Log into GOEs hourly (or more) and check for earlier appointments. Seriously, there are cancellations all the time as other people move their appointments up, can't make it, etc., and there is no waitlist.

Just did the same for Ottawa - took a day and a half of frequently checking, but I've already moved up from May to March.

You do not need to log in GOES hourly or more, just leave your browser open, refresh every 5 to 10 minutes especially during the time Nexus offices are open. Over the course of two days, I was able to obtain an appointment in 12 days from conditional approval date at YVR Urban Center. YVR Urban Center has a special blitz of weekend availability to clear out a large back log.

I even found some appointments were available in less than 48 hours.

At least you have the online option. My GOES doesn't show that for some reason...

PacUpGo Feb 15, 2016 12:48 pm

I never noticed that on the GOES site though I may easily have missed it since I have not spent much time there ... will really have egg on my face if it is printed there :(

Yes, if you have a green card, that is what you use at the GE machine. If you are not a permanent resident, you're supposed to use your passport. If you are a US permanent resident, but insert your passport instead, it should recognize you as a GC holder and ask you to use it instead.

Finally, if the reader doesn't recognize the documents properly, there is a button on screen you can press that says "Problem reading document?" And pressing that will allow you to enter your passport or GC # manually.

Thanks for the clarification ! Maybe the system just locked me out after a few bumbling attempts since it def did not ask me for GC :o

I was told the same Jan. 30 at my appointment at YYZ.
Very definite - I pointed out that my passport must be renewed by next April - was told I must visit in person with the new passport .

+1: I pulled mine forward from April to Jan. 30 by constantly checking.
I saw some appointments come and go within 5 minutes, so be persistent and be swift!

Availability changes constantly throughout the day, more so when Nexus offices are open. Some appointments come and go in less than 5 minutes in my experience, luckily not when I tried to select one. Persistency does pay off if you want something real soon.

Nexus validity, similar to Global Entry, is 5 years from your next birthday. So it can be almost 6 years from approval date.

Do we have a definitive answer on how to update Nexus when you have renewed your passport? I have seen discussion saying it is no longer necessary to go into border office to do it and can be done online. I am Canadian, just want to make sure that both border sides are updated properly.

Thanks

This is a case where too much information is causing over analysis of an issue that is not there to begin with.

Many NEXUS members are not on FT nor do they drop by NEXUS office unless they have official business. They can only go by CBSA website. Written documentation from CBSA and NEXUS membership guide clearly state updates to passport can be done online.

A typical NEXUS member would update passport on GOES. When they next enter Canada, one of two things will happen.
  1. They clear NEXUS without problem.
  2. They get flagged

If first option, NEXUS member will go on they way and never give this a second thought.

If second option, they will tell CBSA that their website indicated otherwise and that they never received any notice indicating updating of passport# requires a NEXUS office visit and even if they did, how are they going to gain access to a NEXUS office without first entering Canada?

Neither 1Chinito nor myself gleaned this info from FT - we were both told this at our initial interviews, one at YVR & one at YYZ, both within the last month - and every Nexus holder must attend this interview. If this info is imparted at each initial interview, then each Nexus holder has more to go by than the CBSA website.

I was told the same at my interview in 2012, but then CBSA's published guide, updated in March 2015, says that in-person visits to the office for this are no longer required and that updating in GOES is enough. Why would somebody not on Flyertalk and who hasn't been in the office in four years have reason to doubt what the published rules say?

I too think this is a huge overreaction. Nobody has lost their NEXUS because they updated in GOES and not in person, and I doubt anybody ever will.

Where's the " huge overreaction" ?
We're simply reporting what we were told recently.
Would you prefer we didn't?

And I for one never said the consequence would be that one "lost their NEXUS because they updated in GOES and not in person".

I'd speculate that the harshest consequence, if there is one at all, would be denial of Nexus use at the time, not losing Nexus itself.

I asked if I also had to update my secondary i.d. - driver's license - in person - was told "no, just the passport ".
I asked if I could update immediately prior to a flight - was told yes, just allow a bit more time to make my flight.

Just FYI - YMMV.

That would be nice since I do not live in Canada nor near the boarder.

HI All,

I just received conditional approval and my nexus screening appointment is booked for April 28 in Halifax.

Does anyone have a feel for how often cancellations happen in Halifax?

I'm traveling on 3/27/16 and was hoping to have my card. Just wondered how realistic that was.

Thanks in advance.

PK

Check multiple times daily for cancellations. About this time last year my husband and I were able to get a last minute appointment the morning of an impending snow storm, rather than wait two months. The drive to the Halifax airport wasn't great but we were able to get our cards prior to our March Break vacation so it was worth it. Good luck.

Hello everyone,

I'm flying NRT-SFO-YVR. I understand preclearance in NRT is not yet a thing. My question is what happens in SFO? Obviously I will go through immigration right after landing. Does my NEXUS card assist in anyway here? Since my stopover is 8 hours I want to go into town (ideally hit an alcatraz tour) and I'm trying to determine if there's time. When I return to SFO for my YVR flight, does my NEXUS get me through security any quicker? It seems the answer to everything is no from my search, but I'm not confident I understood those sources. I'm Canadian. I'm on United and the booking is Terminal 3 for both flights. Thank you!
