We had no trouble using the NEXUS/GE kiosks at all. The US CBP guy barely blinked. it probably helped that I was travelling with the Mrs. and we were clearly in going-on-vacation mode, not you-need-a-visa mode.

Does anyone know what is required for the nexus interview for children? My husband can’t attend the interview at the same time and his nexus interview is scheduled later.

Do they do virtual interviews for a new applicant or is this just for renewals? Just submitted my application for conditional acceptance. Thanks in advance!

Reports only of successful scheduling for Global Entry interviews. Canadian side is apparently wary of using this for interviews, so no remote NEXUS interviews reported to date.

Remote interviews are not yet available for conditionally approved NEXUS applicants regardless of whether those are for first time or renewal applications..

Please refer to the following thread:

Get a notarized letter stating why he isn't there, that he approves your child being issued a NEXUS card and their travel to/from the US/Canada. Copies of his passport, confirmation, etc.

I used this site to obtain info on what to expect for Nexus interviews as I was a first time applicant and didn't know what to expect. Thanks for this thread, I found it very useful!

Since the interviews are just restarting now I wanted I let you know how mine went. I applied for the first time back in May 2021 and received conditional approval within a few days. As the enrolment centres were closed my application sat in that status for nearly a year. When the US centres reopened in fall of 2021 I didn't book an appointment because I thought I needed an iris scan and those seemed to only be done at Canadian enrolment centres. (The vast majority of my Nexus usage will be at airports)

Then with the news that US centres were reopening again this month I figured I should attempt to book an interview and get it over with as I was reading the backlog is enormous, and figured I can worry about the iris scan later. By sheer luck I managed to get an appointment on Wednesday. April 20 in Niagara Falls, NY (I live in Toronto so this wasn't bad, about a 90 minute drive each way)

The interview with both agents went quite smoothly. The US officer asked me if I had been to any other countries since I applied and I replied that I had and listed them, which didn't cause any issues. I was asked if I had been arrested or have had any issues crossing the border before, to which I answered no. The Canadian officer asked me why I wanted to join and I truthfully replied to help get through customs at the airport faster. And that was it, the vast majority of the interview was he US and Canadian officers explaining how to use the card and general do's and don'ts when entering each country using Nexus. At the end they said I was approved and I was given a paper printout with more info. There was no mention of computer issues that were causing cancellations as some others in this thread have experienced.

The Canadian officer said that iris scans are NOT being taken anymore as all of the Canadian kiosks that previously took iris scans for identity verification have been replaced with kiosks that use facial recognition. He did mention that the first time I use a facial recognition kiosk I'll need my passport as the kiosk will upload a copy of my passport photo. After that's been done a passport isn't needed when using the kiosks. So just a heads up if anybody is waiting for an appointment at a place that takes iris scans, don't bother! They don't exist anymore!

The US officer said my card would take 2 to 6 weeks to arrive. About an hour after I left the interview I got an email via the TTP portal saying my status had changed from Conditional Approval to Approved. I checked my TTP login this afternoon and the "Activate card" option is now showing so I believe that means my card is now in the mail, as before today that option wasn't there. I'm leaving for Europe on the evening of May 2 so hoping I can get my card by then!

Anyways just joined to give you guys and update on how the re-opened interviews are going. Good luck to those out there still trying to book appointments!

Thanks for sharing your experience! Please let us know when you do receive your card! I am interested to know how long they will take to reach Canadian mailing addresses at this point of reopening the centres and trying to handle all the interviews.

Some info others may find useful. I've now completed my first trip with a NEXUS card now expired for more than 2 years. My previous trip was the day before the post-2 year mark and everything was normal.

I entered the US using the GE kiosks at LAX and the machine told me to see agent immediately. The agent told me my GE was expired, asked me to update my photo, and waved me through.
I entered Canada using the NEXUS kiosks at YYC and nothing was out of the ordinary. Sometime last year these kiosks updated my photo.
I took 2 TSA Pre-Check eligible flights with different airlines while in the US but did not receive PRECHEK on either of the boarding passes.

To provide an update on this. I used an old GE machine last week (the one where you scan your passport) and it simply told me that my GE was expired. No receipt printed out, so I moved over to the regular line. I guess I'm out of luck for a few months. Thanks, CBSA!

FWIW - I took my first trip into the U.S. in a year and had to update my Nexus profile to reflect a new U.S. work visa. With the Canadian enrollment offices still closed, I planned to try a walk-in at a Global Entry Enrollment office upon arrival at DEN. Fortunately, the U.S. customs officer at YYZ was able to save me the hassle and updated my profile right there. It took a few minutes, and he indicated I was lucky I got his line as he had more access than others. If anyone is in a similar situation, it doesn't hurt to ask :)

Hey did you receive your card? Do you know exactly how many days it took for you to get the card?

Sorry for the late reply to this for those who were wondering, but I actually did get my card delivered on the same day I left for Europe! I'm in Iceland and haven't had a chance to check this thread until now.

The card arrived in my mailbox sometime in the afternoon and I headed to the airport with it around 6:00pm. The card was extremely helpful for getting through security at Pearson as the regular lines were huge but the Nexus line only had about 10 people in it. I was able to show my card and my two friends that I'm travelling with were allowed to use the Nexus line with me even though they don't have cards. Needless to say they were very impressed and are planning to apply for their own cards as soon as they get back.

So to give specifics, my interview took place at the Niagara Falls, New York Enrollment Center during the afternoon of Wednesday, April 20. The card arrived to my home in Toronto on Monday, May 2. The return address indicated the card was mailed from Washington, DC. The card was sent via regular post and wasn't registered.

Hope this helps!

Activating card process

Just an FYI for those of you receiving your card in the mail and of course needing to activate it. On mobile browser and actually on desktop site as well, the entry field for you to enter the security code on the back of your card does not take keyboard typed in entry. It only seems to take scan text using your camera and even at that, it’s tough to get the camera to sit just right to capture the right section of characters. My husband had to try several times to get his just right today to activate but it finally did!

Thanks for this experience. Did you use the GE/NEXUS kiosk or did you just use the regular line?
