Where did I say he shouldn't fill out a TDC? The context was using the regular lanes to be waved through without paying tax owed.

If you're talking about my case of going through the regular lane, I realize I could have gone through the Nexus lane and wouldn't have been charged, had I had a TDC. However, since the land crossing was an exception for me (its probably the first time I've crossed by land in about 2 or 3 years), I almost always use Nexus at the airport - I didn't have TDC's to deposit. I know I could have printed one out online, but also knew a middle of the afternoon crossing on a regular Wed. probably wasn't going to mean a line to come back, anyway.

Sure, I wasn't criticizing your choice of lane, just reminding us all that sometimes even the TDC won't cost anything. :)

Especially if your "groceries" contain fruits and vegetables. I have heard of at least 2 cases of folks getting busted for a single apple or banana.

It's more critical going southbound. I think you can bring some fruit and veg north if you declare them (but not in the Nexus lane), especially stuff that doesn't/can't grow in Canada (Ag Can/CFIA assumes any pests won't survive the winter). I generally never bring back any fruit or veg in either lane.

I always try not to bring fruit/veggies across the border in any direction. But according to a US officer at the land border in Port Huron about a year ago or so, all fruits need to be declared, but the only fruit that the US won't ever accept 100% of the time is citrus fruits (even if they originated in the US). All other fruits are looked at by the agriculture inspector on duty, and assessed whether they can be brought in, with country of origin being one of the criteria used. Whether you can use the nexus lane or not while making a fruit declaration is something I do not know about.

I'm also interested on where people are getting the restriction on food in the Nexus lane from. The Nexus Member Guide doesn't state that, and certainly coming into Canada the TDC even lists "Fresh or frozen fruit or vegetables" under Category 3. On the US side, in the guide it just says that as long as everything is for personal use you make an oral declaration.

There's a Nexus office at the Central Avenue exit of the QEW in Fort Erie and on the US side of the Whirlpool Bridge. Either is quick and easy on your way to BUF. BTW from Fort Erie use the Peace Bridge to I-190 South and exit at Elm Street, which becomes NY 33 and goes straight to BUF. As for Global Entry, it's a notation on the record of a US passport holder, not on a Nexus account, so it's unlikely to change.

Presupposes one is driving a car. I do the MegaBus to BUF so am unable to get to the Ft. Erie office. Anyhow, managed to get up to YYZ on Friday and got it done in about 2-minutes though don't see why I couldn't have just faxed a copy of the page to the office since all the agent did was take a photocopy of my new passport!

Maybe I was not clear in my comment.

No fruits or vegetables IN the Nexus lane (either way) unless you declare them. 90%+ guarantee of secondary check.

The westernmost crossings issued such guidelines (which were reportedly misleading). Not sure if they still do.

How long does it take to get an appointment after applying online? Specifically, I am hoping to get it done at SEA. Thanks.

It was about 2-ish weeks out when I did it in September.

Keep in mind that it's done at Boeing Field, not SEA TAC.

Two weeks sounds good. The fact that it is not at SEA is not good. I did not even realize - thanks for bringing that up.

Yup. If you're like me and had to fly in to do it, you'll need a rental car to get to Boeing Field. There's no public transit service there.

Or you could fly your own plane there.

Convenience? Bah Humbug!

You can always visit the "Museum of Flight" and make a day of it. I think you can buy the "if it ain't Boeing, I ain't going" luggage tags there.

If I sell something on ebay, is that considered a commercial good if I cross the border to ship it?
