Also, do you have to visit in-person if you've moved? Or is updating your mailing address online sufficient?

There is conflicting information from Canadian/US authorities about whether address changes require a visit in person. Canada says no, updating in GOES is enough. But the US says while using GOES is fine for a mailing address, you do need to visit in person for changes to your residential/permanent address.

After an address change within the US (different states, new driver license) I basically got an eye roll and an "update it online" command from the GE office. I just applied for NEXUS (having had GE since 2013) and will update if there's any issue over having updated resident address/driver's license online, but I doubt it (conditionally approved with the residence change, pending interview).

SIAP but I received another email from CBP today inviting me to apply for the UK Registered Traveller Program. Because I am a current NEXUS enrollee. It's 50£/year and a one-time 20£ application fee. I qualify anyway because of my trip frequency (>4x every 2yrs entering the UK) but it's not clear if that criteria is waived if you are NEXUS.

Anyway, if you arrive in J (biz) in T3 at LHR the lines for FastTrack inbound are short. Not convinced this is of real use inbound unless you don't gave airline status or a J ticket.

I might make sense with RT if you go to FastTrack outbound screening which is similar in part to Pre? But I go to FT outbound now because of my boarding pass info just like I do arriving.

So I would be interested if any NEXUS members that have also become an RT and why. And if you got offered and qualified even with <4x every 2 yrs.

Cheers

Edit: although this is called the UK version of GE I don't think the UK has a Pre equivalent departing where you don't go thru the drill of removing shoes (sometimes), liquid bag, and laptop. All I've seen for years is FT - shorter line but the same screening protocol as regular checking pax. If RT was a Pre equivalent I'm in.

CANPASS is actually five times the cost of NEXUS. CANPASS must be renewed annually at $50/year. The $50 application fee for NEXUS is good for 5-6 years. And even then, CANPASS doesn't get you to the shorter line at airport security. NEXUS is still needed for that.

Being deemed ineligible for NEXUS by the U.S. would be the only reason for a Canadian to enroll in CANPASS.

Yikes. That must have changed at some point - pretty sure when I had CANPASS (prior to Nexus existing and well before GE) it was $50 for 5 years.

How does Nexus communicate decisions to those who applied via paper application? They charged my card recently and I'm wondering whether or not some sort of decision has been made. I don't want to call and bother them for the status of my application though.

If it's been 2 weeks since the cc charge give them a call. A letter is sent through the mail, it's sometimes backed up a month or so. On the phone you'll get your passid to set up an account with Goes, then you can schedule an interview.

Thanks, I think I'll give them a call on Monday.

Fairly newish NEXUS user here - used it 3-4 times and only during land crossings (Detroit/Port Huron/Ft. Erie).

My wife and I are both NEXUS card holders; I am a US permanent resident (Canadian citizen) and she is a US citizen.

Flying in a few weeks from ORD with a 2-3 hours layover in YYZ before moving onto LHR.

The return trip is CDG to YYZ to ORD (thanks low Canadian dollar!).

Questions:

1. Should my NEXUS card be getting me Pre-Check in ORD and YYZ?

... and more importantly ...

2. Am I using NEXUS to enter YYZ for the layover and then when passing through US customs on my way back through YYZ to ORD?

Thanks,

Brian

1. The card doesn't get you TSA Precheck; that has to be indicated on your boarding pass. If you are flying on a participating airline (Air Canada is one, and given your itinerary that seems likely to be the one) you need to make sure your PASS ID is on your reservation as a "known traveler number" (not redress number, that's something different) so that you'll be eligible for Precheck at ORD.

Canada does things differently; the CATSA Trusted Traveler lanes are accessed by showing your NEXUS card.

2. Since I don't think there's a direct path from inbound US to outbound international at YYZ, on your ORD-YYZ-LHR routing you'd enter Canada. If your iris scans are on file with CBSA, you can use the NEXUS kiosks with your card; otherwise you'll have to use the regular lanes.

For the CDG-YYZ-ORD path, if CBP has your fingerprint scans you will be able to enter the US using the Global Entry kiosks and your passport or NEXUS card (probably easier to use the passport, since the scanners are sized for it).

Thanks for the heads-up on the NEXUS card via airlines. We've managed to have received Pre-Check while traveling in the US and it just showed up on the boarding pass ... I appreciate your info on how this might go in YYZ.

There are some anecdotal reports in this thread of CBSA officers insisting, contrary to official program rules, that visits to the office in person are required for passport updates. But there is no official source for that.

Thanks for posting that info. I have to update my DL (no other change on the thing other than my weight & expiration date), and for unknown reasons that cannot be done online. I suspect it's because that's seen as a "new" travel document (but FFS, it's issued by a state govt, so this should all be done via computer ).

Tried to book an appt for the SEA urban center. 6m wait! So I get to play the "refresh every day looking for something sooner" game. I started looking around the calendar, and it appears that the SEA center may only be open a few days per month. Has anyone else noticed this?

an update of information is a walk up. As you're already in the system, you don't need an interview that requires prep time(a sch apt) from them.

My further anecdotal evidence from speaking with a CBSA officer at my last renewal is that updating your passport in GOES only makes the info available to the US officials and it does not get shared with Canada. Therefore, the Canadian officials would "like" you to update it in their system by stopping by to let them make a photocopy of it. However, to maintain the facade that Nexus is a shared system between the two governments, they can't exactly "require" you to do it.

I presume CBSA website is controlled by CBSA and not CBP.

If CBSA likes it desperately enough for us to stop by to update our passport in person, they should update their website to strongly suggest we do so.

Thanks. I'm aware of their posted operating hours. However if you try to schedule an appointment, you'll see that there are many days where there are none. And I don't mean that there are no appointment times available...I mean there are no appointment times listed. This is true for all of April and May. Appointments show up again in June.
