PLEASE LIST YOUR RETENTION OFFERS IN THE CHART AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS WIKIPOST.
The 2023 version of this thread is HERE.
AmEx official term for what we call Retention Offer is Loyalty Incentive (offer). Amex representatives/agents have no discretion over retention offers, its all computer/algorithm generated. Often there are 2 offers; points or miles for certain spend within certain timeframe, statement credit for same spend and timeframe. The agent might only state one of these, might need to ask about the other if interested. Sometimes a 3rd offer to use miles or points to pay annual fee.
Usually available every 13 months. Accepting an offer obligates keeping the account open for 1 year.
Theres no rhyme or reason to these offers. Some high use cards get no significant offer, some minimal use cards get high offer. Offers can change on a daily basis. No reports of adverse action due to asking about retention offers too often. Can discuss multiple (personal or biz cards) in one call. Agents are required to read a somewhat lengthy disclaimer if an offer is accepted AND if an offer is declined.
Membership Consulting (Retention) department:

American Express (USA) retention offers (2024)

I accepted a retention offer for my Hilton Business card last year. After I accepted it, I decided the offer was too poor for me to actually put spend on the card just to get the $50 statement credit the retention offer entitles me to.
The annual fee is coming up soon. This is the first annual fee for this card, and I am thinking about closing the card. I know there won't be any clawback of credit since, well, I never received any. But, will I be on Amex's naughty list?
I am in popup jail with Amex at the moment. I don't particularly mind that because I am still getting my credit card applications approved with Chase, Citi, BoA etc at the moment. I believe Amex will come around when the business economy improves. However, I also don't want to antagonize Amex, as Amex cards are by far the largest component of my credit card portfolio.
Thoughts/opinions on what I should do? Cancel the card as it has no bearing on my future with Amex, or suck up the $95 annual fee for this Amex Hilton Biz renewal?
If it matters I just renewed and paid for my Schwab Platinum card annual fee, and will probably also renew my Delta Biz Gold card when the first annual fee is due this fall.

There are no reports of adverse effects due to closing an account after accepting but not meeting a retention offer (and thus never receiving the points or miles). I did it a month ago so too soon to tell from personal expereince. Multiple AmEx phone reps over the past month have said it shouldnt be a problem, only thing they might do is clawback the points or miles.

To me: no SUB, no approval (because no application).

I also asked for about offers on my Amex Gold, but there were none. I realized after calling that this might be because I need to wait a few more days until it's been 12 months from an authorized user offer. I'll wait a couple of weeks and try again, since I'll still be in the period where I can get my annual fee refunded.

In general I tend to agree with you. No SUB, no life! However, there are reasons why one would open a credit card even without a SUB. Think, for example, of a family who is about to plan a vacation at Conrad Maldives. You can see how even without a SUB, the benefits of the Aspire card can be worth the hefty annual fee even without a SUB.

Okay. That hasnt been my experience at all. I just got my current biz a year ago and have had and currently have a pop up in my account for another one with NLL. 120k MR for $15k spend. P2 who doesnt have a biz now but has in the past also has this pop up with NLL.
So I'm not sure who they are or aren't targeting but I wouldn't make a blanket statement that NLL offers have dried up.

I haven't had NLL offers dry up either. I don't usually get pop ups, but do get plenty of offers in the mail. For awhile I was getting a slow trickle of the 130k/$15k Biz Plat offers which isn't the best you can get but certainly better than a $20k/20k retention. In the past few months I've gotten several 200k/$30k Biz Plat offers, as well as 125k/$10k Biz Gold offers. My dad received the same for Biz Plat and $100k/$10k Biz Gold offers.
So I'm not sure who they are or aren't targeting but I wouldn't make a blanket statement that NLL offers have dried up.

I'm not going to try to "convince" you that there has been a change in NLL offers and whether or not they are as broadly offered as they once were, but there is an entire thread discussing it and there are many, many data points regarding folks who have traditionally gotten the offers and they have indeed dried up for many of us. If you care to review the thread you may see that it's not always as simple as your advice implies. The fact that you are still getting the offers does not mean that everyone else is

I don't believe I made a "blanket statement" that all NLL offers have dried up. I simply said, they are not always avaiable to everyone, all the time, so critizing others for taking a retention offer and assuming the only "smart thing" to do is just go grab an NLL when one might not be available is equally silly advice.

. I am aware that there have been mentions of NLL offers drying up for some, but was just sharing my own experience and observations.Of course, one should and can only take an NLL offer over a retention if it's available to them. If not, then retention offers as well as adding employee cards with bonuses attached to them if available is certainly another route to go.
In addition, the OP had mentioned ditching the retention for a Chase Business card so the advice I was giving in that was the case, was to take a full annual fee refund on the Amex Biz card while they still can.

Yes, I do follow that thread and if you take a moment to do so as well you would see that the current last post is actually mine

At least to me, the language you used just seemed to assume that NLLs are obviously available to everyone (including the poster you were responding to, without verifying that) and they very much are not.
If your question had been directed at me, my answer would be "of course I'd rather open a new Biz Plat card with NLL and get a boat load more points" but that option is not currently available to me (and believe me, both the wife and I have verified all possible, known paths)

Possible clawback question. I took an offer ($150 statement credit + 20000 miles) to upgrade from Amex Delta Gold to Amex Delta Platinum 2 months after paying Gold Fee. Now that Delta Platinum fees have increased, I will not be renewing when fee comes up. Probably will downgrade to Delta Gold. Will be only 10 months from upgrade offer. Any chance Amex will clawback, even though they changed terms of card after I upgraded?

I closed one in December and one last month. Am on track to close 2 more by the end of March if they keep up with this stingy 20k/$20k offer.
