I didn't realize my GE was expiring until I came into the country in early November and the machine told me my membership had expired. I subsequently found a regular monthly email over the preceding year reminding me it was about to expire--but the messages had all bypassed my inbox and I'd missed them. So I reapplied two weeks after expiration. Every time I've flown since, I've been annoyed about this. Mainly annoyed at not having TSA pre; I've come back into the country three times with no queues at immigration.

Next time, mark your calendar new expiration date and remind yourself to renew 364 days before expiration date. Instead of relying an email reminder from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Good advice! Wish I'd thought to mark it on my calendar five years ago--no reason I couldn't have :-) I'll try not to make the same mistake this time...

This is exactly what happened to me. GE expired while I was gone and I discovered it on re-entry. I submitted my renewal about 20 days after expiration (mid-October) and also called, but I am still waiting. When I realized how long it could take, I applied for TSA-Precheck separately. Even that application took two months, but it was finally approved. You might want to go that route while waiting if you are doing a lot of traveling. It is $70 and you can apply at https://www.tsa.gov/precheck. I put the charge on a different credit card than my GE renewal payment and both were reimbursed by the card company (both cards reimburse for GE or TSA-Pre.) Many people are approved in just a few days for TSA-Pre (see the other forum for that info). I think mine took two months because I have a very common name and perhaps needed a human to review. As an point of interest, my TSA precheck number is different from my former GE number. It starts with TT, has other alpha characters and could not be confused with my last GE number. Good luck.

Here is the update CBP gave my Senator, just received. Has some interesting stats

[My] renewal application has been received and is processing. The current status is "Pending Risk Assessment Review." All applicants can check the status of their application from the TTP Dashboard at https://ttp.cbp.dhs.gov/, which is displayed after login. Please note – expediting pending applications is not a service CBP can provide.
New and renewing applicants for Global Entry (GE), SENTRI, NEXUS and FAST should expect significant delays in application processing times and limited appointment availability at TTP enrollment centers. Processing times vary per application. Trusted Traveler Program applications are being submitted at a rate of between 12,000 and 18,000 daily. Currently, 80% of applications complete the initial processing and are conditionally approved or approved without an interview within 15 days. For those application that require additional review, estimates for initial processing times for new and renewal TTP applications are as follows:
  • Global Entry applications at approximately 272 days (approximately 9 months)
  • SENTRI applications are at approximately 522 days (approximately 17 ˝ months)
  • NEXUS applications are at approximately 584 days (approximately 19 ˝ months)
Again, these are average times and all applicants may not have the same wait – in fact, some applicants may unfortunately have their application pending past the number of days listed above, while others may see their application approved before the listed number of days elapse. Global Entry applications are processed and vetted individually. As a result Global Entry applications submitted by a family group may experience varying processing times, with some family members receiving conditional approved ahead of others. Fortunately, up to 70 percent of incoming Global Entry applications are vetted within 16 days or less, but unfortunately, the other 30 percent require more time and there is no way to determine how much.
Regrettably we do not have a work around for this situation. In addition, some members of a family may have substantially more information to review in terms of a background check, which may also prolong a risk assessment review. Examples of this include but are not limited to a common first and last name, complex travel history, a career in the national security area or familial and/or business associations. An application may take a shorter or longer time to process due to the operational procedures at the Vetting Center, not when the application was submitted. Notification of these delays is displayed quite prominently on the TTP page and would have been visible at the start of their application process.

The good news is that since the application was submitted prior to the expiration date, the active membership status has been extended for 24 months, now expiring on X, Y, 2024, to allow for processing. He may continue to use their Trusted Traveler benefits as normal until then.

The validity of a TTP membership will be extended 24 months beyond the expiration date for Global Entry and SENTRI, and 60 months (5 years) for NEXUS; provided that the TTP member submits a renewal application before their TTP membership expires. This change will apply to all TTP programs, including Global Entry (GE), NEXUS, SENTRI, and FAST.

During this 24-month benefit extension, TTP cards will remain valid for use and the member’s account in our system will remain in “Approved” status and the applicant will have full access to their benefits. With that in mind, the applicant may use their benefits as part of their current membership term until the renewal is complete or until they reach their new extended expiration date. We recommend a printed copy of the pending renewal/conditional approval page from the TTP Dashboard be brought to show the CBP Officer in the Trusted Traveler lane in case they ask.

The trusted benefits extension for applicants who had applied for renewal before the original expiration date of their trusted traveler program membership have been extensively discussed in this thread and in the https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/trus...timelines.html thread.

Geez. Glad you finally got it! With the state appoint and the detailed reply from another poster gives us a good indication of timing if we weren’t approved contemporaneously with our application or renewal. Thanks guys. Enjoy your travels!

Mrs. B submitted renewal app, approved within 48 hours, no interview ^ Considered also submitting ABTC app but decided against it as she hasn't really done sufficient biz travel for my company.

Just my 2 cents but I think the interview (or lack thereof) is majorly dependend on the countries that you visited in the prior 5 years.

Those of you with NO INTERVIEW. What were you told at the beginning of the process?

It was noted an interview would be required when informed of preliminary approval. Then when full approval was granted no further steps required.

No, because not even the CBP knows whether or not they need an interview, either to clarify stuff they found in their background check, or to update photos/fingerprints, until the background check is complete.

The application reviewer looks at the info and decides whether or not an interview is needed.

Earlier today we were at an enrollment center for my moms (new applicant) interview. This is what the officer told us that she heard from her supervisor. And supervisor had told us the same number a while ago when he stopped to have conversation with me.

Problem:
  1. Current backlog is 2.3 million applications (new and renewals combined) for officers to work on. Plus they got additional ~90k just last week.
  2. Enrollment centers are swamped with interviews and slots have been booked for months.

Remedies:
  1. They are now going to start (or started) approving renewal cases that were submitted in time and have no other red flags. So many will start to see their approval come in
  2. Resources are being called to DC to help with the backlog
  3. They are getting additional funding to add resources for interviews. So when you see a bunch of interview slots open up that is because that enrollment center got additional officers to help with interviews

The officer who interviewed my mom said that their auto approve algorithm is very stringent and if you are not automatically approved then that means someone has to manually review the application and push to approval. In fact even they do not get preferential and 3 of their own officers are in the same waiting game as ours.

When she looked into my application (applied Nexus and GE expires this year), she said it is pending Risk Assessment Recheck but everything else looks good. She said that she will not be surprised if my application just got approved out of the blue without an interview. My assumption is that some countries trigger Risk Assessment Recheck (manual check).

Note: Some of the information is hearsay so I am just passing along what I was told.
