There is a recently constructed pedestrian bridge over a major highway in Lubbock, TX that I had an "experience" on.

A large crowd was leaving a football game and using the bridge, making it packed. As people neared the midpoint of the bridge, I started feeling queasy but realized it wasn't just me, everyone felt the same way. Then I realized it wasn't queasiness but the bridge swaying from the load.

People were freaking out, thinking the thing was going to collapse. It was not just a little sway, this was look forward and the entire horizon moved.

Bridge must have had a lot of influence in its design by an architect. That's caused by Platooning and has been known to be an issue on pedestrian bridges for over a century yet it still happens on brand new bridges. People pick up on the subtle bouncing of the bridge (like I said all bridges bounce) and start to walk in rhythm to the bounce amplifying the bounce. The most recent high profile case of this is on the Millennium Bridge in London that closed a few days after it opened. They spent a fortune fixing the problem that should have been addressed during the orignal design.

Comparing the Stars to a potentially upstart franchise isn't accurate. Dallas has had star players and won a few Cups, and they are also a transplant club like Phoenix.

Let it go... Things like that bring absolutely no value to the FT community.

That stinks. I have only had to do maybe 8 or 10 stories working EMS and I thought I was going to pass out.

Where does Draper fit in?

The fact remains that he did not do his duty as a team captain, and those who follow it know that hockey takes its traditions very seriously. Those traditions are part of why hockey is the best sport for little kids to grow up watching. When the young face of the NHL breaks from those traditions, it says nothing good to those kids and young players. I don't care if the captain is busy celebrating; it is his job to marshal the rest of the team into the handshake line and to be the guy at the very front of it. There's a reason that the captain gets to hoist the Cup first - sure, rank has its privileges, but it also keeps his time free so as to lead the team in what needs to be done after the presentation of the Cup. And like it or not, Crybaby Crosby will be held to the highest standard possible. He should know that and act accordingly.

Draper is the one who whined to the media about it, while Lidstrom's comment on the situation was more diplomatic. And Marian Hossa of all people said it was a non-issue and that Sidney Crosby would never intentionally disrepect hockey tradition.

Problem is, as is often the case, the media reporting on the story doesn't bother to do any fact checking. The story intimates that Crosby blew off the handshake line while a video replay shows he was being grabbed for interviews and accosted from all sides. He did not wait any longer than usual before reporting to the handshake line, extricated himself from everyone who wanted to give him a hug, high five, or whatever, and did indeed get to half the Red Wings team and even the coach. All this in just a few minutes -- we're not talking about a long time here.

The Wings, understandably, wanted to get the heck out of there, but they should have accorded the same amount of time to the Pens before lining up as the Pens gave them last year. Lidstrom is one of the classiest guys in hockey, and I think we can excuse him for not wanting to hang around, but it takes two to blow off the tradition.

I agree with you that hockey takes its traditions very seriously, and Sidney Crosby is very much aware of and a subscriber to those traditions. He rightfully earned some of his nicknames early in his career when at the age of 17 he was chirping at the refs and trying to do too much which resulted in him skating out of control or balance and subsequntly flopping all over the ice whenever he was touched. But anyone who listens to him talk in interviews will know that he never whines, complains, or blames officials/teammates or the opposition, and that the moniker of Crybaby Crosby is currently quite inaccurate.

That said, I concede you the point of simply being partisan, as I am. There are plenty of players around the league (like that douche Ovechkin) that I can't stand, but of course would love if they were on my team.

This is like a paradox to me. Every time I think about it (often) I give myself an ice cream headache.

I have never wondered about that until now. Hmmmm, are they wearing the change belt like Ralph Cramden?

It appears that they have been using the polar route on ATL-ICN for the last few days (not sure whether they usually use the polar route or not), resulting in arrival delays of only 40 minutes or so.

Apparently that's why it's so cold up here right now. I was warmer in Vancouver.
