I just had my Nexus interview this morning in Ottawa. I was in and out in 10 minutes. They never really asked me any questions, the Canadian Border services guy just looked at my paperwork, took the pictures of my eyes and then showed me the machine. The American CBP agent, asked me why I applied and that was it. Took my picture and then all my fingerprints and I was out. I arrived about 20 mins early, they took me right away.

If you're going to be applying for a visa, you cannot use Nexus to enter the US -- you need to go through the normal immigration line, and they will then redirect you to the secondary so you can apply for it.

Thanks. I was hoping to hear I can access the crew line, or have some option for a faster process.

It seems, to me at least, at YYZ T1 US Pre-Clearance they've stepped up making sure you're carrying your NEXUS card with you when you use the NEXUS kiosks. I've always had my NEXUS card in my hand, but the past few weeks they have actually asked to see it before stamping my boarding pass.

I will be crossing to the US (at YVR), to a visiting researcher appointment. I have been instructed that (as a Canadian) I will get a J-1 visa at the border. Can I use my nexus card for a faster crossing in this case?

Okay, I made the jump and applied for NEXUS. I had to fly up from SFO to SEA to do the interviews, but all went well and I was approved around 2 hours later ^. My NEXUS card appears to expire on my birthday after 5 years. That is, somewhere between 5 and 6 years from the date of interview. If you're near your birthdate, it may be to your advantage to apply shortly after your birthday so you can eek out almost an extra year for your $50.
For those of you that applied for Global Entry after getting approved for NEXUS, when did it expire? Was it coterminous with your NEXUS expiration date or was it from the date you applied? Did you also get (5 years + time to next birthday), or was it a straight 5 years from approval or application? I won't need GE for a few months, so if it's calculated from the date applied/approved, I figure I might as well wait a bit before applying for it. |

IME, I remember this happening on and off a while back, maybe about 1-3 years ago or so. Haven't been asked for my Nexus card for a long time at YYZ.
Haven't had to show the NEXUS card in awhile there. Went through Vancouver pre-clearance late last week, and there was a guy asking for NEXUS cards right at the kiosks. Actually, kind of hiding behind the cubicle/station nearest the kiosks. He was asking everyone for the card. |
I think they just do it on a random basis.
YYZ CBP staff meeting. "Oh, and today folks, we're going to check for Nexus cards." Result: Lots of big beefy guys with attitude standing just beyond the Nexus terminals. It happens some days. It doesn't happen other days. |

Officer after the machines in YYC: CBP: Where are you going in the US? Me: The LA and Vegas airports enroute to Hong Kong. CBP: That sounds like a terrible routing. Enjoy your flight. Coming back into Canada (from the US and HK) I just walked on through, no need to talk to anyone. |
