Phone agent tried to tell me my SEA-DTW flight is on time because the plane is coming from PVG...except it is a 757.

yohanson Aug 8, 2016 9:07 am

I was able to check in for my flight tonight this morning on the web but the app is telling me that I have no upcoming flights.

Try now...flights disappeared but have now reappeared.

Some really great stuff out there.

DM line tells me my flights look good but the app shows incoming equipment running four hours late.

Asked same agent if I could be protected on tomorrow's flights (going to an African destination so not easy to find seats) and response was, "we don't do that in IRROPS."

I looked up DL1791 at one point and it showed a flying altitude of 82,400 feet just before landing in MSP! Kudos to all of you on that flight. Wonder if the masks dropped?

I'm eagerly anticipating the "Whoops we f#$(@ up sale" we should be made aware of shortly:

Plan a colorful fall/winter escape full of sand, sea and adventure and save when you book manually by visiting one of our ticket offices through August 10, 2016. Then, make plans to take in all these great destinations have to offer with fewer crowds — from January 9 through March 8, 2017. Book now to catch great deals and note select markets qualify for this sale:

Atlanta--Knoxville $59
Atlanta--Macon $39
Atlanta--Birmingham $49
Atlanta--Memphis (yes we still fly there!) $59
New York--Albany $49

I do really feel for those that had morning flights today, what an incredibly crappy way to start a work week.

I may have some rose-colored glass on right now, but DL was able to get things back up and running a couple of hours into the (US) operational delay. Now that alone will make today brutal, and the backups at the hubs causing ground stops will only exacerbate matters, but I expect the impacts past today to be somewhat limited. Definitely still some delays/cancelations tomorrow morning due to knock-on effects from today/tonight. But by Wednesday I expect DL to be running pretty normally.

Now let's see if my optimism is misplaced.

Waiver confusion

I am somewhat confused about the dates they have issued the change fee waiver for. The website states August 8th travelers can rebook until the 12th without any fees. Several media outlets are reporting the waiver covers all flights between the 8th and the 12 th. I am scheduled to fly tomorrow from Maui to New York and would like to cancel and rebook with another carrier but I don't want to do that before I know how delta is going to handle tomorrow's flights. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like it was perhaps the switching gear? But anyhow, look at where TEPCO put their backup generators...

Totally odd.

For even single-million-companies we do DR "100s of miles away" (and 'backup'/failover at least in a different building, better other end of city.)

You probably don't have active/active or even warm standby for your 1960's era mainframe apps. I don't know how much works at Delta without those core systems existing.

Indeed. You'll find its typical that companies of Delta's size have data centers in very redundant places (think somewhere on the east coast then somewhere in the mountains out west)

We're talking business continuity with that, and the idea is to be outside blast radius. Doing separate coasts is usually to reduce latency to half the country.

At the risk of making some light aviation related banter, this forum sure sounds like the "Client/Server design and continuity of operations" forum.. :)

On another note (and it is just hope) i am tentativeiy to be on DL130 to Munich this afternoon. We'll see how that goes..

Well, most of us armchair Airline Executive around here, this is what some of us actually do ;)
Viel glück nach München...

Mr. Parker's IT system sucks. I have been unable to purchase online on their website for two years and counting because the frequent flyer system and the booking system have some incompatibility. The web service folks don't know when they could resolve the problem.

Welcome to FlyerTalk Maui808!

The current travel waiver only allows changes for flights scheduled on August 8. Changes must be made by August 12 for travel no later than August 12. But only August 8 flights can be changed with no fees at this time.

Keep an eye on the waiver however, as Delta could potentially extend the impacted travel dates depending on how well they recovery goes today.

ETA: Note that the waiver as worded does not allow cancelation for a refund.

Sounds like Delta (and AWS) needs a "Chaos Engineering" team:

Glad I flew into MSN last night and not this morning!

This would be really disappointing if true. This is Delta's problem and they owe customers accommodations.

Thank you, that's how I read it too. I appreciate your response.

That's pretty unacceptable if true. Though I can't help but wonder about availability of rooms in Narita? It looks like Delta has four 777s full of people to house.

jdrtravel Aug 8, 2016 9:27 am

If there are not enough rooms, then bus people to Tokyo.
