What I gather is that the data center itself didn't have a fire, but the generator switching (which is usually outside the data center).

Like I said in my earlier post, assuming this is all true, while a freak thing it's surprising a company the size of Delta doesn't have this in the DR plan.

I'm sure Bastian can't be thrilled with this happening at the start of his CEO tenure.

I wonder if any news agencies are reading this thread for hints. It's like having 100's of stringers out in the field.

It's pretty wild to see that only 24 Delta aircraft are airborne at the moment:

An hour later, Flightaware is showing 68 Delta flights in the air.

i once went to a client's datacenter, which was located in the BASEMENT of one of their buildings. i looked up, and above all of the infrastructure that ran all of their business i saw... WATER PIPES! yes, WATER PIPES! now THAT is nearly suicidal. you can reboot after a power failure, but if your servers have a shower...

I guess that makes the This Is Fine cartoon especially valid!

You can ask the Venable Law Firm about that. They kept their global IT system in the basement of their DC office - below the waterfall that used to adorn the back wall of Rosa Mexicana. Waterfall overflowed and flooded the basement one Sunday evening. Not sure how the law suits ultimately ended, but the beautiful waterfall is no more.

Can't book on web site

Just tried to buy three tix for Oct 25-30. Got all the way to the payment page, then it said "Sorry - no can do" and asked me to call DL (which has "over two hour" hold times at the moment of course).

So, those considering buying or changing tix might not be able to at the moment.

I didn't book a flight with Delta. Is there a way to pose as a victim and get some compensation ?

Did the crew time out? If other flights are leaving NRT, that's a bit surprising as LAX is fewer flight hours than some of the other TPAC routes.

Is there space and time to rebook people for flights leaving today?

NRT ops for today:

DL276 NRT-DTW STD 1520 ATD 1537
DL622 NRT-PDX STD 1545 ATD 2143
DL172 NRT-JFK STD 1555 cancelled
DL473 NRT-KIX STD 1600 ATD 2209
DL167 NRT-TPE STD 1625 ATD 2219
DL295 NRT-PVG STD 1610 ATD 2158
DL296 NRT-ATL STD 1615 cancelled
DL616 NRT-MSP STD 1625 cancelled
DL275 NRT-MNL STD 1630 ATD 2200
DL283 NRT-BKK STD 1630 ATD 2054
DL166 NRT-SEA STD 1650 ATD 2115
DL284 NRT-LAX STD 1650 cancelled
DL610 NRT-GUM STD 1655 ATD 2117
DL615 NRT-SIN STD 1700 ETD 2235, was 2215 and then 2230, let's see if they make it out by curfew

So DL managed to get all the intra-Asia (except SIN, for now) flights and PDX/SEA out but everything longer cancelled/crew probably timed out. I guess some LAX pax can be ferried to HND to catch HND-LAX but I think most will end up overnighting in Tokyo... must have been a fun afternoon/evening at NRT

Sounds like you're the guy who loots the grocery store after the earthquake...

If you were actually scheduled to fly today then that's one thing.

Living in Atlanta, it could have been a massive power outage (I experienced this at Intel in a fabrication facility nearly the exact day in August 20 years ago), or a lightning strike.

We lost power for over three hours last night, which is unusual for my area of Atlanta (key Southern Company execs live near me, so they get first priority...).

615 left the gate at 2235 and is 'awaiting takeoff' so looking hopeful.
