I think they just do it on a random basis. YYZ CBP staff meeting. "Oh, and today folks, we're going to check for Nexus cards." Result: Lots of big beefy guys with attitude standing just beyond the Nexus terminals. It happens some days. It doesn't happen other days.

I believe it's more commonly known as "layered security."

Nope. Did a YYC-LAX-LAS-YVR-HKG-YVR-YYC MR in September:

Officer after the machines in YYC:
CBP: Where are you going in the US?
Me: The LA and Vegas airports enroute to Hong Kong.
CBP: That sounds like a terrible routing. Enjoy your flight.

Coming back into Canada (from the US and HK) I just walked on through, no need to talk to anyone.

Thanks - Who is this "officer after the machines" you speak of? Why did you have to speak to someone? Was it just the person collecting people's customs forms?

On your way to the US from YYC (and some others, I've been made to do it in YOW), you use the machines, then line up for a CBP officer in a normal booth, who you give your card (from the machine) to and answer their questions. Luckily, the booth only does Nexus so it normally has max 1 person in it.

Well I'm happy to say that I finally used my shiney new NEXUS card today at YYZ. Felt great skipping what others here in the lounge are calling "a lineup that lasted more than 1 hour". :)

Interestingly, I kept my card in the foil packet that it came in. After all, why not "protect [my] card's sensitive electronics - and [my] privacy." But the machine read my card right through the packet. So much for protection eh? ;)

"When correctly used, condomsfoil packets are effective 97% of the time. Only abstinenceleaving your card at home is 100% effective."

...The machines pull up your profile solely based on your iris scan, they don't have an rfid reader.

t seems, to me at least, at YYZ T1 US Pre-Clearance they've stepped up making sure you're carrying your NEXUS card with you when you use the NEXUS kiosks. I've always had my NEXUS card in my hand, but the past few weeks they have actually asked to see it before stamping my boarding pass.
this has happened the last few times, F'in annoying if you ask me.

What machine? The kiosk scanned your eyes, not your card. RF readers are at land crossings only.

Why? It's in the terms and conditions that you must carry it with you, and they can't enforce that rule any other way than by asking you to show it to them. It really isn't a huge burden.

Some people simply feel entitled since they are a member of a club. In this case, perhaps that Nexus is a get into the US/Canada for free card, i.e. without any other checks once the background check has cleared and membership granted. This is clearly not the case, and Nexus isn't represented as such.

There's a difference between mentioning that producing the card is annoying versus having a belief that you should not have to.

I do not believe the person who said it was annoying was saying he/she should not have to.

Two passports registered - both required for travel?

I am a dual Canadian and US citizen and have both passports registered with my NEXUS card. My card lists "CAN" under the citizenship box on my NEXUS card. I live in Canada.

I am NOT rehashing the often asked question "do you need your passport with your NEXUS card" that is asked here so often. My question relates to those that have passports for both countries:

1. Am I required to carry BOTH passports with me when driving across the border? I called a NEXUS agent and he said "no, that's overkill", but is that the experience with the posters to this forum?

2. If I get a US passport card, is that sufficient to have with me when driving accross the border from Canada into the US (for the purpose of backup immigration status to the NEXUS card)?

3. Must passport cards be registered with NEXUS? Can they be?

Thank you!

The US requires you to enter the USA as an American Citizen. Since you have your US passport on file with Nexus, that requirement has been met.

Your Nexus card is sufficient for land border crossings. There is no need to carry a passport.

As a datapoint... I applied for GE via GOES after having been approved for NEXUS and I got approval in a few hours. ^^^^^ Should I expect something in the mail for my passport? If not, should I go to SFO and get something?

I am generally impressed with the GOES system.

I have a NEXUS card, but no iris scans on file.
