They never really asked me any questions, the Canadian Border services guy just looked at my paperwork, took the pictures of my eyes and then showed me the machine. The American CBP agent, asked me why I applied and that was it. Took my picture and then all my fingerprints and I was out. I arrived about 20 mins early, they took me right away.

FYI... my interview at Ft. Erie lasted a full hour. Most of it was spent waiting as some of the applicants seemed to have been having a really hard time with the Iris scans. The agents for both sides were extremely pleasant... got a chance to chat. Quite positive. Got approved and now waiting for the card. But, I'm glad I gave myself that full hour before I needed to cross the border.

If you're going to be applying for a visa, you cannot use Nexus to enter the US -- you need to go through the normal immigration line, and they will then redirect you to the secondary so you can apply for it.

Thanks. I was hoping to hear I can access the crew line, or have some option for a faster process.

Maybe you could ask to use the crew line -- but when I last went for my TN, they turned back two people who had entered with Nexus, so I don't recommend trying that particular option.

It seems, to me at least, at YYZ T1 US Pre-Clearance they've stepped up making sure you're carrying your NEXUS card with you when you use the NEXUS kiosks. I've always had my NEXUS card in my hand, but the past few weeks they have actually asked to see it before stamping my boarding pass.

I ended up asking the sorter at the entry to US customs. He told me to use nexus and then go to secondary, which I did. In secondary, they disagreed with his instructions, but were still able to process my documents and give me an I-94 with a J-1 stamp, so all went well.

Okay, I made the jump and applied for NEXUS. I had to fly up from SFO to SEA to do the interviews, but all went well and I was approved around 2 hours later ^. My NEXUS card appears to expire on my birthday after 5 years. That is, somewhere between 5 and 6 years from the date of interview. If you're near your birthdate, it may be to your advantage to apply shortly after your birthday so you can eek out almost an extra year for your $50.

For those of you that applied for Global Entry after getting approved for NEXUS, when did it expire? Was it coterminous with your NEXUS expiration date or was it from the date you applied? Did you also get (5 years + time to next birthday), or was it a straight 5 years from approval or application?

I won't need GE for a few months, so if it's calculated from the date applied/approved, I figure I might as well wait a bit before applying for it.

If you already have Nexus and then apply for GE, your GE will be free and will expire on the same date as your Nexus membership. You are automatically approved and have the fee waived based on your Nexus membership credentials, and so when your Nexus privileges expire, so would your GE ones.

They were pretty lax today. No need to show Nexus card.

IME, I remember this happening on and off a while back, maybe about 1-3 years ago or so. Haven't been asked for my Nexus card for a long time at YYZ.

There was a time, earlier this year I believe, where showing the NEXUS card in Toronto was a requirement, complete with slapdash pieces of paper posted at the kiosks remind you of that.

Haven't had to show the NEXUS card in awhile there.

Went through Vancouver pre-clearance late last week, and there was a guy asking for NEXUS cards right at the kiosks. Actually, kind of hiding behind the cubicle/station nearest the kiosks. He was asking everyone for the card.

I think they just do it on a random basis.

YYZ CBP staff meeting. "Oh, and today folks, we're going to check for Nexus cards."

Result: Lots of big beefy guys with attitude standing just beyond the Nexus terminals.

It happens some days. It doesn't happen other days.

Agreed. Simply a YMMV thing.

Anyone have issues using Nexus while MRing?

Nope. Did a YYC-LAX-LAS-YVR-HKG-YVR-YYC MR in September:

Officer after the machines in YYC:
CBP: Where are you going in the US?
Me: The LA and Vegas airports enroute to Hong Kong.
CBP: That sounds like a terrible routing. Enjoy your flight.

Coming back into Canada (from the US and HK) I just walked on through, no need to talk to anyone.

Wow. I didn't know that you needed to be a certain size to enforce the T&C of NEXUS membership.
