For New Zealand from 1 October 2019, if you are from a visa waiver country you must request an NZeTA before you travel.
NZ transit does/may require a NZeTA. But check yourself.

If you're going straight through AKL to Australia then you should be able to OLCI (myself included).
Good point. We were flying ORD-AKL-SYD with only transit at AKL, which may account for our OLCI success.

That said, the NZeTA is required whether you're transiting or entering NZ, so it seems odd that stopping over in NZ would prevent OLCI while transiting wouldn't.

We're back from ORD-AKL-SYD on UA, SYD-SFO-ORD on UA and I thought I'd post a mini TR with what I think are some relevant points.

Outbound
  • After reading some of the WX horror stories, we decided to fly from LGA to ORD the night before and stay at the ORD Hilton. It turned out to be a good move. Made everything very relaxed.
  • Not being sure if we could OLCI with NZ, we were prepared to check-in at T5 4 hours before the flight, high-tail it to the PL in T1, then come back. As it turned out, we were able to OLCI, which made everything a lot easier. vincewy suggests this was because we were connecting not stopping over, but I can't speak to that.
  • Had a lovely, drawn-out boozy lunch at the PL. ^
  • Since we stayed at the Hilton, we left our bags there rather than drag them around. Made things easier. Plus, the Hilton has a dedicated T5 shuttle that took us right there in plenty of time. ^
  • T5 is, as most know, a mess, and the SK lounge provided no refuge. It was really bad, actually: tiny, hot, overcrowded, no bathroom (!), and poorly behaved people. (One guy decided to relax by taking off his socks!) My wife, who had a sore throat and just wanted hot tea, couldn't even get that, as the hot water machine was busted. Big
  • Our NZ flight to AKL was just lovely. Super kind FAs, wonderful food, great wines, lovely Kiwis (and vincewy!) to chat with on the way over ^ When we asked to try Marmite, the FAs couldn't believe it...they insisted we compare Vegemite and Marmite, and made us "Mousetraps" (open faced butter, Marmite and cheese sandwich, baked until the cheese melts) a la carte! We had a hilarious time discussing the pros and cons of each.
  • Bottom line on the seat: Yes, it's out of date. Yes, it's too narrow, noticeably more so than on the 777-200 we flew to SYD. Yes, the darn drink tray is in the worst place. But we got a solid 7+ hours of sleep...so how can we complain? ^ ^
  • The lounge experience in AKL was ridiculous. More than half of the shower rooms were out of order, and there was no sign-up list, so we spent the majority of our layover waiting in the corridor for our turn. I liked the coffee ordering situation, but had almost no time to enjoy my flat white
  • Flight to SYD was nice. Thought it was our second breakfast, I appreciated the different menu choices ^
Inbound
  • SYD-SFO on UA was a mess. FAs were soulless/wordless during service times...except when it came to their chit chat in the galley. Sitting in 6D, I was woken up three times by the FAs jabbering in the mid-section galley. WTH!?!!
  • After giving up on sleep, I walked to the galley (didn't want to even risk hitting the call button) to ask for mid-flight grilled cheese. What followed was bizarre. Both FAs tried to talk me out of it. One said, "I don't think you want it. It's really, really not that good." The other said, "It's not like the grilled cheese on American." (!?) I gently persisted. They reiterated that I wouldn't like it and would be disappointed. Were they oddly, inappropriately "looking out for me" or just too lazy to stick it in the oven? I wasn't the only one who got this treatment: I heard the same lines delivered to two other people. And the verdict? It was perfectly fine given that (a) it's plane food, (b) it's UA plane food; and (c) I was hungry. But really, no FA has ever tried so hard to dissuade me in this way. Weird.
  • SFO PL was a zoo, which is suppose is to be expected. A victim of its success. We had a long layover and were looking forward to relaxing in the quiet rooms... Which kind of didn't happen. First, we didn't realize the loungers aren't flat; they're contoured. So you can't lay down and can't really relax. Kind of defeats the purpose. Also, the quiet room gatekeepers are pretty over the top. Before we could take a shower, we had to produce our BPs, which I understand, but it took the lady forever to copy the information she needed. I'm talking about 5+ minutes per BP. Bizarre. Later, when I wanted a quiet room, I gave me SYD-SFO BP, you know, the one that gives me access. The guy insisted he needed my SFO-ORD BP, which I didn't have because we didn't fly the segment and it disappeared from my iPhone. I said my SYD-SFO BP should be enough as (a) it got us into the showers and (b) um, it's the same-day UA flight in Polaris that gave us arrival access to the lounge in the first place. He insisted I was wrong. This went back and forth. Finally, he just gave up and took the SYD-SFO BP. I mean really.
Happy to answer any other questions...

Thanks for this nice summary. Were you supplied with the NASA pillow and All Birds eye mask on the ORD-AKL flight?

No All Birds! It was very upsetting!! () I was looking forward...

About the pillow frankly I'm not sure. We had two pillows, and I think one was a little different than the other, but not by much.

I have the menu and will post it here soon.

I just made it back on Sunday 20th, AKL-ORD in NZ metal. The trip has exceeded my expectations. Besides what AS219 just mentioned, shower rooms were fixed when I returned, also I really don't care for the food on NZ. This is largely due to being used to TK catering. But for such deal plus 30K miles (1 trip that gave me 75% of miles needed for another 2 years renewal on TK), there's no ground for me to complain, considering most seat neighbors paid at least $6000 (it's much more expensive if you're based in AKL).

For those still haven't made the trip yet and will be staying in Auckland, consider staying around hotels along K-Road, rather than CBD, where all the cheaper shops, eateries, and local residents are. You also get a panoramic view of the city from here.

I ended up cancelling mine as costs in Cook Islands were skyrocketing plus it was going to be too cool for water activities. I got so excited when PL agent came back off hold with "I have good news". Then it turns out she was excited for me that it was refundable. Yea I knew that I was hoping they were going to waive cancel fee.

Isn't it ironic that you were excited getting all the good deals but end up cancelling some? I'm on the same boat and considering cancelling one of them or drop the return portion (as I nested 1 PNR between 2 trips)

[PREM FARE GONE] AM: Canada - GRU/SCL J from $1500 CAD ($1123 USD)

TK: YUL-SIN/SGN J $2700/$3075 CAD (under 2k USD)

Phillipine Airlines $1,562 RT Business Taipei to Toronto

Sometimes it's not just cost associated with the trips but also fatigue. I'm still drained out mentally from this trip and you really need to space out between long trips.

I ended up doing a mini RTW points burn instead. just what i needed was more orphaned miles. Plus I was able to build my replacement itin around the random flight I picked using the IB 90K points deal. I ended up in SYD after all on the trip. The money back helped me pay off some bills.

Just returned from our journey down under and thought I would add some comments. Overall the flights were excellent, we routed ORD-AKL stop AKL-SYD stop, SYD-AKL-ORD all on NZ. As noted by others the seats are a little dated in design, but they do make for very comfortable beds and for me that is the most important criteria for such a long haul flight. The eye shades are collector items, definite keepers. I was disappointed that neither slippers nor PJ's were provided. Food and service on all segments was good.

On our outbound we added on a AKL-CHC flight as a separate ticket long after buying the mistake fare. Transiting to domestic in AKL was no problem. We did not even try to tag our bags all the way to CHC knowing that we had to collect in AKL anyway, so on exiting customs we followed signs to NZ domestic transfer and re-checked our bags at the dedicated desks in the international terminal, then caught the bus over to domestic terminal. It was of course morning rush hour for domestic flights so took some time to get through security and then we went to the NZ domestic lounge which we got access to by producing our incoming business class boarding pass. Domestic NZ lounge was very busy when we arrived but it thinned out as morning rush flights departed.

Food and drink selection in the NZ domestic lounge was far superior to that in the SAS lounge in ORD T5. Frankly the ORD SAS lounge is far from acceptable international premium class standard. But I don't think the alternatives (Priority Pass) would have been much better. The showers in NZ domestic lounge are just acceptable. They are kind of small and do not have their own toilet... just showers.

Continuing on to SYD we were on a mid-day 777 flight. The AKL airport experience was excellent overall. NZ premium checkin is a separate room from all other checkin desks and, at least when we were there, an oasis of tranquility. It felt like a really personalized service and once checked-in there is a private elevator up to the passport/security check. Top marks to NZ for this. The NZ international lounge at AKL was superior to their domestic lounge in every way. While similar in design it was far less busy and more spacious. I checked out the showers and they were much larger and better than the domestic lounge (with their own toilets). I did not use the shower on this leg, but I did on the return SYD-AKL-ORD segment.

On the return leg SYD check-in was nothing special, just usual premium designated desks. We had a NZ rugby league team ahead of us in the check-in line which slowed things a bit. In fact there were three NZ sports teams on the SYD-AKL flight as announced and congratulated by the crew just prior to departure. Connecting at AKL was really smooth and with NZ just announcing New York (EWR) non-stops to AKL starting next year this is going to become a pretty attractive routing for New York travelers to any Australian city. Connecting in AKL is going to be a far better experience than connecting in SYD (terminal change) or LAX/SFO/DFW/wherever. I predict NZ will have a winner with this new route.

We arrived at ORD early, but had to wait for 45 minutes to pull into our gate as previous aircraft was late to depart. That made for a tighter connection to our AA flight to LGA... it ate up almost all of the buffer that I had allowed for. But ORD baggage handlers did their job and our premium tagged bags arrived quickly, the AA re-check desk in T5 had no line, the inter-terminal bus (while airtrain is being refurbished) was quick, and the T3 TSA pre-check security had no line.

Finally... a shout out to Tile bluetooth finders. There is something very reassuring to have the app tell you that your bags are nearby even before they appear on the baggage claim belt.

Has anyone had any luck getting on an earlier flight on the AKL-SYD leg? Currently booked on the 11am, but land at 6:30am. Seems like there is still availability on both the 7am (likely not doable) and the 9am.

I was able to do it for domestic AKL-CHC but I had bought that as a separate one-way ticket where I had consciously purchased their same-day flex ticket that permits changes to any other flight on the day of travel. I was booked on a 11am AKL-CHC and was able to move it to 10am (9am was sold out). I actually did this with their mobile app on landing at AKL. Had it confirmed before we got off the aircraft. I do not know if there is any flexibility in the original ticket but I would suggest firing up ANZ's mobile app on landing and going through the steps to try and change the flight. It may or may not work... I'm betting it probably won't, in which case you can try asking ANZ after you arrive at their lounge... there is a service desk just behind the entrance.
