Thanks so much for the help. I was able to find the YYZ-SCL flight for Tuesday, 2 Nov by selecting the +1 day option. I'm actually trying to track it to see if they release additional business class seats because as of now, I have an award seat in coach for 10 hours <shudder>.

You're welcome & good luck with your search!

The new [Awards/AC-StarAlliance] Method can certainly make things easier.

However, you can still use the [Awards/StarAlliance] Method, but you should do the route construction yourself first, e.g. using the [Timetables], where you can specify up to 3 airlines & which can automatically build routings with up to 5 segments.

KVS Tool Review: Extremely disappointing customer service

It seems like the KVS tool is valuable for people who get used to working with it, but I tried it on the advice of this forum and am very disappointed with my experience.

The first is that the website and usage is a bit confusing. It has lots of talk about "Contribution" which implies a voluntary sort of thing, but it's actually a commercial product that you can't use without purchasing.

That's fine, for-profit is great. However, I'm new to booking award travel and am not sure how valuable any one tool is, and there appears to be no way to test it for free.

I purchase a two month membership, but the tool is stubborn and the method listed on their own guide doesn't work correctly. It says you have to upgrade from Platinum to Diamond, which is confusing.

At this point, I'd been trying to get it to work for a couple hours, and I emailed them and asked for a refund, uninstalled the tool, and I researched my flight segments by hand.

The representative from KVS was extremely disappointing in their service (or lack thereof) - very arrogant, saying they "are unable to issue refunds for arbitrary reasons" and that being displeased with the service and getting no benefit from it is not a valid reason!

Shame on KVS. I'm sure it's great if you can get it working, but I'm very disappointed with the service. I'm not trying to get one over here - I've gotten no benefit from them, just run-around, and I did on the strength of FlyerTalk recommendations!

Very, very disappointed. I'd recommend against KVS tool based on this experience.

I'm a newbie like yourself Sarbanes. This tool, and expertflyer, are powerful data rich services both, but alas, its an extremely steep learning curve for those of us who are new to the whole game.

The cost of both tools is pretty small, given the possibilities they offer, I took the plunge and went straight for a diamond 12 month subscription. A lot of the reason for this is that I am trying to view the whole thing as a relatively cheap exercise in my education. Being able to have the KVS tool formulate a search query created from a fare basis which can be used directly on the matrix.ita web site is alone worth the money to a newcomer like myself. More knowledgeable users probably wouldn't use that function, but for me, finding quality, economical fares was really difficult (and still is!) but looking for those elusive fare basis tickets was driving me nuts.

Its my opinion that you have to be prepared to devote more than a couple of hours to using these types of tools. I've put several days into my experience so far, and I still have a long way to go. If you are interested in quality seats, on quality planes, with the possibility of upgrades and whatnot I can't find another (simpler) way than these types of tools.

[edit: To KVS. I know there are several examples on the official website, but even the simpler ones assume a bit of pre-existing knowledge. I know the tool can't easily cater to very new folk like me (who need a single big button hehe) but perhaps one simple, step-by-step example, using no jargon and only the buttons available on the KVS tool itself would be a help to new comers understanding? For example, how to find, and ticket, the cheapest fare from LON-NYC on AA .. any city pair would do)

I have been getting weird, and pretty frustrating results from matrix.ita over the last couple of days. Its like some of the search criteria are causing lookup problems, but anyway, perhaps its just me doing strange things.

However, can anyone understand why the following would work:

PER-NAN return

Out 10 Oct 11
IN 18 OCT 11

Business class

Using Sabre Fares/DotRes (and other methods) gives a fare basis D2F with QF.

If I right click on this fare basis in KVS, and choose "find flights using this fare [ITA], specific date 10-18 OCT, the matrix.ita site returns a flight, and the search is successful.

Yet, if I choose a month long search starting 10 OCT (1 week turnaround), the matrix.ita site returns that there are no flights. If I modify the search criteria at the Matrix site to cover 10-18 OCT it still returns no flights.

I seem to have to use specific dates only, otherwise, no dice. Sounds like a matrix site error to me, but perhaps a kind reader of this post can enlighten me?

The new site: http://matrix.itasoftware.com/ seems to be a lot more powerful in relation to searches. Any way I can use KVS to search for a fare basis with the new interface at matrix/ita?

multi segment trips

Hi,

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I can't see the answer anywhere. Can I define a route on the availability and fares tabs? For example, I need to fly LHR to Reno, and I want to go via Los Angeles. Can I "force" KVS to only return routes that go via LA?

Thanks,

As has been mentioned previously, you have been originally trying to use an incorrect Method.

Well, the [Go] button is pretty big :).

That would be the intention behind the recently-added Airfare/Trip Pricing Basics & Using the KVS Tool to Plan a Trip or Mileage Run sections at http://www.KVSTool.com/Planning-A-Trip.php

However, if you have any specific ideas or suggestions that would further help fellow "newcomers", those would be most welcome.

This is exactly what I'm talking about. This isn't helpful.

The patronizing tone and unhelpfulness of the representatives of your company is awful.

You apparently don't realize I've gotten nothing of value from your software - I usually give a company the benefit of the doubt, but this is ridiculous.

I'll additionally protest the charge with the credit card company - you want to get paid after providing something of poor quality where your own documentation is broken, the customer has received no value, and you're rude and inconsiderate about it. Anyone who is used to a higher level of customer service should avoid KVS. This behavior is disappointing.
