yes, I was ready to go back to Miami after a few hours. If I return, I wouldn't spend the night there. I would just drive down for the day.

Not sure how short any of those are.

BWI-PHL was something like 90 miles officially (I took it too many times as a MD native). My shortest segments are probably the repeated ORD-MKEs, back when YX was high quality and had great fare sales on short notice - kept the other airlines (AA at that time in my life) in check.

I'll through out the Ren Agoura Hills. It's very nice though sure the nightlife is lacking. Parking is included and pretty sure you could get $130 or less gov't rate. Sheraton Gateway LAX is fine though nothing special.

The Ren is a very nice hotel. Though, as was said, there is that little problem of nothing to do.

If your meeting is really only three hours, stay down in the city. I personally really like the LAX Ren.

I did BWI-TPA-EYW-FLL-IAD in October 2001. I don't know that EYW is worth going out of your way to fly in/out of.

Any recommendations for Belize from the Box?

I have two hotel narrowed down for Ambergris Caye.

Cocotal Inn and Cabanas
Royal Caribbean Resort

I was really considering Journey’s End Resort, but it was just going to be too expensive. The two that I have choose from will run btwn $100 and $125 a nt.

I was also looking at Ruby's and Spindrift. Both are probably a notch lower than those two. Maybe I'll look at them, too. You're going to be there over Memorial Day, right?

sbm, I'm going may 8-11 with a looooooog layover in the dump known a mia.

I wonder if I should look into doing the elite challenge thing with aa. I think they are doing the double eqm promo also

Fair enough. I've been trying to figure out if AM uses feed to increase load factors, i.e. if two airlines compete on a route and one is feeding a major hub while the other is initiating its first route out of a new focus city, would the former realize higher loads because of the connection options? If so, then I could see an alliance adding value where a member gets the benefit of the increased loads on flights on its own metal without the expense of offering the long-haul.

Otherwise, the long haul is simply bottom on the list of next best available route options, and whether an alliance member operates the flight or not is irrelevant (and competitive) to me, as eventually I'll find that I've run out of shorter hauls and have to use long hauls for any further expansion.

Congrats! What cities/airplane are you getting on them?

CPT-DXB on a 77W with the new lie-flat 78" Pitch J Seats
DXB-IAH on a 77L with the same seats

My taxes on the tickets even dropped by $40!

The drive is actually not that bad. IT’s very scenic and picturesque. There are a few bridges on the way that they removed the center span from and people use them as fishing piers now that you can go out onto and get some great pictures. I took one of my favorite sunset shots there with the sun setting behind a palm tree and a sailboat moored in the water.

Noted. Might be worth the drive and the accumulation of more Thrifty days.

A day to photo walk, a night on Duval Street, a tour of the Hemingway mansion, and a round of golf is all I'd go back for. On a quasi-related note, I agree with my father on very few issues or discussion points, but I have to give him credit: he told me that Key West is the world's best place to go if you just need to sit and think. I can completely see how he reached that opinion.

Probably not. The programming (IMO) doesn't seem to be very advanced as far as the logic of city pairs.

AA is giving me double redeemable miles for all flights flown in 2009. With DEQM and Triple miles to Boston, I could earn up to 4 times RDM plus x EQM on el cheapo fare to Boston. Too bad I had already booked enough on UA to make 1K for 09  Maybe I should just do a few runs to get RDM.

Currently, $179 all in LAX-BOS-LAX (nets about 20800 RDM) ~ $0.0086 per mile

I would say dont waste your money. As PLAT on AA I am 0-4 on upgrades that I was having to pay for anyway using their stupid stickers. They do not mark your bag's as priority and they get lost. Their elite access line is a joke (at least in IAH and LGA) because they have 1 dedicated rep to help that line and 6+ to help the others but do not take elite's first since you have your very own dedicated check in rep.

I've been to EYW more than a few times. I did the touristy things my first times there. Now if I'm not visiting a few friends living down there, I really like to go to the local's places and people-watch and talk to some of the old timers. I love the stories they tell.

And the drive is wonderful - top down, tunes on the radio... wouldn't want to drive there and back in the same day though...
