have to look it up. At any rate you'd have to declare it becuase you're going to leave it there.

A few weeks ago when applying for my replacement Nexus card I was advised that the TDC books are being replaced with downloadable online forms.

http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publicati...s/e601-eng.pdf

I was also told that it is not a requirement to use these forms when using a Nexus lane by land, and that one can instead report to an officer with their declaration. Now I haven't seen any reference to this on FT, but I found this statement on the Nexus page.

http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/travel-vo...tions-eng.html

BY LAND: Each NEXUS, Free and Secure Trade (FAST) or Commercial Driver Registration Program (CDRP) member entering Canada at a land border crossing may complete a traveller declaration card (TDC) to report goods that have been purchased, acquired or received while outside Canada.

If true, it is a definate improvement of the Nexus program. If you are over your permitted allowance by completing the TDC you are forced to pay duties and taxes on your overage, while at the same time other drivers in regular lanes reporting to an officer are usually waved through with the same excess amount.

BTW I was extremely lucky to make an appointment the following day. I assume that another booking had just canceled.

I have recently moved and I am going to Canada from the US. I can't find my Nexus card anywhere. Since I'll be in Toronto, is it possible to stop in and get a new card or do I have to have an appointment? I also need to change my address with them since I've moved but it's not the same address that I'm moving to as I haven't changed my DL.

I also can't log in as I keep getting the error that I'm using an invalid username password or security certificate. I even had the system resend my password. Anyone else have the same problem?

I just tried to use my Nexus card for the first time on a trip and it was kind of disappointing.

Things started off well, the TSA ID checker in SEA accepted the ID without question and let me through.

On my return, I flew AUS-IAH-YVR and had a bunch of issues. When checking in at AUS, they agents working there had never heard of NEXUS and insisted that I use my passport to avoid a long phone call with IAH since they were short staffed. I was running late for my flight so I complied with the request. When trying to go through security at AUS, the ID checker would not accept my NEXUS card, but he did apologize saying that he had heard of it, but they were not trained to accept it.

In IAH, they did a doc check before boarding the flight, but it seems that none of the GAs were familiar with NEXUS. They seemed to be confusing it with global entry judging by what they were saying to me. In the end they insisted as well that I needed to show them my passport instead of the NEXUS card.

Luckily for me, YVR was familiar with NEXUS and once I figured out how to use the retina scanners it went well. :p

You're going to learn, like I did, that few airports on U.S. soil (save for Buffalo, maybe Detroit and Seattle), know about NEXUS.

The hit/miss ratio with the TSA is a little better, but places like Austin and Houston....forget it.

Some folks in the Travel Safety/Security forum say they carry a printed out copy from the TSA's webpage on acceptable ID (if I remember correctly, the NEXUS card is third from the top).

If you want to follow things up, next time, note the screener's name, ask for a supervisor, not his/her name if rejected there, then write the TSA's Federal Security Director at the individual airport with the incident.

If you are flying, you need to show your passport to the check-in agent and for boarding the flight. NEXUS alone is not enough for travel by air, you need your passport with you as well.

TSA is a different matter, a NEXUS ID should suffice for their ID checks.

"Should suffice" but not universally accepted in US airports, generally the more south you go the worse it is.

I have also had problems with Ontario Drivers Licence on a US domestic flight.

+1.... AC check in/gate agent and TSA @ EWR did not recgonize my NEXUS card. Thank god I carry passport as a backup.

As for TDC....I hear the same statement that you could declare verbally. However, I do not see that in writing hence remain using regular lanes if I need to declare anything in excess of value.

Depending how long you've been out and how much in excess, customs officers at their discretion can tax you or wave you through.

I was told a very different thing. My interviewing officer at the YVR centre said that if I had goods to declare and wanted to use the nexus lane to return to Canada, I MUST use the TDC. He also said that I could choose not to fill out a TDC and make an oral declaration, but that it must be done through the regular lanes. I would be interested to see an actual written rule about this.

I had the unfortunate experience of forgetting to complete a TDC for a few dollars of goods (under the exemption allowance) I was bringing back goods to Canada via Niagara Falls

I was told that I had to fill out a TDC form. The fact that I didn't volunteer this information at the border before the officer ask me a question lead me to secondary inspection.

They gave me a difficult time at secondary inspection since I was in violation of the Nexus rules -- telling me that I should declare everything -- even a stick of gum.

I left the border with my confidence shaken, but my Nexus intact.

Coincidentally, a few days light travelling out of Pearson, I was pulled into secondary inspection. Either that's random, or I my file was flagged...

If I'm buying any goods in the USA, I'm filling out a TDC or going to a regular lane.

When I had my interview, the Canadian officer offered me the TDC booklet but she said it is being phased out (I was interviewed summer 2010). She also informed me that it is quite tedious to fill out and that I can fill out a regular form and submit that when crossing into Canada. I have no idea if the TDC is for driving across the border or also for flying. I see on the government website that the TDC is being phased out and you have to complete it online now when travelling.

This past Friday I flew home to Canada and completed a regular customs form handed out on the airplane. When I arrived into YYC the Nexus machines were blocked off and had signs indicating 'Out of Order'... so I walked up to the booth and the officer asked if I was Nexus and I said yes as I handed my passport. She said - no no - just your Nexus card. She looked at it, looked at me, took my declaration card and wrote the top secret code they all write on it and off I went. I picked up my luggage that was the first one off and handed my card to the officer going out the door. I was off the plane, through customs, picked up bag and into the YYC airport lounge in less than 6 minutes :)

TDC is only for land crossings.

Wrong. There are TDC dropboxes at airport NEXUS kiosks. The difference is TDC is mandatory at land crossings even if within exemption, but not at air since for air you declare at the Kiosk if you are over and then can drop the TDC or go to the cashier.

OMG, used nexus for the first time in YYZ arriving from HKG and sooo awesome! Was through in less than 3mins. No checked luggage so I just kept walking to the lounge where I then had a shower. effing awesome!

NEXUS Land (by car) is still an issue:

Back in the mid 2000s, we were issued TDCs to use. If we were to use NEXUS with declarable goods, we fill a TDC and submit into a black box outside the customs booth. If we wanted to give a verbal declaration, we had to use regular lanes.

When i renewed by NEXUS in the late 2000s, I was told we can do both TDC or verbal at the customs booth. However, there isn't a written statement on NEXUS Guide Book and website regarding this verbal declaration on NEXUS lanes.

As such, I still use the old method of declaring through regular lanes. Having said that, if you use the NEXUS lane and verbally declare your items, I think they will still accept it, afterall you are being truthful.
