I'm pretty sure that is "something bad... at their datacenter". Mainframes take a while to do a cold start/IPL...

The Achilles heel for our mainframes (Control Data) was the firmware in the peripherals that were needed to boot the mainframes. A complete outage required engineers to come in & boot the tape units. Abrupt power outages also sometimes damaged modules that were never intended to be abruptly unpowered. It could take an hour or two to get a system back up once the engineers were on site.

Backup power supplies can work. We had batteries would run the mainframes (175, 3x730, 73) for 20 minutes, by which time the generators would have kicked in. The backups were tested regularly.

Wonder if this will make DL rethink their interline with AA...

If I were flying DL to DAB today, I'd be SOL until ops restarted because the only other airline I can use to get there is...AA.

You can get away with ending an interline with an airline when there are four other majors to interline with. Not when there's only one.

And it's in the air. Estimated SIN arrival of 4:34am.

That's almost better than arriving at 1 am, but of course only if you were to know of the schedule change far in advance.

At the risk of making some light aviation related banter, this forum sure sounds like the "Client/Server design and continuity of operations" forum.. :)

On another note (and it is just hope) i am tentativeiy to be on DL130 to Munich this afternoon. We'll see how that goes..

LOL. We're Delta. Interline agreements are for wimps. :D

Pretty astounding for this to happen to a company of this size.

Well, WN is about DL's size, so not all that astounding --

WN - 24B
DL - 29B

Even Amazon has not been immune to having issues (despite having put quite a bit of effort and thought into redundancy) --

Posting mostly to follow the updates.

Have a domestic flight Wednesday night and then leave for vacation on Thursday. Assuming/hoping that the long-hauls are getting priority as things get back online and things will have settled down a bit by then...

AA was relying more on them than they were on AA and today doesn't change that. Calculated business decision.

Wanna bet that there is some loophole that excludes events like this from the DOT reporting requirements?

Yea, that's true. But with airlines, the customer impact and lost good will from outages like this is huge. If I can't place an order with Amazon for the day or 2 it's not nearly as big a deal.

Only if AA doesn't have it's own meltdown anytime soon.

This is just Karma biatch punishing Delta for its shady non-transparent award flight practices :D
